During last night’s first Murray City Council meeting of the year, it was announced Chief Jeff Liles is retiring.  Liles has served as Murray’s police chief since 2010.

 

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet reports construction work is underway on the US 641-Business Loop in Murray.  Motorists need to be advised there will be occassional lane restrictions in the area of South 4th Street near the Vine Street intersection.  Weather permitting, the work is expected to take about 10 days.

 

Following the death of a Caldwell County High student last March, officials are lowering the speed limit around Caldwell County High School.  17-year-old Matt Brewer died in a traffic accident while making a turn on Kentucky 91 at the intersection of Jeff Watson Road.  The current speed limit is 55 miles per hour but the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is lowering it to 45 miles per hour.

 

WPSD reports the decision to lower the speed limit was based on a petition made by Brewer’s mother.  The younger Brewer was on his way to a senior band concert when the fatal accident occurred.

 

Lyon County Sheriff Brent White took to social media Wednesday to discuss recent incidents that have taken place in the Lyon County School system.  He praised the school system before addressing the recent incidents.

 

White noted that students involved have made choices, resulting in consequences for their action.  He added threats are not taken lightly.  One of the incidents occurred last week when a 16-year-old male threatened to bring a bomb and blow up Lyon County High School.

 

A couple of local entities have received Governor’s Awards in the Arts.  Governor Andy Beshear recently announced the Murray Art Guild received the Community Arts Award and the Business Award was presented to Independence Bank-Graves County for the Horses of Hope fund raising efforts for the Ice House Art Guild.

 

The Kentucky Department of Tourism has released its 2023 Kentucky Visitors Guide.  The theme for this year is “Beauty in the Bluegrass”  There are several mentions of western Kentucky in the guide, including an extensive section detailing the Land Between the Lakes area along with Columbus-Belmont State Park.
