The 3rd District high school basketball championship games scheduled for last night were canceled due to what the Mayfield Independent Schools called “ a potential of safety concerns.:  West Kentucky Star.com reports the Graves County Schools issued a statement indicating the situation had been resolved with the help of law enforcement.  The games will be played this evenning at Mayfield High School beginning at 6 pm.

The Murray Ledger and Times reported Thursday a local man died in a recent house fire.  80-year-old Robert “Bob” McDaniel died at his Maplewood Circle home on February 8th.  Calloway County Coroner Ricky Garland says investigators are awating the results of an autopsy,, but foul play is not suspected.

A Lexington-area lawmaker wants to raise the state’s minimum wage.  Senator Reggie Thomas introduced a bill Thursday that would increase the hourly wage to 15 dollars by July 2028.  He mentioned the state’s minimum wage hasn’t changed since 2009.  If passed, the bill would allow individuals cities to enforce their own minimum wage laws.

Kentucky could soon have tougher punishments for hazing.  The Senate passed a bill in Frankfort yesterday that would increase the penalty for participating in the activity.  It is best known as “Lofton’s Law,” named after 18-year-old Thomas “Lofton” Hazelwood who died of alcohol poisoning while pledging at a University of Kentucky fraternity back in 2021.  The bill would make hazing a felony, which it is already classified as in 14 other U.S. states.
