In girls high school basketball last night, Alyssa Daughrity scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Murray High to a 45-34 road win over Mayfield. Marika Bomar added 12 points for the Lady Tigers who improved to 1-3 heading into Friday night’s game at Muhlenberg County.

BURNS NAMED OVC NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
Murray State’s DJ Burns is the OVC Newcomer of the Week after a vote by communications directors in the Ohio Valley Conference. The transfer from Southern averaged 15.5 points and 10 rebounds while hitting 72% from the field in a pair of Murray State home court victories. The 15 rebounds against Middle Tennessee on Saturday are tied for the most by an OVC player this season.
RACER BASEBALL SCHEDULE RELEASED
The 2022 Murray State baseball schedule was released yesterday. The Racers begin the season on February 18 with a three-game home series with Butler. The Racers will also play non-conference games against Kentucky, Alabama, Northern Illinois, Bellarmine, Illinois State, SIU, Valparaiso, North Alabama, Alabama A&M, Western Illinois, Evansville, and Ole Miss. OVC play begins on March 25 with a three-game series at Morehead State.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP
In college basketball, Illinois knocked off Iowa 87-83. Winless Texas Southern shocked 20th ranked Florida 69-54, and Morehead State downed Presbyterian 71-66. Number-10 Kentucky hosts Southern tonight.
GRIZZLIES WIN
In the NBA, Memphis defeated the Heat 105-90 in South Beach. Dillon Brooks and Desmond Bane each scored 21 points in the win, and Steven Adams had 17 points and 16 rebounds. Memphis improves to 14-and-10 and hosts the Dallas Mavericks tomorrow night.
TITANS MAKE MOVES
Julio Jones will be back on the field soon. The Titans designated Jones to return from injured reserve on Monday. The receiver missed Tennessee’s last three games with a hamstring injury. The Titans also designated wide receiver Racey McMath and safety Dane Cruikshank to come back from the IR.

New England defeated the Bills 14-10 in a Monday Night Football clash in Orchard Park, New York. With high winds and the cold affecting both teams, the Pats opted to play an old-school game. New England ran the ball 46 times for 222 yards and a touchdown. Mac Jones completed 2-of-3 pass attempts to help the 9-and-4 Pats extend their winning streak to seven games.
Oregon head football coach Mario Cristobal is leaving to take the top job with the Miami Hurricanes. The university announced Cristobal’s departure and added a nationwide search is underway for his replacement. Cristobal had a 35 and 13 overall record with the Ducks. Oregon won back-to-back Pac-12 championships, until losing to Utah on Friday. Cristobal played for the Hurricanes from 1989 to 1992 as an offensive lineman.
The Heisman Trophy finalists are officially set. Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud, Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett and Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson were announced as the Heisman Trophy finalists Monday. Since 2000, QB’s have won the award 17 times. Last year’s winner was Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith. The Heisman Trophy will be awarded this Saturday in New York.
The Purdue Boilermakers are the new number-one team in the men’s college basketball Top-25 Coaches Poll. It’s the first time ever the Boilermakers reached the top spot in the roughly three decades that the USA Today has administered the Coaches Poll. Baylor is up two spots to second, while previous number-one Duke dropped to third. UCLA is now fourth and Gonzaga fifth. Villanova and Kansas remain sixth and seventh respectively, while Arizona, Alabama, and Arkansas round out the top-10.
Another Duck is flying away from Eugene. Oregon star defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux is declaring for the 2021 NFL Draft and will miss the Alamo Bowl. He’s widely regarded as a top five pick. Thibodeaux finished the season with seven sacks, 12 tackles for loss and 49 total tackles. It was also reported that the defensive end plans to sign with Wasserman Media Group for his on-field representation.
Less than two months after leading her team to a WNBA Finals appearance, Sandy Brondello is out as Mercury head coach. The team announced that it was not renewing her contract on Monday. General manager Jim Pitman says that Phoenix is “confident a new voice is necessary” to lead the team. Brondello won a WNBA title in her first season at the helm for Phoenix back in 2014, but the Mercury were defeated by the Chicago Sky in the Finals this year three games to one. She finishes her Mercury career with a 150-and-108 record.
