Most Of Commonwealth Under Flash Flood Watches

Flash flood watches are in effect across the Commonwealth.  The National Weather Service says the flash flood watches will remain in effect through tonight.  Forecasters say rainfall through tomorrow morning could range between two-to-four inches.  The highest amounts are expected along the east of a line from Bowling Green to Lexington.

Fort Campbell Official Says Soldiers Make High-Quality Employees

Fort Campbell officials say soldiers can be the solution to finding high-quality employees.  Fort Campbell’s garrison commander spoke during yesterday’s South Western Kentucky Economic Development Council meeting.  Colonel Andrew Jordan told business leaders hundreds of Fort Campbell soldiers transition from active duty to civilian status every month.  Colonel Jordan said many of them are choosing to remain in the area and are looking for jobs.

Kentucky Experiences Highest-Even Monday For New COVID-19 Cases

Kentucky is experiencing its highest-ever number of new COVID-19 cases on a Monday.  Governor Andy Beshear announced over 26-hundred new cases of the virus yesterday, along with 25 additional deaths.  Nearly 22-hundred people in the commonwealth are hospitalized for COVID-19-related illnesses, with just over 360 on ventilators.  Over 572-thousand Kentuckians have tested positive for the virus and more than 77-hundred have died since the pandemic began.

Calloway Covid Update

As of 8/30/21, the Calloway County Health Department has received notification of 69 new cases of COVID19 The case count is now at 4,413 with 4,088 recovered, 261 isolated at home, 9 hospitalized, and 55 deaths.  The majority of reported cases were unvaccinated.  Here is a breakdown of the total cases by age category:  18 cases under age 18, 24 cases age 18 to 39, 16 case age 40-60, and 11 cases over 60.

State Auditor Testifies Before Legislative Research Committee Regarding Unemployment Insurance

The commonwealth’s Legislative Research Committee is hearing from state Auditor Mike Harmon.  Harmon testified before the committee yesterday regarding service missteps made by the Office of Unemployment Insurance after the agency was flooded with new claims last March and in the following months.  Harmon says his audit showed that the office didn’t report data breaches and illegally used a federally barred auto pay system.  The 2023 candidate for governor also said that ten office employees accessed their own claims, enabling them to make changes.

OPS To Receive KY DOE Literacy Grant

(Owensboro, KY)  —  Owensboro Public Schools is set to receive just under a million dollars over the next three years through a literacy grant.  The grant comes from the Kentucky Department of Education’s KyCL round two funding.  Officials say the district is one of 19 in the commonwealth to receive funding through the competitive process.  Funds will go toward supporting literacy efforts across the district at all ages through literacy and community partnerships.

Commonwealth Holding Special Elections To Fill KY General Assembly Vacancies

(Frankfort, KY)  —  The commonwealth will be holding special elections to fill vacancies in the Kentucky General Assembly.  Secretary of State Michael Adams announced yesterday that the elections would be held November 2nd to fill vacancies left by Representatives John “Bam” Carney and  Robert Goforth, as well as Senator Tom Buford.  Carney represented the 51st House District, Goforth the 89th House District, and Buford the 22nd Senate District.  Carney and Buford died while in office, and Goforth resigned earlier this month while facing domestic violence charges.

Heavy Rains From Hurricane Ida Leads To Flash Flooding Across Commonwealth

(Lexington, KY)  —  Kentucky Emergency Management officials are bracing for the impact of flash flooding in many areas of the commonwealth caused by the remains of Hurricane Ida.  Heavy rains washed out roads in a large portion of the commonwealth.  Officials are especially concerned about the rain’s affect on areas of the commonwealth already hard hit by previous flooding.  Rain is expected to continue today in much of the commonwealth.

Flash Flooding Curbs Travel Through Owensboro

(Owensboro, KY)  —  Flash flooding is impacting travel through Owensboro.  Heavy rains fell across Daviess County yesterday, causing water to fill the streets in some parts of the county.  The area is under a flash flood warning.  Drivers are urged to use caution and to not drive through areas with water over the road.

 

Historic WWII Ship To Pass By Owensboro

(Owensboro, KY)  —  A bit of history will pass by Owensboro today.  The USS LST 235 is expected to pass by Owensboro’s waterfront this afternoon around 4 o’clock.  It’s one of the last remaining USS LST ships used during the invasion of Normandy.  The ship will salute the city by firing its anti-aircraft cannon, while the local VFW post Honor Guard will honor the ship with a 21-gun salute.

GRDHD To Update Coronavirus Numbers

(Owensboro, KY)  —  The Green River District Health Department is expected to update its coronavirus numbers today.  On Friday, the GRDHD reported 749 additional confirmed cases with 278 in Daviess County, 147 in Henderson County, 119 in Ohio County, 80 in Union County, 57 in Webster County, 42 in McLean County, and 26 in Hancock County.  There have been over 28-thousand-500 cases in the seven-county District since the outbreak began.  There have been nearly 450 COVID-19-related deaths in the district since the outbreak began.

FBI: Items Of Interest In Crystal Rogers Case Sent To Lab

(Bardstown, KY)  —  The FBI is suspending its search of a home in Bardstown’s Woodlawn Springs subdivision.  The FBI spent about a week excavating an area outside the home owned by Brooks Houck, the only person ever suspected in the 2015 disappearance of Crystal Rogers.  Federal authorities announced yesterday “multiple items of interest” have been sent to the FBI Laboratory in Quantico, Virginia.  The FBI says the search was suspended over weather concerns.

UofL Announces Vaccine Incentive Program

(Louisville, KY)  —  The UofL is offering a new COVID-19 vaccination incentive contest.  The new contest allows fully vaccinated students the chance to register to win prizes offered by the school.  Prizes include home football game tickets, daily free Starbucks Coffee for a year, and the equivalent of one semester of free undergraduate in-state tuition.  The drawings for the two rounds of the contest will be held on September 15th and October 15th.

Cherokee Park Roads To Reopen On Labor Day

(Louisville, KY)  —  All Cherokee Park roads are opening on Labor Day.  As of next Monday, September 6th cars will be allowed to drive through the Cherokee Park Scenic Loop for the first time since April of 2020.  The roads have been closed to limit gatherings over coronavirus concerns.  Some roads were reopened earlier this summer.

TDH Updates State Coronavirus Cases

(Nashville, TN)  —  There are over 65-hundred new coronavirus cases in Tennessee.  The Tennessee Department of Health reported the new cases yesterday, bringing the total since the outbreak began to over one-million-42-thousand.  Nearly 60 additional COVID-19-related deaths were also reported, with the total number standing at nearly 13-thousand-430.  There are over 31-hundred COVID-19 hospitalizations in Tennessee.

U.S. Department Of Education Investigating Tennessee

(Washington, DC)  —  Tennessee is the target of a civil rights investigation.  The U.S. Department of Education announced yesterday Tennessee is one of five states being looked at for potential discriminatory policies for banning mask mandates in schools.  The probe will look at whether statewide bans on universal indoor masking discriminate against students with disabilities who may be at heightened risk for severe illness from COVID-19.  Iowa, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Utah are also being investigated.

Knoxville Honors Hometown Hero

(Knoxville, TN)  —  A U.S. Army soldier from East Tennessee killed in Afghanistan is being honored in his hometown.  The walkway over Knoxville’s Henley Street is being lit up in red, white, and blue to honor Staff Sergeant Ryan Knauss [[ Kuh-nows ]].  Knauss was a 2016 graduate of Gibbs High School.  The 23-year-old was one of 13 members of the U.S. military killed in a terrorist attack in the Asian nation’s capital of Kabul last week.

‘Grandmother Of Juneteenth’ Honored In Tennessee

(Memphis, TN)  —  A woman known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth” is being honored in Tennessee.  Opal Lee was recognized with a special resolution at the Shelby County Board of Commissioners meeting yesterday.  The honor is for her efforts to have Juneteenth declared a federal holiday, with her change.org petition receiving more than one-and-a-half-million signatures.  During the ceremony, Lee was given the first pen used by President Biden to sign the document into law.

UT Names Starting QB

(Knoxville, TN)  —  A former Michigan man will be the starting quarterback for UT when the Volunteers open their season on Thursday night.  First year head coach Josh Heupel [[ Hi-pul ]] named former Wolverines QB Joe Milton his starter yesterday.  Milton completed 80 of 141 passes for just over one-thousand yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions in five games last season for Michigan.  The opener against Bowling Green at Neyland Stadium is set for 8 o’clock.

Ida Expected To Drop Rain On Mid-State Through Tomorrow Morning

(Nashville, TN)  —  Middle Tennessee is under a flash flood watch.  The remnants of Hurricane Ida could drop several inches of rain on the Mid-State by tomorrow morning.  The area south of I-40 could get hit the hardest.  Forecasters say drivers shouldn’t pass through flooded areas.

Bonnaroo Reducing Camping Capacity

(Manchester, TN)  —  Bonnaroo officials say they’re reducing camping capacity for the annual music and arts festival.  Festival organizers said yesterday the capacity is being reduced in anticipation that some areas of the campground will be flooded.  Ticket holders can request a full refund until 8 o’clock tonight.  The festival starts on Thursday and runs through Sunday.

Some MNPS Staff Offered Additional Paid COVID-19 Sick Time

(Nashville, TN)  —  Some Nashville teachers are being offered additional paid sick days due to COVID-19.  Metro Nashville Public Schools says employees unable to work because of the coronavirus will be paid for the additional sick time through federal stimulus funds.  However, the additional paid sick days are only being offered to staff members who have been vaccinated.  MNPS Director of Schools Adrienne Battle said last week it’s not the district’s responsibility to compensate those who decide not to get the vaccine.

Super Bowl Winner, Nashville HS Coach Responds To Viral Video

(Nashville, TN)  —  A Nashville high school football coach says he’s responsible for not “deescalating” an emotional sideline situation caught on a now viral video.  Super Bowl-winning quarterback Trent Dilfer is the head coach at Lipscomb Academy.  Dilfer was seen pushing one of his players towards the bench on Friday night and telling him to “sit down.”  He released a statement yesterday saying the player is one of the school’s finest student athletes and he unfairly singled him out while attempting to get the team to play with more discipline.

Vanderbilt To Open Clark Lea Era Against East Tennessee State

(Vanderbilt, TN)  —  It’s game week for the Vanderbilt football team.  New head coach Clark Lea will lead the Commodores against East Tennessee State at Vanderbilt Stadium on Saturday night.  Vanderbilt hasn’t won a football game since beating East Tennessee State in November of 2019.  The game is set for 7 o’clock.
