CARDINALS WALK OFF TIGERS
Lars Nootbaar’s walk-off single in the bottom of the tenth lifted the Cardinals to a 3-2 extra inning win against the Tigers at Busch Stadium. Paul Goldschmidt smacked a pair of homers for St. Louis, which spit the two game set. T.J. McFarland earned the win. Also yesterday, the team placed Jack Flaherty on the 10-day injured list. The Cardinals are in Pittsburgh tonight, with airtime set for 5:15 on WNBS AM and FM.

RACERS AND VOLS OPEN THE SEASON A WEEK FROM TONIGHT
Murray State will open the football season a week from tonight with a 7 pm game against Mississippi Valley State at Stewart Stadium. The game airs on Froggy 103.7. Tennessee football will also open their season one week from tonight at Neyland Stadium against Bowling Green in the debut for new UT head coach Josh Heupel.

UK FOOTBALL FANS WILL NOT REQUIRE VACCINE PROOF
UK fans won’t be required to provide proof of a COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test to get into Kroger Field this football season. Everyone will be required to wear masks while visiting any indoor areas within the stadium, regardless of vaccination status. Fully vaccinated fans will not be required to wear masks in concourse areas or in the upper or lower seating bowls of the stadium. Masks also won’t be necessary in outside club seating and in suites with the windows open.

BRIDGEWATER TO START FOR DENVER
Former Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is getting another chance to start in the NFL and will be the starter when Denver opens the season on September 12th against the New York Giants. Bridgewater beat out Drew Lock for the starting job. Bridgewater was acquired for a 6th round draft pick ahead of the NFL draft.

LANDRY LANDS ON COVID LIST
Another Titans player has landed on the COVID-19 List. Outside linebacker Harold Landry is the fourth Tennessee player to be put on the COVID List this week. Mike Vrabel tested positive for the virus on Sunday and has been away from the team since then.

MEMPHIS LANDS BATES
Emoni Bates, a 6-foot-9 forward from Michigan, has committed to play for the Memphis Tigers. Bates is ranked the third-best player in the 2021 class by ESPN. Bates chose Memphis over Michigan State, Oregon and the NBA G-League.

CASE AGAINST UK FOOTBALL PLAYERS CONTINUES
The burglary case against six University of Kentucky football players is headed to a grand jury. The six Wildcats are charged with forcing their way into a fraternity party earlier this year. When asked to leave, they left and returned with more players and allegedly threatened and assaulted some partygoers. R.J. Adams, Robert McClain, Vito Tisdale, Andreu Phillips, Ernest Sanders and Joel Williams pleaded not guilty during their arrangement last week and were in court again yesterday where they waived their right to a preliminary hearing.

MINOR LEAGUE RECAP
In area minor league games, the Memphis Redbirds lost to the Columbus Clippers 3-2 in Memphis, Louisville defeated the Indianapolis Indians 6-2 in Indiana, and Nashville lost 5-4 at home to Gwinnett.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
AJ Pollock came through in the 16th inning as the Dodgers defeated the Padres 5-3 in extras in San Diego. The two teams were locked at 1-1 through 14 innings, before each scored two runs in the 15th. Billy McKinney and Trea Turner each had an extra inning RBI for Los Angeles, which has won two straight. Will Smith added a solo homer in the eighth. Corey Knebel picked up his third win in relief, with Shane Greene locking down his first save.

The Orioles’ 19-game losing streak is finally in the past after they took down the Angels 10-6 in Baltimore. The Angels bullpen walked in a run twice and Austin Hays drove in two with a double during a five-run eighth inning to cap an O’s comeback. Baltimore hit three home runs against Shohei Ohtani, including Cedric Mullins’ 22nd of the season, which led off the game.

Six-time U.S. Open champion Serena Williams is pulling out of this year’s tournament due to injury. The 23-time Grand Slam winner announced on Instagram that she won’t be able to play because of the torn hamstring that forced her to retire from her first-round Wimbledon match. Serena wrote that, after careful consideration with her medical team, she decided to let her body heal completely rather than try to play in New York.

After letting nearly five years go by since his last PGA Tour victory, Tony Finau is looking to make it two in a row as the field reduces dramatically in the second tournament of the FedEx Cup playoffs. The Salt Lake City native is picking the best time of the year to get hot, as the playoffs move to Owings Mills, Maryland, for the BMW Championship, which starts today.
