RACER SOCCER FALLS TO SAMFORD IN EXHIBITION
The Murray State soccer team wrapped up exhibition play with a 2-1 loss to Samford yesterday afternoon at Cutchin Field. Rebecca Kubin’s goal in the 37th minute tied the game at 1-1. Kubin’s goal was assisted by Chloe Barnthouse. Less than two minutes later, the Bulldogs scored what would turn out to be the winning goal. The Racers begin the 21st season in program history when they host Missouri State at Cutchin Field next Thursday.

LAKER AND TIGER FOOTBALL TEAMS TRAVEL FOR SCRIMMAGES
The high school football season begins a week from tonight, but both local teams will be in action this evening. Calloway County’s scrimmage with Crittenden County was canceled with the Rockets in covid quarantine. Instead, the Lakers travel to Trigg County for a three-way scrimmage with the Wildcats and Russellville. Murray High will scrimmage against Stewart County in a football jamboree at Bethel University.

CARDINALS COMPLETE SWEEP OF PITTSBURGH
The Cardinals completed the three-game sweep of the Pirates with a 7-6 win at PNC Park. Paul DeJong and Lars Nootbaar each hit two-run homers in the fourth inning for St. Louis. T.J. McFarland got the win in relief. Cards starter Wade LeBlanc did exit the game after tossing just 30 pitches due to left elbow pain. The Cards are at the Royals tonight, with airtime at 6:15 on WNBS AM and FM.

TITANS PLAY FALCONS TONIGHT; SIGN 2, RELEASE 2
Titans fans will get their first look at the team tonight when Tennessee faces the Falcons in Atlanta beginning at 6 central time. The team’s only preseason game at Nissan Stadium will be played on August 28th. Tedric Thompson and Reggie Floyd are now Tennessee Titans. Tennessee agreed to terms with the two safeties yesterday. Thompson has played with the Seahawks, Chiefs, Browns and Broncos in his career, while Floyd joined the Cardinals after being undrafted in 2020 but was later released. The Titans waived receiver Kalija Lipscomb and offensive lineman Adam Coon to open the roster spots.

TILLIE SIGNS WITH MEMPHIS
Killian Tillie is staying with the Grizzlies. Memphis signed the 6-foot-10 forward to a two-way contract. Tillie has averaged 14.5 points per game in two Las Vegas summer league games so far. Tillie played 18 games for the Grizzlies last season.

MINOR LEAGUE ROUNDUP
In area minor league games, the Memphis Redbirds defeated the Tides 7-6 in 11 innings in Norfolk, and the Louisville Bats beat the Nashville Sounds 13-3 in Louisville. Those series continue tonight.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
The Field of Dreams Game was anything but corny as Tim Anderson went the distance by hitting a two-run, walk-off homer to lift the White Sox to a 9-8 win over the Yankees in Dyersville, Iowa. Jose Abreu, Eloy Jimenez, and Seby Zavala all stalked the corn field by putting balls over the fence for home runs in Chicago’s win, their fifth in seven games. It looked like the New York sluggers were the children of the corn as Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton went deep in the top-half of the ninth to give the Yanks a short-lived lead. The Yankees have split their last six games.

The Patriots and Steelers are picking up preseason wins. First-round pick Mac Jones was 13-of-19 for 87 yards in his Patriots’ debut as New England defeated Washington 22-13. Rhamondre Stevenson rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns. In Philadelphia, the Steelers outscored the Eagles by 17 in the second half to roll to a 24-16 win. Dwayne Haskins was 16-for-22 for 161 yards and a touchdown in the win. On Friday, the Titans and the Falcons will battle in Atlanta, the Bills will look to rev their engines when they face the Lions in the Motor City, and the Cowboys look to conquer the desert when they visit the Cardinals.

The Clippers are officially locking down the Klaw to a long term deal. Los Angeles inked star forward Kawhi Leonard to a four-year, 176-point-three million-dollar contract, just under a week after he told the team he would be returning. The two-time NBA Finals MVP guided the Clippers to the playoffs for a second straight year, but went down with a knee injury. That injury was later diagnosed as a partially torn ACL, meaning Leonard is expected to miss a significant portion of this season.

The first-ever WNBA Commissioner’s Cup is going to the Seattle Storm. Seattle beat the Connecticut Sun 79-57 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix. With the Commissioner’s Cup win, Storm players win 30-thousand dollars each. Breanna Stewart led all scorers with 17 points for Seattle and Jewell Loyd had 16 points. DeWanna Bonner finished with 11 points for Connecticut and Jonquel Jones had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Russell Henley is firing his way to the top of the leaderboard after the first round at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina. The 32-year-old Henley had six birdies and an eagle on his way to an eight-under 62 at Sedgefield Country Club on Thursday. He holds a two-shot lead on a group of golfers led by Michael Thompson and Chris Kirk. Defending champion Jim Herman is two-over.

It’s time for the NASCAR Cup Series to kiss the bricks. The Big Machine Vodka 400 at The Brickyard Powered By Florida Georgia Line will take place from Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday. Kyle Larson rolls into Indianapolis with plenty of momentum on his side. Larson won his fifth race of the season this past week after winning the road course at Watkins Glen. His teammate Chase Elliott finished second.
