SIU is ranked 7th, former OVC member Jacksonville State is 10th, and Austin Peay is ranked 20th. Murray State came in just outside the top-25 at number 26. The FCS seeks a return to normalcy this fall after the pandemic delayed much of the 2020 season to this past spring, with some schools not playing at all.

KIM TO IL; CARDS IN PITTSBURGH
Cardinals pitcher Kwang Hyun Kim is on the shelf. The left-handed starter was placed on the injured list with left elbow inflammation. It is his third I-L stint of the season. The club has activated right-hander Daniel Ponce de Leon off the IL in his place. The Cardinals are in Pittsburgh tonight for the start of a three-game set against the Pirates. J.A. Happ takes the bump for St. Louis against Pittsburgh’s Steven Brault. Airtime is set for 5:10 on WNBS AM and FM.

SMITH NOT COMING TO MEMPHIS
It looks like Stephen A. Smith won’t be voicing his takes in Memphis this September. ESPN announced that First Take won’t be doing any remote shows this fall due to COVID-19 concerns, which means the show will not be in Memphis for the Southern Heritage Classic. The event will still go on as planned with Tennessee State taking on Jackson State on September 11th in the Liberty Bowl.

NEW UNIFORMS FOR VANDY
The Vanderbilt football team is showing off new uniforms they will wear on the field this upcoming season. The team’s new helmets are gold with black and white stripes and a large letter V on the side. Head coach Clark Lea said he will work to have the team build pride in the new uniforms.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
Hesitancy about the COVID-19 vaccine continues to impact the sports world. A few days after getting activated from the COVID list, Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson did not commit to getting the COVID-19 vaccine. Jackson said getting the vaccine was a “personal decision.” Jackson has caught COVID-19 twice in the past eight months and missed a game last season because he was sick with the virus.

The Colorado Rockies are saying a racial slur was not shouted at a Black player Sunday night. The Rockies say an investigation determined the fan was trying to get the attention of their mascot “Dinger” while Miami Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson was at the plate. The team apparently used footage from AT&T Sportsnet to identify the fan, then speak with him. The Rockies also noted no one on the field heard any racial slur. 9News reports the fan was hoping to get a family picture with the mascot.

The Dallas Mavericks are locking up star guard Luka Doncic with the first-ever supermax rookie contract extension. ESPN reports it’s a five-year deal worth 207-million dollars, making Doncic the first player in NBA history to earn the supermax rookie extension. He became eligible after being named to the All-NBA First Team twice in his first three seasons in the league. Doncic is expected to officially sign the deal and hold a press conference today.

The Bulls are one of several teams that the NBA is investigating for possible tampering. ESPN is reporting the sign-and-trade deal with the Pelicans involving Lonzo Ball could have violated league rules. The two teams allegedly had talks prior to the free agency deadline of last Monday. The NBA is also investigating the deal between the Heat and the Raptors involving Kyle Lowry. Violators can get a ten million dollar fine, forfeiture of draft picks, or cancellation of the trade.

The Big Apple’s young stars are showing out in the Las Vegas Summer league. Immanuel Quickley cashed in with 32 points as the Knicks defeated the Pacers 94-86. Obi Toppin proved there was no stoppin’ him with 22 points. Also in summer league action, the defending NBA Champion Bucks saw their young players deliver a 81-78 win over the Clippers. Elsewhere in Sin City, the Pelicans crushed the Bulls 94-77, the 76ers blasted the Mavericks 95-73, and the Kings defeated the Hornets 80-70. Tonight, it’s a battle of the top two overall picks as Cade Cunningham and the Pistons battle Jalen Green and the Rockets.
