RACER FOOTBALL HOSTS JSU IN CHAMPIONSHIP SHOWDOWN
Sunday’s regular season football finale at Stewart Stadium will serve as a de facto OVC championship game as 10th-ranked Jacksonville State and 17th-ranked Murray State are tied at the top of the conference standings with 5-1 league records. The Racers have an opportunity to end the current second longest OVC championship drought in the league. Murray State’s last OVC title came in 2002, with the 17-year title-less streak longer than that of any OVC team except Tennessee State, which last won an OVC championship in 1999. Jacksonville State leads the OVC in both total offense as well as scoring defense. In addition to leading the league in the four major categories, they also boast the nation’s ninth best rush defense, allowing just 86 yards per game against the run. Kickoff time is set for 2 pm Sunday on ESPN Plus, with airtime on FROGGY set for 1:30.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
Justin Rose overcame two early bogeys to fire a seven-under 65 and grab the lead after the first round of The Masters. He had an eagle and seven birdies over an 11-hole stretch and leads Brian Harman and Hideki Matsuyama by four shots. Four others are tied at two-under par.

Red Sox starter Eduardo Rodriguez is enjoying his first victory since September 2019. The left-hander struck out seven over five innings of three-run ball in a 7-3 win over the Orioles in Baltimore. The 28-year-old returned after missing all of last season with heart inflammation.

The Lakers will wait until their final home game before celebrating last season’s title. The team announced plans to display its championship banner Wednesday, May 12th against the Houston Rockets. The Lakers say waiting will allow for the most possible fans.

Police in South Carolina say former NFL defensive back Phillip Adams is the gunman in a mass shooting that left five people dead. Adams was later found in a nearby home with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The 32-year-old played for six teams, most recently Atlanta in 2015.

There’s a hearing today in the civil lawsuits against Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. It will determine whether he will learn the names of the massage therapists suing him for sexual misconduct. Watson’s attorney says it’s important so he can properly defend himself.
