RACERS ROLL BEHIND BARNTHOUSE HAT TRICK
Chloe Barnthouse had a hat trick as Murray State soccer wrapped up the regular season with a 4-0 win over Eastern Illinois yesterday at Cutchin Field. Lilly Strader scored the other goal as Jenna Villacres and Cera Prather combined for the clean sheet as the Racers improved to 9-1 heading into next week’s OVC Tournament at Cutchin Field. The top-seeded Racers will face #4 seed SEMO at 11 am on April 15, with #2 seed SIUE and #3 seed UT Martin squaring off at 2 pm. The winners will meet on April 17 at 2 pm in the tournament title game.

RACER BASEBALL RALLIES PAST BELLARMINE
Bryson Bloomer and Alex Crump each had three hits as the Murray State baseball team overcame a 7-run defecit en route to a 12-8 win over Bellarmine at Reagan Field yesterday afternoon. Tanner Booth homered and drove in three runs as Jordyn Naranjo improved to 2-0 with the win. The 15-12 Racers return to action on Friday at 5 pm when they host Southeast Missouri.

GOVERNORS SWEEP RACER SOFTBALL
Racer softball dropped a twinbill to Austin Peay yesterday in Clarksville. In the opener, Austin Peay plated a run in the bottom of the 10th for a 4-3 win. Sierra Gilmore and Jensen Striegel each had two hits to pace the MSU offense. In the nightcap, the Governors plated 6 runs in the bottom of the 4th to erase a 6-4 deficit in a 12-6 win. Sierra Gilmore was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s and Logan Braundmeier had 3 hits as the Racers dropped to 14-21 overall and 11-8 in the OVC. The Racers return to action on Friday at 4 when they host Tennessee Tech.

BELMONT CLAIMS MURRAY STATE INVITE
Belmont fired a final round 282 to finish at 844 to win the Murray State Invitational by 3 strokes over UT Martin at Greystone Golf Club in Dixon, Tennessee. Murray State’s Austin Knight posted the low score of the final round for the Racers with 3-under-par 69 as he and fellow senior Connor Coombs shared low round honors. The Racers shot a final round 294 and finished sixth with an 879. The medalist winner was Belmont’s Evan Davis who finished at 201 for a seven shot win. Knight finished in a tie for 18th with a 217.

2020 HALL OF FAME CEREMONY SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 19
After the event was postponed due to COVID-19, the 2020 class to the Murray State Athletics Hall of Fame will be honored with an in-person gathering at 6 pm on June 19 at Roy Stewart Stadium. The 2020 class includes John Beaton-baseball, Jenna Bradley-softball, Tara Isbell-soccer, coach Billy Kennedy-men’s basketball, Jackie Mounts-women’s basketball, Nick and Patrick Newcomb-men’s golf, Cameron Payne-men’s basketball, Walter Powell-football, and Joi Scott-women’s basketball. Tickets are $45 per person and can be purchased by calling the CFSB Center ticket office at 270-809-3000 or online. The CFSB Center will be used as a backup site if weather issues arise.

KIURU NAMED ALL-AMERICAN
Murray State rifle’s Matias Kiuru was recently named as a three-time All-American for his performance during the 2020-21 season by the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association. The Finnish native was named to the first team for air rifle and smallbore and to the second team for aggregate. Kiuru led the Racers on the season with a 584 smallbore, a 594 air rifle and a 1178 aggregate.

CARDS DOUBLE UP FISH
The Cardinals scored three runs in the sixth in a 4-2 come from behind victory over the Marlins in Miami. Dylan Carlson added a solo home run in the ninth for St. Louis, which secured its first series victory of the season. Ryan Helsley earned the win in relief. The three-game set wraps up tonight, with time shifted coverage set for 9 pm on WNBS due to state tournament coverage.

GIRLS SWEET 16 BEGINS TODAY ON WNBS
The KHSAA Mingua Beef Jerky Girls Sweet 16 begins today with four first round games. In the 10 am game, Knott County Central faceS Sacred Heart, followed by Bowling Green and Bishop Brossert at 1. The 4 pm game features Franklin County vs South Laurel, followed by Anderson County and Southwestern at 7. Coverage begins this morning at 9:45 with coverage of every game beginning 15 minutes before tipoff on WNBS AM and FM.

MEMPHIS DOUSES HEAT
Dillon Brooks poured in 28 points as the Grizzles beat the Heat 124-112 to end Miami’s four-game winning streak. Jonas Valanciunas had 20 points and 10 rebounds for Memphis, which won its third in-a-row. Ja Morant had 10 points, 4 assists and 4 rebounds, but committed 7 turnovers. The Grizz improve to 25-and-23 and play tonight in Atlanta and Friday at the New York Knicks.

AREA HOCKEY ROUNDUP
The Nashville Predators rallied to beat the Red Wings 3-2 in a shootout in Detroit. The Preds are 21-18-1 and face the Red Wings again tomorrow night in Detroit. The Blues host the Golden Knights tonight. St. Louis is looking to end a seven-game losing streak.

ALL STAR GAME RETURNING TO OWENSBORO
The Kentucky-Indiana All-Star Game series is returning to Owensboro. This year’s game in Kentucky will be played on Friday, June 11th at the Owensboro Sportscenter. The game in Indiana will be played the following day at Southport Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The Kentucky Indiana All-Star Game is the oldest continuing high school all-star game in the country.

GOVS ASSISTANT TAKES JOB WITH VOLS
Rod Clark is leaving Austin Peay to be an assistant for Tennessee head basketball coach Rick Barnes. Two Volunteers assistants have left to become head coaches. Desmond Oliver is at ETSU and Kim English is at George Mason. The 28-year-old Clark is a Kansas City, Missouri native and entering just his third season as a collegiate assistant.

CISSE DECLARES FOR NBA DRAFT
Moussa Cisse of Memphis is declaring for the NBA Draft. The 6-foot-10 center was a five-star recruit and named the American Athletic Conference’s Freshman of the Year. He is not hiring an agent, leaving the door open to return to college. Four Tigers put their names in the transfer portal last week after Memphis won the NIT title.

VANDY FIRES WOMEN’S COACH
Vanderbilt University is getting rid of women’s head basketball coach Stephanie White. The school said Tuesday she will not return and a nationwide search for a new coach is on. White was with the team for five seasons and produced a losing record in overall games and within the SEC. The team was 46-and-83 while she was coach and won 13-SEC conference games. School leaders say they commend White’s community service work while at Vanderbilt.

VOLS FOOTBALL PLAYER CHARGED
A UT football player is being cited for animal cruelty. The citation issued to Aaron Beasley yesterday by Animal Control is a class A misdemeanor. The cat’s owner says while recently moving, she came home to where Beasley’s girlfriend lives to find the kitten hiding under a dresser and unable to walk. The junior linebacker was suspended from team activities on Monday.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
It was worth the wait for the Washington Nationals. After four COVID-19 related postponements to start the season, the Nats finally played their first game, rallying to beat the Braves 6-5 in D.C. Juan Soto’s single to center plated the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

Major League Baseball is officially moving its All-Star Game to Colorado. The league announced it is relocating the Midsummer Classic from Atlanta to Denver in response to Georgia’s voter reform law. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp says MLB is bending to the cancel culture.

Longtime Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor will be wearing pinstripes. ESPN reports the Yankees are finalizing a trade for the 27-year-old, who was left off of Texas’ Opening Day roster. The Rangers get a pair of minor league outfielders in return.

The Nets will be without guard James Harden for at least 10 days. He aggravated a hamstring injury Monday against the Knicks. Harden returned after missing two games, but lasted only four minutes. Meanwhile, Kevin Durant is expected back tonight after missing 23 games.

Officials plan to release the report on the car crash that left Tiger Woods seriously hurt. NBC News reports the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will release the accident report today. It’s not expected to have much new information from the February rollover crash.
