RACER SOCCER STAYS UNBEATEN WITH OT WIN
Lilly Strader provided the game winning goal in overtime as Murray State soccer edged UT Martin 2-1 last night in Martin. Lauren Payne scored a penalty kick goal in the 74th minute to tie the game 1-1. The 3-0 Racers host Belmont at 1 pm Friday at Cutchin Field.

RACER BASEBALL FALLS TO CARDINALS
Tenth-ranked Louisville pushed across five runs in the second inning and went on to a 10-3 home win over Murray State in baseball yesterday in Louisville. The 5-7 Racers scored a run in each of the first three innings, but were blanked after that. Brock Anderson had two of MSU’s five hits. Cade Vernon took the loss after yielding 3 runs over 1 1/3 innings. Cooper Bowman homered and drove in four runs to lead the Cardinals. The Racers travel to Eastern Illinois to open conference play with a three game series beginning Friday.

RACER MEN FINISH FOURTH AT BENBOW INVITE
The Murray State men’s golf team shot a final round 308 and finished in fourth place with a 620 at the 36-hole Don Benbow Invitational in Jacksonville, Florida. Drexel claimed a 24-shot win with a 585. Avery Edwards was the Racers’ best finisher with a spot in seventh place at 152, while Connor Coombs placed 13th at 154. MSU’s first round leader, Quinn Eaton, placed 16th with a 158. The next challenge for the Racers is at the Bobby Nichols Collegiate beginning Sunday at Sevierville Golf Club.

RACER WOMEN FINISH 13TH AT UNF INVITE
Murray State’s Raeshya Surendran fired a final round 78 to finish at 228 and finished in 27th place at the UNF Collegiate in Jacksonville, Florida. The Racers’ best score of the 54-hole event was the middle round with a 304, but it was bookended by a pair of 316’s for a total score of 936 and a spot in 13th place in the field of 17 teams. MSU’s next event in the spring season is at the Bama Beach Bash beginning March 19 in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

RACER FOOTBALL PLAYERS RECEIVE WEEKLY OVC HONORS
Murray State’s Marcis Floyd is the OVC Defensive Player of the Week and Damonta Witherspoon is the Newcomer of the Week for their parts Sunday’s upset of 16th-ranked Southeast Missouri. Floyd had a 22-yard interception return for a touchdown and ended the day with another interception as time expired to seal the upset. He also had six tackles, including six solo stops. Witherspoon rushed for 108 yards on 22 carries. The Racers return to action Sunday in a 1:30 game at Tennessee Tech.

The SEC Basketball Tournament tips off tonight in Nashville with Vanderbilt facing Texas A&M. The winner will face Florida tomorrow. Also tomorrow, Kentucky takes on Mississippi State . Tennessee is seeded fourth and has a bye into Friday’s quarterfinals.

PREDS FALL IN OT
Matt Benning and Ryan Johansen scored Nashville goals in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Hurricanes in Raleigh. Nashville played without captain Roman Josi, who is listed as week-to-week with an upper-body injury. The two teams rematch tomorrow.

GRIZZLIES MAKE MOVES
The Grizzlies have recalled Jontay Porter from the NBA G-League as they open the second half of the season tonight. Memphis will host the Washington Wizards in the first game since the All-Star break. The Grizzlies sent two-way player Sean McDermott to the Memphis Hustle in the G-League.

CARDINALS FALL TO METS
The Cardinals led by three before falling 5-3 to the Mets at Clover Park. Justin Williams homered for St. Louis, while starter Carlos Martínez tossed three scoreless innings in defeat. Angel Rondón got the loss and a blown save. The Cards visit the Nationals today.

MIKOLAS TO BE EXAMINED TODAY
Cardinals pitcher Miles Mikolas won’t be ready for the start of the season. The right-hander has been dealing with a sore right shoulder throughout camp. Mikolas is coming off July surgery to repair the flexor tendon in his right forearm, a procedure that kept him out of the shortened 2020 season. He will undergo a series of exams today to determine why the soreness hasn’t gone away.

TITANS CUT BUTLER
The Titans are parting ways with veteran defensive back Malcolm Butler. Butler’s release will clear 10.2-million dollars in cap space. He joined Tennessee in 2018. Prior to that he spent four seasons with the Patriots.

FORMER UK ASSISTANT DIES
The Kentucky football program is mourning the death of a former assistant football coach. The UK athletic department announced yesterday that Steve Ortmayer passed away after a brief illness. Ortmayer served in a number of roles, including assistant head coach under former Wildcats boss Rich Brooks from 2003-to-2009. Ortmayer was 77.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
The NBA All-Star break is over for four teams as the second half of the season gets underway tonight. The Wizards go up against the Grizzlies in Memphis and the Spurs play the Mavericks in Dallas. Eleven games are on tap tomorrow. The defending champion Lakers return on Friday.

Paul Pierce, Chris Bosh, and Chris Webber highlight 14 finalists for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Bill Russell, already in as a player, is now a finalist as a coach. The Class of 2021 will be revealed during the NCAA Final Four next month, with inductions in September.

The NHL is getting set to return to the worldwide leader in sports. According to Sportsnet, the NHL has agreed to a seven-year deal with ESPN. It’s expected to begin next season, with the network having the right to broadcast the Stanley Cup Final four times over the life of the contract.

The Super Bowl champion Buccaneers are holding on to linebacker Lavonte David. Multiple reports say he’s agreed to a two-year, 25-million dollar contract, with 20-million guaranteed. Head coach Bruce Arians had promised at Tampa Bay’s boat parade that David would be re-signed.

Nine NFL teams used the franchise tag before Tuesday’s deadline. Among those tagged were Bucs receiver Chris Godwin, Jets safety Marcus Maye, Giants defensive lineman Leonard Williams, and Saints safety Marcus Williams. They still have until mid-July to sign long-term deals.
