A status hearing is set for January 19th for 35-year-old Dawn Metcalf of Murray.  Metcalf pleaded not guilty in Calloway Circuit Court earlier this week in connection with three separate cases in which she is accused of receiving stolen property-a firearm and receiving stolen property of more than $1,000 but less than $10-thousand.   She was arrested in November.

In other court news, a sentencing hearing is scheduled for today for Benjamin Jones, who was found guilty of second degree manslaughter in connection with the death of 53-year-old Luis C. Mancilla of Murray in December, 2020.  Jones was found guilty of shooting Mancilla at a residence near Coldwater.

Governor Beshear used his State of the Commonwealth address last night touting his record of economic development and indicated Kentucky’s future is “brighter than its ever been.”  Beshear-who’s running for re-elelction this year-urged state lawmakers to pump more money into education, raise teacher salaries and also asked lawmakers to legalize medical marijuana for those with certain debilitating conditions.

He also called on lawmakers for additional funding and other charges to shore up the state’s troubled juvenile justice system.

Kentucky’s elections could look different soon.  That’s according to Secretary of State Michael Adams who yesterday told lawmakers the commonwealth’s plan for elections could do with some tweaks.  Adams wants more voting locations.  November’s election day was plagued with issues across Kentucky including huge lines at polling places.  Officials say some of the issues were due to short staffing.
