The National Weather Service in Paducah says a strong fall storm is approaching the area tomorrow and very gusty winds are expected across the region tonight. Meteorologists say winds of up to 45 miles per hour from the south are expected and will continue through tomorrow morning. Moderate to heavy rain showers are forecast but no severe weather is expected.

Calloway County celebrated its 200th anniversary with several events yesterday. Lieutenant Governor Jacqueline Coleman was one of the dignitaries on hand for an event yesterday morning and Murray State University held an event last evening at the newly renovated Lovett Auditorium.

Two area school districts have canceled classes for today and Monday due to a flu outbreak. McCracken and Crittenden County will not have classes until next week.

The River’s Edge International Film Festival is about to enter its 18th year and one of its documentaries will document the tornado in Western Kentucky last December 10th. WPSD reports “105 Miles: Catastrophe in Kentucky” follows the trail of destruction left by the deadly twister and will feature interviews with survivors. The film will be shown November 11th at the Maiden Alley Cinema in Paducah.

US Senator Mitch McConnell announced earlier this week the Department of Housing and Urban Development will provide Kentucky with 48.9 million dollars to help victims of last December’s tornados and flooding earlier this year in Eastern Kentucky. The funding will come through the Community Block Grant Development Program.

Lyon County officials say they have lifted the burn ban there following recent rainfall, joining several counties including Calloway who made the announcement this week. However, the region is still experiencing extreme drought conditions and officials are asking those who do burn to be careful around still dry vegetation and crops.

The Powerball jackpot climbs to its third highest give away amount Saturday night. The jackpot is worth $1.5 billion with the cash option to the winner nearly $746 million.

A reminder to set your clocks back one hour before going to bed tomorrow night as Daylight Savings Time will end at 2 am Sunday morning as Standard Time returns meaning days will be shorter over the next few months.

HS Football: Murray High opens play in the Class 2-A playoffs tonight on the road at Butler County. Kickoff is set for 7:30 in Morgantown with pregame at 6:30 on WNBS. Other games include Mayfield hosting Todd Central, Hopkinsville goes to Franklin Simpson, Trigg County travels to Hart County snd Caldwell County goes to McLean County.

Last night in the Class 5-A playoffs: Owensboro crushed Christian County 54-16.

HS Volleyball: In the KHSAA State Quarterfinals Thursday, McCracken County fell to Bowling Green three sets to two. The Lady Mustangs led the match 2-0 before the Lady Pueples won the last three sets.

College Football: Murray State is off this weekend and will close out the home portion of its schedule next Saturday afternoon hosting Robert Morris.

Action tomorrow includes Kentucky visiting Missouri in Southeastern Conference action which also has second ranked Tennessee traveling to top ranked Georgia and Vanderbilt welcoming South Carolina. Other action has Louisville hosting James Madison.

College Basketball: After a five year investigation, the University of Louisville learned its punishment Thursday in the Adidas, former coach Rick Pitino and former player Brian Bowen scandal. The school will do two years probation, receive a five thousand dollar fine and fewer recruiting days. The good news for the Cards and new coach Kenny Payne is there will not be a post season ban.

College Soccer: Murray State’s women’s team upset top seed Valparaiso 1-0 in the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament Thursday. The Racers will face Missouri State on Sunday at 1 pm.

College Volleyball: Murray State concludes its 2022 home schedule with two Missouri Valley Conference matches. The Racers entertain Illinois-Chicago this evening at 6 and Valparaiso tomorrow afternoon at 3 in Racer Arena. Murray State lost matches to both opponents in three sets earlier this season.
