YOUNG NAMED OVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sophomore forward Katelyn Young of the Murray State women’s basketball team has been named as the OVC Player of the Week for the second consecutive week. Young averaged a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds on a week in which she shot 71 percent from the floor over two Racer wins.

WHITAKER LEADS TIGER COMEBACK
In high school basketball last night, Grant Whitaker scored 19 points to lead Murray High to a 59-54 comeback win over Muhlenberg County in the Tigers home opener. The Mustangs led by 9 in the first quarter and the Tigers trailed 44-40 after three before outscoring the visitors 19-10 in the final frame. Trey Boggess added 11 for the Tigers while Lincoln English added 10.

LAKERS DROP TWO AT GRAVES COUNTY
Calloway County dropped a doubleheader against Graves County at the Eagles Nest. In the girls game, Graves County jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 57 to 28 win over Calloway County. Sayler Lowe led the 1-2 Lady Lakers with 8 points while Neely Jackson paced 4-0 Graves County with 22. In the boys game, Drew Thompson scored 28 points as 3-1 Graves County pulled away from Calloway County for a 71-45 win. Eli Finley led the 2-2 Lakers with 18 points with Conner Lockhart adding 11.

RACER SOFTBALL RELEASES SCHEDULE FOR 2022
Murray State softball has released its 2022 season schedule. The Racers open the season February 11 with a tournament at DePaul, followed by tournaments the next three weekends at UAB, Mercer, and SIU. MSU will host the Racer Classic March 10-13. Other non-conference opponents are UTEP and Middle Tennessee. The Racers will open OVC competition on March 19-20 on the road at SIU-Edwardsville. The conference schedule decreases from the 34-game format to 28 games this season with the departure of Jacksonville State and Eastern Kentucky.

AREA HOCKEY ROUNDUP
In hockey, Nashville beat the Red Wings 5-2 in Detroit. Nashville stays on the road to play the New York Islanders tomorrow night… The Blues got their revenge on the Panthers after a 4-3 overtime win in St. Louis. The Blues host the Red Wings tomorrow.

TITANS ACTIVATE BYARD
The Tennessee Titans activated safety Kevin Byard off the reserve/COVID-19 list. Byard did not miss a game because the Titans had a bye last week. Tennessee hosts the Jaguars on Sunday.

GRIZZLIES HOST MAVERICKS
The Grizzlies are back in action tonight. Memphis hosts the Dallas Mavericks tonight. The Grizzlies won’t be at full strength, as Brandon Clarke and Ziaire Williams are out and Kyle Anderson is doubtful to play.

MORANT’S HIGH SCHOOL RETIRES HIS JERSEY
Memphis Grizzlies Star Ja Morant’s jersey was retired Tuesday night by Crestwood High School. Morant graduated as Crestwood’s all time leading scorer, finishing with 1,679 points. In his final two seasons with the Knights, he averaged 27 points oer game, earning South Carolina Class 3A All-State honors both seasons. After two stellar seasons at Murray State, Morant was selected second overall in the 2019 NBA Draft by Memphis where he earned NBA Rookie of the Year honors.

TENNESSEE’S MR. FOOTBALL WINNERS ANNOUNCED
At least five players committed to play college football at Power 5 conference schools are among the nine Tennessee Titans Mr. Football winners for this year. The awards were handed out at Nissan Stadium in Nashville last night. Alabama quarterback commit Ty Simpson of Westview High won the award in Class 2A, while Kentucky commits Barion Brown of Pearl-Cohn and Destin Wade of Summit won the awards in 4A and 6A respectively. Memphis Christian Brothers star, and Ohio State commit, Dallan Hayden won the award in Division Two-AAA for the second straight year.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
The NBA is warning unvaccinated players that they soon won’t be able to play games in Toronto. ESPN obtained a memo from the league that warns teams that unvaccinated players won’t be allowed to travel to Canada starting on January 15th due to a new Canadian law. It also stated that unvaccinated players who leave the country with a temporary VISA status won’t be allowed to re-enter the United States.

Trail Blazers guard CJ McCollum is out indefinitely after suffering a collapsed lung. He underwent a CT scan on Tuesday which found the injury, which he attained in Portland’s game against the Boston Celtics this past Saturday. The Blazers haven’t announced how many games McCollum will miss, but he did not travel with the team for its game against the Warriors tonight.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady is adding more hardware to his trophy case. The 44-year-old has been named Sports Illustrated’s 2021 Sportsman of the Year. Brady also won the award back in 2005 after guiding the Patriots to three Super Bowl victories in four seasons.

We’ve seen the last of Ryan Fitzpatrick on the gridiron this season. The Washington Football Team quarterback will undergo season-ending arthroscopic surgery on his right hip. The 39-year-old Fitzpatrick suffered a hip subluxation in Washington’s Week One home loss to the LA Chargers. ESPN reported that Fitzpatrick was dealing with pain and swelling in his hip and groin that prevented him from rehabbing his injury.

The International Boxing Hall of Fame is announcing eight members of its Class of 2022. Roy Jones Jr., James Toney, and Miguel Cotto highlight this year’s class. The trio will be inducted alongside Holly Holm and Regina Hamlisch, as well as publicist Bill Caplan, journalist Ron Borges, and historian/producer Bob Yalen.

Tim Kurkjian is receiving a distinguished honor for his career covering the MLB. The longtime writer and current ESPN analyst was named the winner of the 2022 Baseball Writers’ Association of America’s Career Excellence Award. The 64-year-old Kurkjian has covered the MLB since 1981.

Another LSU quarterback is entering the transfer portal. A week after Brian Kelly was named the Tigers’ next head coach, starting quarterback Max Johnson announced that he plans to enter the transfer portal. The sophomore threw 27 touchdowns and six interceptions this season.

The UConn Huskies women’s basketball team is going to be without their top player for up to two months. After undergoing MRI and CT scans, sophomore guard Paige Bueckers suffered a fractured tibial plateau against Notre Dame on Sunday. The expected recovery time for Bueckers is between six and eight weeks.
