Basketball Round-up

Tevin Brown had 20 points and DJ Burns scored 19 as Murray State rolled past Campbellsville 98-61 on Monday night at the CFSB Center. Burns scored 10 points in the first 10 minutes, and finished the first half with 17. Racer head coach Matt McMahon credited Burns with setting the pace for his team with his aggressive start.  Justice Hill added 15 points and eight assists for the Racers while Trae Hannibal scored 10. Murray State improved to 6-1 with the win as they get set to host Middle Tennessee Saturday night.Off to their best start in more than 30 years, the Murray State women take their 5-1 record to Evansville for a 6 pm game. Airtime is set for 5:30 tonight on Froggy 103.7.Three of our local high school teams open the season tonight. Calloway County hosts McCracken County in a girls-boys twinbill with coverage beginning at 5:45 on 104.5 WBZB. The Murray High girls also open at home as they host Graves County, and airtime for that game is set for 7 on WNBS AM and FM. The Murray boys open the season on Saturday.

Number-10 Kentucky beat Central Michigan 85-57 in Lexington.

UofL Basketball Preparing For ACC/Big Ten Challenge

(Louisville, KY)  —  The UofL basketball team is preparing for a big game.  The Cardinals will face Michigan State tomorrow night in East Lansing as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.  The Cards are 5-and-1 so far this season.  UofL was crushed by Wisconsin in last year’s Challenge.

Vols Host Presbyterian

(Knoxville, TN)  —  The 15th-ranked Tennessee basketball team will be back in action tonight.  The Volunteers will face Presbyterian at Thompson-Boling Arena tonight.  The Vols are four-and-one so far this season.  The game is set for 7:30.

Blues Host Lightning Tonight(St. Louis, MO)  —  The Blues are back on the ice tonight hosting the two-time defending champion Lightning in the front end of a home-and-home. The teams will then rematch on Thursday in Tampa.  The Blues are 3-2-and-1 in their last six games and are 11-7-and-3 on the season.

Predators Host Blue Jackets(Nashville, TN)  —  The Preds are back in action on home ice tonight.  Nashville hosts the Columbus Blue Jackets.  The Predators enter at 11-9-and-1, while Columbus is 12-and-7.

Grizzlies Play Raptors In Canada(Toronto, ON)  —  The Grizzlies are heading across the border.  Memphis plays the Raptors in Toronto tonight.  The Grizzlies improved to 10-and-10 after a win over Sacramento on Sunday.  Toronto enters the game at 9-and-12.

Washington Narrowly Beats Seahawks On Monday Night Football

(Landover, MD)  —  It was far from an offensive masterpiece, but the Washington Football Team came out on top.  Washington defeated the Seahawks 17-15 on Monday Night Football in Landover.  Taylor Heinicke threw for 223 yards, one touchdown and one pick in the winning effort.  J.D. McKissic scored on the ground and through the air, and fellow Washington running back Antonio Gibson rushed for 111 yards.  Despite throwing for 247 yards and two touchdowns, Russell Wilson was off all night.  He did manage to throw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Freddie Swain with 15 seconds left, but Seattle could not get the two-point conversion.

Report: Brian Kelly Leaving Notre Dame For LSU

(Baton Rouge, LA)  —  The LSU Tigers are reportedly landing a big name head coach.  According to multiple reports, the Tigers will make Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly the next leading man in Baton Rouge.  Kelly will depart the Fighting Irish with more wins than any head coach in program history.  LSU was in search of a new coach following parting ways with Ed Orgeron.

Corey Seager Agrees To 10-Year, $325M Deal With Texas Rangers

(Arlington, TX)  —  Corey Seager is the latest 300-million dollar man in Major League Baseball.  ESPN reports the star shortstop is agreeing to a 10-year deal with the Texas Rangers.  The contract will pay Seager 325-million dollars over the life of the contract.  The 27-year-old has hit two-95 with 100 home runs in just over 600 games between 2016 and 2021 for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Washington Hires Kalen DeBoer As Head Football Coach

(Seattle, WA)  —  The Huskies have a new football coach.  Washington hired Fresno State head coach Kalen DeBoer on Monday.  DeBoer comes off a 9-and-3 season with Fresno and was the offensive coordinator for the Indiana Hoosiers in 2019.  He was also the three-time NAIA National Coach of the Year at the University of Sioux Falls in the 2000s and left that job with a 67-and-3 record.  DeBoer replaces Jimmy Lake, who was fired by U-dub on November 14th after less than two seasons in charge.

McCaffrey To Miss Rest Of Season With Ankle Injury

(Charlotte, NC)  —  Christian McCaffrey is having his season cut short for a second straight year.  The Panthers star running back was placed on the season-ending injured reserve Monday after he suffered a left ankle in Sunday’s game against the Dolphins.  McCaffrey had already missed five games with a hamstring injury and will have his season come to an end after playing in only seven games.  This comes after a slew of injuries in 2020 that limited McCaffrey to three games.  The NFL’s highest paid RB is expected to be ready for the 2022 season.

Spencer Rattler Enters Transfer Portal

(Undated)  —  One of the top collegiate quarterbacks is now up for grabs.  Spencer Rattler announced Monday he has entered the transfer portal as he intends to leave the Oklahoma Sooners.  Rattler thanked his teammates, coaches and family in the announcement, concluding it with “Thank you again, Oklahoma. I will miss you”.  The former Heisman favorite regressed in his sophomore campaign, eventually losing the starting job to freshman QB Caleb Williams.  Rattler threw for 1,483 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions over nine games in 2021.

Report: Mariners Agree To Five-Year Deal With Robbie Ray

(Seattle, WA)  —  The reigning AL Cy Young award winner is on the move.  ESPN reports the Seattle Mariners are signing left-handed pitcher Robbie Ray to a five-year contract worth 115 million dollars.  Ray went 13-and-7 with a 2.84 earned run average last season with the Toronto Blue Jays before winning the Cy Young.  He led the MLB with 248 strikeouts.  The 30-year-old joins a Mariners team that went 90-and-72 in 2021.

Mets Reportedly Signing Former Cy Young Winner Scherzer To Record-Breaking Contract

(Queens, NY)  —  The New York Mets are reportedly signing former Cy Young winner Max Scherzer to a record breaking contract.  The 37-year-old Scherzer won a World Series while with the division rival Washington Nationals in 2019, and was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers last year.  Reports say the contract is for three-years and 130-million-dollars, which would set a new record at an average-annual-value of over 43-million-dollars.

McCarthy “Feeling Okay” After Positive COVID Test

(Frisco, TX)  —  Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Mike McCarthy is feeling okay after testing positive for coronavirus.  McCarthy told reporters this afternoon he has a bit of a scratchy throat, but that’s it.  He originally believed the throat issues were from last Thursday’s game against Las Vegas.  He didn’t learn until mid-morning today about the positive test and is vaccinated.  Dan Quinn will serve as interim head coach this Thursday when Dallas faces New Orleans.

Nuggets’ Porter Out Indefinitely With Back Injury

(Denver, CO)  —  Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr. is having surgery on his lower back on Wednesday, and he could miss significant time.  Porter also had back surgery in 2018 and missed his entire rookie season.  The timetable for recovery from this surgery won’t be known until after the procedure.  The 23-year-old signed a five-year, 172-million dollar contract extension with Denver in September.  He’s averaging nine-point-nine points and six-point-six rebound per game this season.  The Nuggets are already without Jamal Murray.
