RACER SOCCER FALLS TO TENNESSEE TECH
Murray State fell to Tennessee Tech 2-1 yesterday in the second round of the OVC Soccer Tournament at Cutchin Field in Murray. In the 86th minute, Murray State tied the score at 1 on a perfectly placed ball from Hailey Cole that was headed into the goal by Audrey Henry. In the 89th minute, Merideth Nye notched the game winner on a Penalty Kick. The defeat ends an injury-riddled season for the Racers at 9-8-1. Tennessee Tech moves on to Friday’s OVC Semifinals at UT Martin.

RACERS OPEN EXHIBITION PLAY TONIGHT
The Murray State women’s and men’s basketball teams will begin the season with exhibition games tonight at the CFSB Center. The Racer women host Division II Trevecca Nazarene at 5. The Trojans went 6-6 in a COVID-19 abbreviated season last year. Airtime is set for 4:30 today on WNBS AM and FM. The Racer men host Brescia at 7 pm. It will be an historic night as the Bearcats Sarah Gayler becomes the first women to be head coach of a men’s basketball team in the 71-year history of the NAIA. Murray State’s returns 1,000-point scorers, Tevin Brown and KJ Williams were each named to the All-OVC Preseason Team. Airtime is set for 6:30 on Froggy 103.7.

RACERS RALLY UNDONE BY LATE TSU SCORE
Tennessee State survived blowing a 21-point lead to beat Murray State 27-21 Saturday night at Nissan Stadium in Nashville. Down 21-0 with 8:04 remaining in the third quarter, Preston Rice came off the bench to lead three scoring drives. Rice scored on a 6-yard run late in the third quarter, Demonta Witherspoon 124 yard rushing night included a 4 yard score early in the fourth quarter, and then Rice connected with Lamartez Brooks to tie the game with 4:30 remaining. TSU quarterback Geremy Hickbottom’s game-winning score came on a 7-yard run with 1:41 remaining. The Racers fell to 3-5 overall, and 0-3 in the OVC heading into Saturday’s home game with Tennessee Tech.

CATS, CARDS, AND VANDY LOSE
Elsewhere, Kentucky lost to Mississippi State 31-17 in Starkville, Louisville lost to NC State 28-13 in Raleigh, and Vanderbilt lost to Missouri 37-28 in Nashville. Tennessee had the week off.

MURRAY HIGH ROLLS IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE
In high school football Friday night, Murray High capped a 7-2 regular season with a 49-0 win at Fulton County. The Tigers host Caldwell County in the opening round of the 2A Playoffs this Friday night.

TITANS NOTCH OVERTIME WIN
Randy Bullock’s 44-yard field goal in overtime was the difference in the Tennessee Titans edged the Colts 34-31 in Indianapolis. Ryan Tannehill threw for 265 yards and three touchdowns, connecting with A.J. Brown ten times for 155 yards and a score at Tennessee improved to 6-2.

MEMPHIS HOSTS DENVER TONIGHT
One of the best teams in the Western Conference comes to FedExForum tonight. The Grizzlies host the Denver Nuggets. Memphis is 3-and-3 after losing to Miami on Saturday. Denver enters at 4-and-2.

PREDS HEAD TO CANADA
The Nashville Predators are heading across the border. Nashville plays the Flames tomorrow night in Calgary. The Preds are 4-and-4 after beating the New York Islanders in a shootout on Saturday.

NASHVILLE DRAWS IN FLORIDA
Nashville SC made out with a point this weekend. Nashville drew Orlando City SC 1-1 on Sunday in Orlando. Hany Mukhtar scored for Nashville in the 53rd minute. Nashville is third in the MLS Eastern Conference with 53 points.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
The Astros have forced a Game Six of the World Series. Houston defeated the Braves 9-5 in Game Five in Cumberland. Jose Urquidy picked up the win for Houston. A.J. Minter took the loss. The Braves have a 3-2 series lead. Game Six in Houston on Tuesday.

Cowboys back-up quarterback Cooper Rush threw a go-ahead touchdown pass to Amari Cooper with under a minute in regulation as Dallas defeated Minnesota 20-16 at US Bank Stadium. Rush got the start for an injured Dak Prescott, and he passed for 325 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. The Vikings sit at second place in the NFC North with a 3-and-4 record.

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons are in the top ten after another exciting weekend of college football. Wake Forest jumped to number-9 in the coaches poll after it beat Duke 45-7 to improve to 8-and-oh. The top five of Georgia, Cincinnati, Alabama, Oklahoma and Ohio State remained unchanged after all five teams won over the weekend.

The Atlanta Falcons will be without one of their top receivers moving forward. Calvin Ridley announced Sunday he will “step away from football at this time” as he plans to focus on his mental health. The 2018 first-round draft pick added the “past few weeks have been very challenging” and thanked his teammates, coaches and fans for supporting his decision.

TCU and head football coach Gary Patterson are parting ways effective immediately. After over 20 years as the program’s head coach, the school decided to part ways with Patterson on Sunday. Jerry Kill has been named the interim head coach as Patterson will “assist in the transition to take place.” Patterson ends his career at TCU with a record of 181-79.

Lucas Herbert is celebrating his first career PGA Tour victory at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. The Aussie shot a 69 in the final round to finish the tournament atop the leaderboard at 15-under par. Patrick Reed and Danny Lee tied for second place at 14-under. With the win, Herbert has earned 500 points in the FedEx Cup standings.

Alex Bowman is going home with a win and a fresh new feud. Bowman took home the win at the NASCAR Xfinity 500 at Martinsville. After the win, Bowman attempted to celebrate but Denny Hamlin refused to let him by blocking his car. Hamlin joins Kyle Larson, Martin Truex Jr., and Chase Elliott who will be racing for the Cup Series crown in the finale.
