
BOMBERS AND MARSHALS ADVANCE TO VOLLEYBALL SEMIFINALS
First round action concluded last night at the Region 1 Volleyball Tournament at Ballard Memorial High School. The Bombers advanced to the semifinals with a 3-0 sweep of Hickman County, and Marshall County also moved on with a 3-0 sweep of Paducah Tilghman. The semifinals will be tonight and the championship match is tomorrow night.
RACER MANIA IS THURSDAY
The Murray State men’s and women’s basketball teams will get the season underway tomorrow night at Racer Mania presented by The Murray Bank at the CFSB Center. Racer Mania features introductions of both teams, 3-point and dunk contests and a scrimmage. Fans will enjoy performances from Murray State’s spirit groups and mascot, Dunker, as well as other interactions between teams. Racer Mania begins tomorrow night at 6:30.
PREDS WIN
The Nashville Predators scored in each period in their 3-1 win over San Jose in the Music City last night. The Preds host the New York Islanders on Saturday afternoon.
GRIZZLIES AT PORTLAND TONIGHT
The Grizzlies west coast road trip continues tonight. Memphis heads up to Portland to play the Trail Blazers. Memphis is off to a 2-and-1 start to the season.
OFFICIAL WHO WORKED TITANS GAME DIES
The NFL has confirmed the death of a longtime official. NFL replay official Carl Madsen died Sunday while returning home from the Titans-Chiefs game. He was 71-years-old. Madsen was driving back home to Weldon Spring, Missouri, when he passed away and police found his stalled car on Interstate 65 North. An Air Force Veteran, Madsen was in his 12th year as a replay official after spending 12 years as an on-field official.
BLUES PLACE TWO IN COVID LIST
The Blues will be without Ryan O’Reilly and Brandon Saad after both players were placed on the team’s COVID-protocols list. They will be sidelined at least ten days. In addition, St. Louis has recalled forward Dakota Joshua from the Springfield Thunderbirds. Joshua has appeared in five games with Springfield this season, logging one assist and six penalty minutes.
NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
The Braves took Game One of the World Series, defeating the Astros 6-2 in Houston. Jorge Soler and Adam Duvall each homered for the Braves. Atlanta starter Charlie Morton exited the game after suffering a fractured bone in his leg. A.J. Minter earned the win for Atlanta. Game Two is tonight in Houston.
Stan Bowman resigned as the president of hockey operations for the Chicago Blackhawks. The decision comes after investigators released their findings on how the team handled sexual assault allegations against former video coach Brad Aldrich during the 2010 Stanley Cup run. Senior director of hockey administration Al MacIsaac is also no longer with the team, leaving no Blackhawks executives remaining from the 2010 team. Kyle Davidson has taken over as interim general manager.
More and more people want the NFL’s investigation into the Washington Football Team to be made public. Two former Washington employees showed up to the NFL Owners meeting in New York with a letter asking for the investigation to be made public. Despite pressure, the NFL says it will hold firm on keeping the details private.
Allen Lazard was put on the COVID list on Tuesday, leaving Green Bay without its top two wideouts for its Thursday Night Football game against the Arizona Cardinals. Davante Adams was placed on the COVID list on Monday, and Lazard was placed on the list because he is a close contact. ESPN reports that all indications point to Lazard being unvaccinated.
Mike Tomlin emphatically shut down any speculation that he would be in the mix for a position with USC or LSU. Tomlin said at the end of his weekly press conference, “Never say never, but never. OK? Anybody else got any questions about any college jobs. There’s not a booster with a big enough blank check.”
