WATTS AND DEMIER RECEIVE WEEKLY OVC HONORS
Murray State freshman outside hitter Brooke Lynn Watts is the OVC Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week and OVC Newcomer of the Week while freshman setter Bailey DeMier is OVC Co-Setter of the Week for the second straight week. Watts averaged 5.17 kills per set on a .354 hitting percentage while DeMier propelled the Racer offense to a .249 hitting percentage, averaging 12.75 assists per set to help Murray State to two sweeps over Tennessee State and extend the Racers winning streak to four heading into Friday’s action at Belmont.

MCCRACKEN AND CFS ADVANCE IN REGION 1 VOLLEYBALL TOURNEY
At the Region 1 Volleyball Tournament last night at Ballard Memorial, McCracken County swept Graves County 3-0, and Christian Fellowship defeated Carlisle County 3-2. First round action continues tonight with Marshall County facing Paducah Tilghman at 5:30, followed by Ballard Memorial and Hickman County at 7:30. The winners will advance to Wednesday’s semifinals.

CALLOWAY FOOTBALL GAME MOVED TO THURSDAY
Due to an officials shortage this week, Calloway County’s football game at Union County has been moved ahead. Instead of Friday, the Lakers will face the Braves on Thursday at 7:30. Coverage begins at 7:15 on 104.5 WBZB.

RACER BASKETBALL RETURNS THIS WEEK
Murray State basketball returns to the court on Thursday with Racer Mania, presented by The Murray Bank. Trick-Or-Treat candy will be available at Gate-B from 6 p.m until Racer Mania begins at 6:30. The event is a preview ahead of women and men’s exhibition action on Monday at the CFSB Center. The Racer men face Brescia at 7 as they look to put a 13-13 season in the rear-view mirror. The Racer women face Trevecca Nazarene at 5. Both games will air on the Racer Radio Network and ESPN Plus.

MARMOL NAMED CARDINALS NEW MANAGER
The Cardinals have named Oliver Marmol as the 51st manager in club history. At 35-years-old, he is now the youngest manager in the majors. The Florida native served as Mike Shildt’s bench coach over the past three seasons and was also the Cards’ sixth-round selection in the 2007 MLB Draft.

AREA HOCKEY ROUNDUP
In hockey, St. Louis remains perfect this season after blanking the Los Angeles Kings 3-0 at Enterprise Center. The Blues host the Avalanche on Thursday. The Predators are back in Nashville tonight for a date with the Sharks. San Jose is off to a 4-and-1 start.

MEMPHIS UPDATE
The Grizzlies west coast road trip continues tomorrow night as Memphis heads up to Portland to play the Trail Blazers. Memphis is off to a 2-and-1 start to the season.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM ASSIST ACCIDENT VICTIM
Members of an eastern Kentucky high school football team are being credited with saving a crash victim’s life. Assistant coaches and members of the team returning to Jackson County early into the morning from a Friday night loss at Caverna stopped to assist a man whose car had run into a ditch. Authorities say the team helped get the victim onto the blacktop and later onto a stretcher and that their actions were key to saving the man’s life. The man was taken to the hospital, but his current condition hasn’t been released.

OWENSBORO STAR INDUCTED INTO LOUISVILLE HALL OF FAME
A leader of Louisville’s first College World Series team is now a member of the school’s athletics hall of fame. Logan Johnson was inducted on Friday. Johnson holds UofL baseball records for career doubles, career hit by pitch, single season HBP and single season doubles. The former Owensboro High School player and coach led the Cardinals to the 2007 CWS.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
It wasn’t easy on the eyes, but the Saints were able to eke out a 13-10 win over the Seahawks in rainy Seattle. New Orleans rookie kicker Brian Johnson made two kicks, including the game-winning 33-yarder with less than two minutes to go. Alvin Kamara had ten catches for 128 yards and a touchdown. Outside of an 84-yard touchdown pass to DK Metcalf, the Seahawks offense struggled with just 219 total yards.

The fall classic will get underway tonight. Game One of the World Series between the Braves and Astros will take place in Houston. It’s the first appearance since 1999 in the World Series for Atlanta. Charlie Morton gets the start for the Braves. Houston is making its first World Series appearance since 2019. Framber Valdez takes the mound for the Astros.

Davante Adams tested positive for COVID-19 and was placed on the reserve list on Monday. According to sources, Adams tested positive for the virus but has not been forced to follow protocols for unvaccinated players. If Adams is asymptomatic he would need two negative PCR tests 24 hours apart to play in Thursday night’s game against the undefeated Arizona Cardinals.

The San Francisco 49ers are sticking with Jimmy Garoppolo as their starting quarterback. Head coach Kyle Shanahan declared that Garoppolo will remain the starter with the hope that rookie quarterback Trey Lance will return to play situationally against the Chicago Bears. The expectation is that Lance will return to practice on Wednesday.

Auburn head football coach Bryan Harsin is declining to disclose whether or not he has received or plans to receive the COVID vaccine. Last week, the university mandated that all employees by fully vaccinated against COVID by December 8th. Harsin has not discussed his vaccination status going back to SEC media day in July, saying it is a deeply personal decision for everyone.

With an injury to starting quarterback Zach Wilson, the New York Jets are bringing back former Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles. New York will be without Wilson for at least two games as he recovers from a sprained knee. Flacco signed a one-year deal with the Eagles a season after serving as the Jets backup quarterback.

Ken Griffey Jr. is back with the Seattle Mariners, but he won’t be wearing a uniform. Griffey Jr. bought an ownership stake in the team. Mariners chairman John Stanton says Griffey Jr. bought the shares from a minority owner who still kept a stake with the team.
