Weekend Football Previews

Murray State begins the first of five consecutive conference games tomorrow afternoon when they welcome Austin Peay for a 2 pm Homecoming tilt. The Racers were picked to win the OVC, while the Governors were picked second, but whoever loses the game is likely out of the title chase with two conference losses. Murray State head coach Dean Hood says the Govs have been good, except when they pile up turnovers, which he says will be a key. Airtime for tomorrow’s game will be at 1:30 on FROGGY 103.7.

Murray High wraps up 2A District One play tonight when they face 3rd-ranked Mayfield at War Memorial Stadium. The Tigers are coming off a loss to Caldwell County. Airtime for tonight’s game is set for 6 on WNBS AM and FM.

Calloway County is in a must win situation tonight at 4A District One leader Logan County. A win puts the Lakers in the playoffs, but to make that happen, they will have to find a way to stop quarterback Davin Yates, who completes 65% of his passes. Airtime for tonight’s game is set for 6:30 on 104.5 WBZB.

 

Racers Sweep Tigers for Third-Straight Win

 

Murray State opened homecoming weekend sweeping Tennessee State on Thursday, 25-17, 25-18, 25-20.The Murray State Racers volleyball team (11-9, 5-5 OVC) opened Murray State’s homecoming weekend with a three-set sweep over the Tennessee State Tigers (9-11, 1-10), 25-17, 25-18, 25-20.This is the Racer’s third conference win in a row while the Tigers have dropped seven straight. Murray State hosts Tennessee State again tonight (Oct.22)at 6:00 p.m. CTat Racer Arena.

 

Racers and Golden Eagles Draw Even

Murray State Women’s Soccer and Tennessee Tech came to a 2-2 draw after 110 minutes at Tech Soccer Field in Cookeville, Tennessee on Thursday (Oct. 21). Gracey Pack and Rebecca Kubin Score for the Racers. Murray State will return to Cutchin Field on Sunday (Oct 24) for the final regular season against Austin Peay. Senior Day festivities will take place following the game.

 

UK‘s Stoops Considered For National Coaching Award

(Lexington, KY)  —  Kentucky football coach Mark Stoops is being considered for a national award.  Stoops is one of 16 coaches on the midseason watch list for the Dodd Trophy.  The award is named for former coach Bobby Dodd and takes into account a team’s on-the-field performance, as well as the program’s Academic Progress Rate and the coach’s commitment to community service.  The 14th-ranked Wildcats are off this week after suffering their first loss of the season to number-one Georgia last Saturday.

 

Titans Host Chiefs After Short Week Of Prep

(Nashville, TN)  —  The Titans will try to extend their winning streak to three games on Sunday afternoon.  Tennessee will face the Kansas City Chiefs at Nissan Stadium.  It’s a short week for the Titans who beat the Buffalo Bills, 34-31, on Monday night.  The game is set for noon.

 

Cardinals Host Eagles

(Louisville, KY)  —  The UofL football team will return to the field tomorrow afternoon.  After a week off, Louisville will face Boston College at Cardinal Stadium.  The Cardinals are nearly a touchdown favorite over the Eagles.  The game is set for 4 o’clock

 

Vols In Tuscaloosa To Face Crimson Tide

(Tuscaloosa, AL)  —  The Volunteers will take on defending national champion Alabama in Tuscaloosa tomorrow night.  UT is more than a three touchdown underdog against the Tide.  Tennessee hasn’t beaten Alabama since 2006.  The game is set for 7 o’clock Eastern Time.

Browns Push Past Broncos

(Cleveland, OH)  —  The Browns are pushing past the Broncos for a primetime win.  D’Ernest Johnson rushed for 146 yards and a touchdown as Cleveland took down Denver 17-14 at home on Thursday Night Football.  Case Keenum threw for 199 yards and a touchdown for the Browns, who move to 4-and-3.  Teddy Bridgewater threw for two touchdowns and an interception in defeat.  Denver is 3-and-4.

Dodgers Win Game Five Of NLCS

(Los Angeles, CA)  —  Chris Taylor is keeping the Dodgers postseason hopes alive.  Taylor mashed three home runs to lead Los Angeles to an 11-2 win over the Braves in Game Five of the NLCS.  The infielder became the first player in MLB postseason history to hit three homers in an elimination game.  A. J. Pollock also had a big game with two home runs and four RBI.  The Dodgers now trail the series 3-2.  Freddie Freeman drove in both of Atlanta’s runs with a two-run bomb in the first.

Report: Ben Simmons To Meet With 76ers Management On Friday

(Philadelphia, PA)  —  It looks like Ben Simmons might be getting some answers soon.  ESPN reports Simmons is expected to meet with Philadelphia 76ers management on Friday to discuss his status with the team.  Simmons has been insubordinate during 76ers practice this week and has had friction with the franchise since this summer when he requested a trade.  He recently put his southern New Jersey home up for sale, so Simmons does not seem like he wants to stay in Philly.

Astros Look To Close Out Red Sox In Game Six

(Houston, TX)  —  The Astros are looking to close out the ALCS tonight. Houston returns home after winning two straight games over the Red Sox on the road. The Astros are placing their World Series aspirations in the hands of rookie pitcher Luis Garcia. Opposite him with be Nathan Eovaldi for Boston, which now trails the series 3-2. The Red Sox plated only three total runs in the last two games of the series.

NBA Finalizes 75th Anniversary Team

(Undated) — The NBA’s 75th Anniversary team is complete, however with a twist. Due to a tie, there are 76 players being honored on the team instead of 75. Among the players honored are Michael Jordan, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Larry Bird, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James. The list also features legends such as Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell. Players who didn’t make the all-time team include: Dwight Howard, Tracy McGrady, and Dikembe Mutombo.

Alabama Hosts Tennessee, Oklahoma State Visits Iowa State In College Football Week Eight

(Undated) — Another exciting week of college football is on tap as Week Eight rolls through. Fourth-ranked Alabama will be at home when it hosts Tennessee on Saturday. Second-ranked Oklahoma will look to keep rolling as it visits Kansas. Third-ranked Cincinnati will also be on the road for a battle against Navy. Ninth-ranked Oklahoma State will look to be up for the challenge on the road against Iowa State.

Six New Schools Joining AAC

(Irving, TX)  —  Six new schools are joining the American Athletic Conference.  The University of Texas at San Antonio, Florida Atlantic, The University of Alabama at Birmingham, and North Texas announced they had accepted membership invitations.  The University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Rice University in Houston will also join the AAC, making it a 14-team football and men’s and woman’s basketball league.

Longhorns Linebacker Jake Ehlinger Cause Of Death: Overdose

(Austin, TX)  —  The cause of death of a Texas Longhorns linebacker is being revealed. The family of Jake Ehlinger says he died from an accidental drug overdose in May.  In a statement, they said they believe he took Xanax laced with fentanyl. The family said they are sharing the news in the hopes they can prevent other tragic deaths. Jake is the brother of former Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger, who was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts earlier this year.

NASCAR Rolls Into Kansas Sunday

(Kansas City, KS) — The NASCAR Cup Series playoffs continue on Sunday. The Cup Series rolls into Kansas Speedway for the Hollywood Casino 400. Kyle Larson will look to keep rolling after two straight wins. So far the number-five car is the only one to punch its ticket to the Championship Four. Larson will start on the pole. Ryan Blaney will start alongside Larson.

Matsuyama Takes Lead At Zozo Championship In Japan

(Japan)  —  Hideki Matsuyama is taking a one shot lead into the weekend at the Zozo Championship in Japan.  Matsuyama carded a two-under 68 in Friday’s second round and sits one shot ahead of American Cameron Tringale.  Fellow American Brendan Steele is tied for third place with Matt Wallace at minus-six.
