RACERS ENJOY BYE WEEK AS TWO OVC GAMES ARE ON TAP
1-2 Murray State is on a bye week as they prepare for a rare non-conference game a week from tomorrow against Eastern Illinois, made necessary by the late OVC departure of Jacksonville State and EKU. The Panthers open OVC play tomorrow at Tennessee Tech, while Tennessee State also begins OVC play at SEMO. Elsewhere in the league, Austin Peay visits Eastern Kentucky and UT Martin is at Jacksonville State for what are now non-conference games.
CATS AND VOLS BEGIN SEC PLAY
Other games of area interest tomorrow finds 3-0 Kentucky at South Carolina for the SEC Opener on ESPN2, while Tennessee visits Florida on ESPN. Both games kick off just after 6 pm. Also, Louisville has a 2:30 game at Florida State on ESPN2, while Indiana visits Western Kentucky in a 7 pm game on the CBS Sports Network.

CARDINALS RALLY FOR 12TH STRAIGHT WIN
Paul Goldschmidt smacked two home runs as the red hot Cardinals swept the Brewers with a 8-5 win in Milwaukee. St. Louis has won 12 straight, its longest winning streak since 1982. The Cubs and Cardinals play a doubleheader today at Wrigley Field and you can hear game one at 12:25 today on WNBS AM and FM.
TITANS REPORT
The Titans got some bodies back at practice yesterday as they prepare to host the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Running back Derrick Henry and linebacker Bud Dupree were among the six players who returned to the field after missing Wednesday’s session. Henry only sat due to rest, while Dupree is battling a knee injury. After missing last weekend’s game against the Seahawks, left tackle Taylor Lewan practiced for the second straight day. The Titans will have to prepare for multiple quarterbacks this weekend, as Colts starter Carson Wentz has not practiced this week due to two sprained ankles. Indy could reportedly play both backup Jacob Eason and practice squad quarterback Brett Hundley if Wentz can’t play.
GRIZZLIES UPDATE
The Grizzlies announced their training camp roster yesterday, and made a slew of moves to go along with it. Ahead of next week’s camp, the team waived guard Carsen Edwards and center Daniel Oturu, both of whom were acquired in trades within the last five weeks. They also signed guard Shaq Buchanan and wing Sean McDermott, and they converted forward Yves Pons’ contract to a two-way deal. Memphis starts preseason play on October 5th against the defending-champion Milwaukee Bucks.
MINOR LEAGUE ROUNDUP
In Minor League baseball yesterday, the Louisville Bats split a twin bill against the Mud Hens at home, losing 3-2 in the opener of a twinbille but notching a 7-6 win in the second game. Memphis blew a four-run lead in the bottom of the ninth to lose 7-6 at Jacksonville, while Nashville hammered Columbus at home 8-1.
- NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
The Carolina Panthers are showing they are a team to be reckoned with. Sam Darnold rushed for two touchdowns to lead Carolina to 24-9 win over the Texans on Thursday Night Football in Houston. Darnold was also impressive with his arm, completing 23-of-34 passes for 304 yards. Not all was great for the Panthers as running back Christian McCaffrey exited in the first half and was quickly ruled out with a hamstring injury. Carolina moved to 3-and-oh with the victory. Rookie Davis Mills had a decent outing in his first start under center for Houston, which fell to 1-and-2. The quarterback completed 19-of-28 passes and threw for a score. Brandin Cooks had another strong game, totaling 112 yards on nine receptions. - The NFL is planning on making some changes to the Wild Card weekend schedule. Ian Rapoport is reporting that the league is likely going to have two Wild Card games take place on Saturday, three games on Sunday, and one on Monday. In the past, the Wild Card games have been split between Saturday and Sunday only. Last season was the first year that the NFL had six games in the Wild Card round after they added a seventh playoff team to each conference. Rapaport says the broadcast partner for the Monday night game has not yet been decided.
- The National Hockey League believes 30 of its 32 arenas will open at full capacity for the upcoming season. ESPN reports that was circulated to teams in a memo this week. The Montreal Canadiens are expected to only allow one-third capacity. The Vancouver Canucks are also expected to not open with a full house, but their capacity limit has not been determined yet. Also, 10 teams are expected to only allow vaccinated people into games, and another 8 will call for proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test.
- The Ryder Cup gets underway with the duo of Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth teeing it off at Whistling Straits. The pair will take on the European team of Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia. Bryson DeChambeau, Harris English, Scottie Scheffler, and Tony Finau will all sit out the first session for the Americans. The format of the first session is foursomes, also known as alternate shot. Europe has won four of the past five Ryder Cups and needs 14 points to retain the title. The Americans need 14-and-a-half points to win the Ryder Cup.
- NASCAR’s best are looking to hit the jackpot on Sunday. NASCAR’S Cup Series rolls into Las Vegas for the South Point 400. Kyle Larson starts on the pole after winning last week’s race. Ryan Blaney will join Larson up front. William Byron, Martin Truex Jr., and Kevin Harvick will round out the top five of the starting grid.
