HARRIS NAMED NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
Murray State’s Alexa Harris is the OVC Volleyball Newcomer of the Week for the week. Harris had a breakout weekend for the Racers, leading their offensive attack at the Dunn Hospitality Invitational, averaging 4.67 kills per set on a .310 hitting efficiency. She set a career-high in the sweep over Cleveland State with 12 kills on a .259 hitting percentage before upping it to 16 kills and a .355 hitting percentage the following day against Evansville. She is the seventh OVC Player of the Week recipient in 2021 for the Racers. Racers will host Eastern Illinois in their home opener at Racer Arena at 6 pm Friday and 2 pm Saturday.

CARDINALS WIN NINTH STRAIGHT
Jon Lester secured his 200th career win as the red-hot Cardinals defeated the Brewers 5-2 in Milwaukee. Lester allowed three-runs on three hits over six-frames for St. Louis, which won its ninth straight. Nolan Arenado homered and Yadier Molina drove in two in the victory. Luis García posted his first save. Game two of the four game series is on the air at 5:45 tonight on WNBS AM and FM.

VANDY’S DAVIS IS DONE FOR THE SEASON
Vanderbilt running back Re’Mahn Davis posted on Instagram that he is done for the season as he needs surgery. Davis was injured in the second quarter of Vanderbilt’s loss to Stanford and was seen in a walking boot in the second half. Davis, a transfer from Temple, rushed for 211 yards and a touchdown in the Commodores’ first three games.

MTSU QB QUITS
Middle Tennessee State lost a quarterback for the season, but not due to injury. Quarterback Bailey Hockman told MTSU head coach Rick Stockstill that he was done playing football on Sunday. Hockman was pulled in the first half of the Blue Raiders 27-13 loss to UTSA on Saturday after he completed 5-of-12 passes for 41 yards and an interception. Hockman transferred to MTSU this offseason after two seasons at NC State.

OVC COACH’S 12-YEAR OLD SON GETS SCHOLARSHIP OFFER
A Tennessee sixth grader who threw a 40-yard touchdown pass is receving an offer to play for Oregon. Graham Simpson, who is 12-years-old, went viral after his brother Ty shared Graham’s highlights in a tweet. Ty, who is an Alabama commit, tagged his school, but it was Oregon’s offensive coordinator Joe Moorehead who quickly took action and offered Graham a scholarship. Graham and Ty are the sons of UT Martin head football coach Jason Simpson.

MINOR LEAGUE ROUNDUP
The Redbirds are on the road tonight to start a series with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. Memphis has not named a starter for Game One. The Louisville Bats begin a five-game home series with the Toledo Mud Hens tomorrow afternoon.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
Aaron Jones rushed for a touchdown and caught three more as the Packers blasted the Lions 35-17 on Monday Night Football in Green Bay. Aaron Rodgers threw for 255 yards and four touchdowns for the Packers. Green Bay improves to 1-and-1. Jared Goff threw for 246 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception for the Lions. T.J. Hockenson and Quintez Cephus caught touchdowns for Detroit, which fell to 0-and-2.

The Los Angeles Lakers are making history with their latest jersey patch sponsorship deal. The LA Times reports the Lakers have agreed to a five-year agreement worth more than 100-million dollars with Korean foodmaker Bibigo. That number is huge, considering NBA teams have sold their patch ads for an average of 7-to-10 million dollars per year, according to the Athletic.

The Houston Texans won’t be activating Deshaun Watson despite losing their starting quarterback to injury. The NFL Network reports Tyrod Taylor will be “out for a while” after injuring his hamstring in Sunday’s 31-21 loss to the Cleveland Browns. Taylor is expected to miss Houston’s game on Thursday against the Carolina Panthers and could be placed on injured reserve this week. Head coach David Culley made it clear the team won’t play Watson and will turn to rookie Davis Mills should Taylor be sidelined.

The Colts are unsure of the status of Carson Wentz. The Indianapolis quarterback has sprains in both of his ankles according to head coach Frank Reich. Wentz left Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams with about eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The team is waiting for Wentz to meet with members of the medical staff before determining his official status. The Colts visit the Titans on Sunday. Jacob Eason will start if Wentz is unable to go.

Salvador Perez is etching his name in MLB history. Perez hit his 46th home run of the season in the Kansas City Royals’ 7-2 win over the Cleveland Indians, setting the new MLB record for home runs by a catcher in a single season. The previous record was held by Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench, who hit 45 home runs in 1970. Perez’s record-breaking blast was a two-run homer in the fifth inning against Cleveland. He’s now tied for the MLB lead in homers this season, while leading the majors with 115 RBI.
