Murray State’s Alma Garcia is the Ohio Valley Conference Women’s Co-Golfer of the Week. Playing in her first event for Murray State at the Missouri State Payne Stewart Memorial, she shot a 220 and produced an 11th place finish in a field of 84 players. Garcia shared the award with Olivia Hensley of Morehead State.

RACER FOOTBALL TRAVELS TO BOWLING GREEN
For a second consecutive week, Murray State football will travel to the Buckeye State to face an FBS opponent when they battle Bowling Green at Doyt Perry Stadium in a 4 pm game. Bowling Green has enters Saturday at 0-2 with losses to Tennessee and South Alabama. Racer head coach Dean Hood knows it will be another stiff test for his team against a team with FBS level talent and scholarships. A win over the Falcons would give the Racers their first victory over an FBS team since defeating Louisville in 1984. Airtime for the game is set for 3:30 Saturday afternoon on Froggy 103.7.

CATS LAND LIVINGSTON
Another five-star recruit is heading to Lexington. Five-star forward Chris Livingston committed to Kentucky on Wednesday over offers from Georgetown and Tennessee State. Livingston is the third five-star prospect to commit to Kentucky, joining shooting guard Shaedon Sharpe and guard Skyy Clark. The Wildcats now have the top-rated 2022 class in the county on ESPN’s recruiting database.

CARDINALS CONTINUE WINNING STREAK BY SWEEPING METS
Harrison Bader, Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado, and Edmundo Sosa all hit home runs as the Cardinals powered past the Mets 11-4 at Citi Field. Jon Lester improved to 6-and-6 after giving up three-runs, two earned, over six innings for St. Louis, which won its fifth straight. The Cards remain in sole possession of the National League’s second Wild Card spot. The Cardinals have a day off before hosting the Padres tomorrow night.

MINOR LEAGUE ROUNDUP
In Minor League baseball last night, the Memphis Redbirds beat the Bats 12-3 in Memphis, while the Nashville Sounds game at Gwinnett was rained out.

WAVERLY TO PLAY AT NISSAN STADIUM TONIGHT
Nashville’s NFL stadium will be the home of a Middle Tennessee high school football team tonight. The Waverly Central High School Tigers will host White House High School at Nissan Stadium. Waverly Central’s field was destroyed in last month’s deadly flooding in Humphreys County. The Tennessee Titans will also raise money for Waverly Central during the game.

CHURCHILL DOWNS HONORING ASHER
Churchill Downs is honoring its late spokesman. The track will unveil a statue of John Asher during a public ceremony at Churchill Downs this morning. During his 40 years as the voice and face of the famed track and while doing radio broadcasting in the state Asher became known as Mr. Kentucky Derby. Asher died suddenly in August of 2018 while on vacation in Florida.

VOLS FANS TOLD TO STAY HOME IF SICK
UT is telling Volunteers fans not to come to Saturday’s game at Neyland Stadium if they’re not feeling well or if they’ve been exposed to COVID-19. The school is asking fans to do a self-health check prior to coming to the game. Masks are encouraged but not required at Neyland Stadium and there’s no capacity restrictions at the over 100-thousand seat facility. The Vols will face Tennessee Tech at Noon Eastern Time.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
It’s time to turn the page and open a new chapter of the 2021 NFL season. Week Two is upon us and the Giants and Washington will kick things off in Landover tonight. Daniel Jones and the Giants are looking to rebound from a tough Week One loss at home to the Broncos while Washington is looking to put its loss to the Chargers in the rearview mirror. Elsewhere this week, Patrick Peterson makes his long awaited return to the desert when the Minnesota Vikings visit the red hot Arizona Cardinals. Also on Sunday, the Steelers host the Raiders and the Chiefs meet the Ravens on Sunday Night Football. On Monday, the Packers and Lions will both compete for their first win of the season

Some top Olympian gymnasts are demanding accountability in the Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal. He’s the former USA Gymnastics team doctor who was convicted of abusing scores of young female athletes over many years. Gold medalist Simone Biles told a Senate hearing there’s a “crisis of abuse in amateur sports.” Gold medalist McKayla Maroney said Nassar was “more of a pedophile” than a doctor. She also called him a “predator.” She grew angry and accused FBI investigators of making false claims about what she told them. Maroney testified the FBI is guilty of “fabricating a narrative” about Nassar that was designed to protect him.

The Milwaukee Bucks are making history. The team announced Wednesday they hired Lisa Byington as the play-by-play announcer for their TV broadcasts on Bally Sports Wisconsin. Per the Bucks, this makes Byington the first full-time female play-by-play announcer for a major American men’s sports team. Byington has worked as a reporter and announcer for multiple major sports broadcasts, including Fox Sports, ESPN, CBS, Turner Sports and the Big Ten and SEC Networks. And the Bucks say she’s broken barriers before. The team noted she was the first female play-by-play announcer for a Big Ten Network football broadcast back in 2017.

The hits keep coming for the Dallas Cowboys. ESPN reports defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence broke his foot during practice on Wednesday and is expected to miss six-to-eight weeks. The two-time Pro Bowler was set to play a large role in Dallas’ defense after missing most of training camp due to an offseason back surgery. The Cowboys might also be without Randy Gregory this weekend as he was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 List on Monday. The pass rush duo combined for 10 sacks last season.

Urban Meyer is taking himself out of the USC head coach conversation. The Jacksonville Jaguars head coach told reporters Wednesday there was “no chance” he would leave Jacksonville to take the job at Southern California. Meyer had a decorated collegiate coaching career, leading his teams to three national championships and compiling a 187-and-32 record. He said he’s committed to “try and build an organization” and mentioned that he doesn’t miss recruiting.
