RACERS CLAIM OVC SOCCER HONORS
Following their two victories over the weekend, Murray State soccer’s Audrey Henry was named OVC Defender of the Week and Jenna Villacres was named OVC Goalkeeper of the Week. Henry scored a goal against Florida International and played a pivotal role in a Racer defense that allowed just one goal on the week. Villacres posted a shutout against Florida Atlantic and had a season high 10 saves in the win over Florida International.

RACER VOLLEYBALL DUO HONORED BY OVC
Murray State’s Becca Fernandez is the OVC Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week and Brooke Lynn Watts is the OVC Newcomer of the Week. Fernandez compiled 71 digs in Murray State’s three matches last weekend and was named to the Billiken Invitational All-Tournament Team. Watts averaged 6.36 kills per set in Murray State’s three sets at the Billiken Invitational.

SHARPE CHOOSES KENTUCKY
One of the nation’s top-ranked high school basketball players will play for Kentucky. Guard Shaedon Sharpe announced his commitment to the Wildcats last night. ESPN, the Rivals Network, and others rank Sharpe as the top player in the country for the class of 2022.

COACH CAL ADDRESSES COVID CASE
University of Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari says he had COVID over the summer. He is vaccinated, but still tested positive. Calipari made the announcement today, saying he wants to encourage others to get vaccines. He says his symptoms were mild since he’s vaccinated.

CARDINALS LOSE, PUJOLS HOMERS IN DODGER BLUE
The Cardinals were stymied by the Dodgers again in a 7-2 loss at Busch Stadium last night. J.A. Happ fell to 8-and-8 after giving up four-runs over five innings. Nolan Arenado drove in both runs for St. Louis, which dropped its fourth straight. Now wearing Dodger blue, Albert Pujols homered in his first at-bat as a visiting National League player at Busch Stadium. The teams meet again tonight, with airtime set for 5:50 on WNBS AM and FM.

WAINO TO PITCH IN 2022
Longtime Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright is planning to play next season. The right-hander announced the decision yesterday in a video on his charity’s website. With his Cardinals’ contract set to expire at the end of this season, it is unknown where he might be pitching. The Brunswick, Georgia, native has pitched for St. Louis his entire 16-year career. The three-time All-Star was part of the 2006 World Series champion squad. Wainwright is 14-and-7 with a 2.91 ERA this season.

AREA MINOR LEAGUE REPORT
In minor league games last night, the Memphis Redbirds fell to the Sounds 9-7 in Nashville, while the Louisville Bats lost to the Indianapolis Indians 11-4 in Louisville. Both series continue tonight.

TITANS REPORT
Jon Robinson and company continue to stay busy. Tennessee made some roster moves yesterday. The Titans moved safety Brady Breeze from the injured list to the COVID-19 list and released offensive lineman Derwin Gray from the practice squad. Tennessee also waived safety Bradley McDougald, but added him to the practice squad, along with offensive lineman Corey Levin and defensive back Chris Jones. Quarterback Matt Barkley and tight end MyCole Pruitt were also put on the practice squad. The Titans host the Cardinals this Sunday.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
Four players are joining baseball’s all-time greats as they are inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame today. Derek Jeter, Larry Walker, Ted Simmons and the late Marvin Miller will cement their legacy in major league baseball history during the ceremony which takes place in Cooperstown, New York. All four are members of the Class of 2020, which had its induction postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. No one was elected for the Class of 2021 as pitcher Curt Schilling came up just short of the needed votes. The ceremony will be exclusively televised on the MLB Network and takes place at 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time. Joey Votto, Bernie Williams, Tim McCarver, Johnny Bench, Dante Bichette and Keith Hernandez are among those slated speak on the players’ Hall of Fame careers during the induction.

Gonzaga men’s basketball coach Mark Few is facing a DUI citation in Idaho. That’s according to a police report obtained by The Spokesman-Review. Few was reportedly pulled over around 8 p.m. Monday night north of Coeur d’Alene. Police had gotten a report that Few was speeding and driving erratically. The results of blood alcohol content samples were reportedly close to point-one-two, above the point-oh-eight legal limit. The school’s athletic department acknowledged the situation, but did not comment further. Few has been the head coach at Gonzaga since 1999 and has built the program to be one of the best in the country the last two decades.

Week One of the college football season is in the books and the new Coaches Poll Top 25 is out. The SEC has three teams in the top five, with Alabama at number one, Georgia at number two after it’s 10-3 win over Clemson and Texas A&M at number five. Clemson dropped down to six after its loss to Georgia, North Carolina and Miami fell to 22 and 24, respectively, while Virginia Tech was the only new ACC team in the rankings at number 21. The SEC also had five teams total in the poll with Florida at nine and Ole Miss at 20, which was tied with the Pac-12 that had Oregon at 11, USC at 14, UCLA at 16, Utah at 18 and Arizona State at number 25.

The football world is mourning the loss of Sam “Bam” Cunningham. The former USC and New England Patriots fullback passed away according to his alma mater. He was 71. Cunningham was the MVP of the 1973 Rose Bowl and was selected 11th overall in that year’s draft by the New England Patriots. He was inducted into the USC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Patriots Hall of Fame in 2010. Cunningham was also the brother of former NFL quarterback Randall Cunningham.

Le’Veon Bell is now with his former team’s biggest rival. The Baltimore Ravens signed the running back to their practice squad on Tuesday. ESPN is reporting that Bell will likely get moved to the 53-man roster soon. This comes after Baltimore recently lost starting running back J.K. Dobbins and third-string running back Justice Hill to season-ending injuries. Bell played for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2013 to 2018 where he rushed for over 1,000 yards in three seasons and made the Pro Bowl three times. He missed his final season with Pittsburgh due to a contract dispute and rushed for just 328 yards last season with the Jets and Chiefs.

The US Open continues as the best tennis players in the world compete in New York. On the men’s side, 18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz had his run to the Quarterfinals cut short due to an injury. He was ousted by 12th-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime after retiring in the second set. Number-2 seed Daniil Medvedev also advanced with his four-set win over Botic van de Zandschulp. On the women’s side, 19-year-old Leylah Fernandez beat fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina in three-sets to continue her unexpected string of upset victories. She’s the youngest woman to advance to the US Open Semifinals since Maria Sharapova in 2005. Number-two seed Aryna Sabalenka blew past Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets to secure her spot in the Semis.
