OLE MISS DOWNS LOUISVILLE
The Ole Miss offense had no trouble moving the ball in a 43-24 win over Louisville last night in Atlanta. Malik Cunningham threw one touchdown pass and had one pick while rushing for two Cardinal scores. Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin was not at the game in-person because he recently tested positive for COVID-19. Louisville hosts Eastern Kentucky on Saturday.

RICE’S BIG NIGHT EARNS OVC WEEKLY HONOR
Murray State quarterback Preston Rice is the OVC Offensive Player of the Week. Rice became just the 11th Racer in school history to score four rushing touchdowns in one game in last week’s 35-0 season-opening win over Mississippi Valley State. The redshirt junior rushed 11 times for 81 yards and was also 10-for-16 passing for 148 yards with only one interception. Rice’s first score was from 38 yards out in the first quarter and he followed that with touchdown rushes of one yard, five yards, and one yard, respectively. Cardinal hitters were silenced by Dodgers’ ace Max Scherzer in a 5-1 Labor Day loss at Busch Stadium. Sherzer struck out 13 batters and allowed only one unearned run over eight innings. St. Louis’ lone run came on a passed ball in the sixth inning. Miles Mikolas suffered the defeat. The Cards have dropped three straight and will host the Dodgers again tonight with a 5:50 airtime on WNBS AM and FM.

TITANS PREP FOR OPENER
The Tennessee Titans are preparing for their season opener. The Titans will face the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday afternoon at Nissan Stadium. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill practiced with the team yesterday after being activated off the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Saturday. He had been on the list since August 26th.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
The US Open continues as the best tennis players in the world compete in New York. On the men’s side, top-seeded Novak Djokovic overcame a rough first set to take down American Jenson Brooksby in four sets. Number-4 seed Alexander Zverev cruised to the Quarterfinals with a straight-set win over Jannik Sinner. Number-22 seed Reilly Opelka was eliminated in a four-set loss, leaving no Americans left in the tournament. On the women’s side, Shelby Rogers was upset in a straight-set loss to 18-year-old Emma Raducanu. Number-4 seed Karolina Pliskova and Number-11 seed Belinda Bencic each advanced to the Quarterfinals with two-set victories.

The UConn Huskies are looking for a new head football coach. One day after announcing his retirement at the end of the season, Randy Edsall has come to a mutual decision with the university to step aside immediately. Defensive coordinator Lou Spanos has been named interim head coach for the remainder of the season. It’s the end of Edsall’s second stint as Huskies head coach after he led the program from Division I-AA to the FBS in his first go-around. Edsall concludes his career 76-and-95 with Connecticut.

The Houston Texans will have a new starting quarterback for the team’s season opener this weekend. Houston head coach David Culley officially announced Tyrod Taylor as the team’s starter against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Taylor takes the place of Deshaun Watson, who remains on the team’s roster despite a trade request and 22 pending civil lawsuits against him. The Texans will roll with 32-year-old Taylor and have rookie Davis Mills serve as his backup. Taylor was named the starter for the Los Angeles Chargers last season, but suffered a punctured lung after Week One and went on to lose his starting position.

The Baltimore Ravens are pulling out their checkbooks to keep an important part of their offense. The NFL Network reports Baltimore is signing tight end Mark Andrews to a four-year extension worth 56-million dollars. Andrews, who made the Pro Bowl in 2019, had 58 receptions, 701 yards and seven touchdowns last season with the Ravens. With the deal, the 26-year-old will make the most money of any NFL tight end during those four seasons.

Georgia football head coach Kirby Smart is very concerned over the state of his program and COVID-19. Smart spoke to reporters and disclosed that some unnamed players are currently shelved with COVID-19. Smart says the cases come on the heels of some staff members testing positive and the individuals involved have indeed been vaccinated. The head coach says the program is at its “highest spike” dealing with the virus. Smart had previously said that over 90-percent of the coaches, players, and staff have been vaccinated already.
