Kentucky Crews Headed To Louisiana, Helping Restore Power

Crews from Kentucky are headed to Louisiana to help restore power to areas hit hard by Hurricane Ida.  Emergency Disaster Services Director Matt Daley says hundreds of line members are deploying to New Orleans out of Maysville.  Daley says they’ll be on the ground helping to restore power within 24 hours.  Lineman will also provide food, supplies, and help to those impacted.

Senate Minority Leader: Afghanistan Far Worse Than Saigon

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says the withdrawal from Afghanistan is far worse than Saigon in the Vietnam War.  Speaking on Fox News Sunday, the Kentucky Republican said when the U.S. left Saigon there wasn’t concern of terrorist groups plotting against the United States like in Afghanistan.  Senator McConnell said the Taliban doesn’t care about what others say about them and will operate however it pleases if no one stands in their way.  He added just because the U.S. decided to pull out of the Middle Eastern country doesn’t mean the terrorists will stop plotting against America.

Conservation officers investigate suspected drowning at Lake Barkley Marina

Conservation officers with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources responded shortly after 5 p.m. (CDT) Saturday to Lake Barkley Marina in Trigg County for a report of a man who fell into the water and had not resurfaced.

Once officers arrived on scene, it was determined that a woman had fallen into the water while attempting to dock the pontoon boat at Dock 1. Ralph Willis, 67, of Utica, Kentucky jumped in and helped the woman onto the dock but then went under and did not resurface.

Trigg County Rescue Squad personnel and local rescue divers assisted conservation officers at the scene. The victim’s body was recovered near the dock at 7:55 p.m. He was not wearing a life jacket.

Saturday’s accident marks the 14th water-related death in the Law Enforcement Division’s First Region this year.

FEMA Strike Teams in Kentucky 

Gov. Andy Beshear said three Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) strike teams he requested arrived in Kentucky THIS WEEKEND to assist the commonwealth with record COVID-19 cases.

The teams will serve as backup for local ambulance services and perform patient transfers from one hospital to another.

MCCH Employee of the Month

Murray-Calloway County Hospital recently named Sarah Lindley as the July 2021 Employee of the Month. Lindley is a Certified Respiratory Therapist in the Cardiopulmonary and Respiratory Department. She has served twelve years at MCCH.

Owensboro Hospital Takes Patients After Power Outage At Leitchfield Facility

(Owensboro, KY)  —  Owensboro Health officials say they’ve relocated patients from their Leitchfield facility after a power outage there.  Officials say 22 patients were successfully transferred Saturday to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital in Owensboro.  The health system says the Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center completely lost power early Saturday morning.  Staff from that facility traveled to Owensboro with their patients and are continuing to care for them.

Eleven Henderson County Detention Center Inmates Positive For COVID-19

(Henderson, KY)  —  Officials with the Henderson County Detention Center say eleven inmates have tested positive for COVID-19.  Jailer Amy Brady says the affected inmates are isolated in six separate quarantine cells.  Brady says two other cells are on COVID-19 protocol as a precaution.  Officials say the county Health Department is in the facility offering the vaccine to any inmates who want it.

Historic Powell County Building Heavily Damaged By Fire

(Clay City, KY)  —  A historic Powell County building is heavily damaged after a large fire.  Officials say the blaze broke out on Main Street at the Clay City building early yesterday morning.  The building is over a century old and once housed the Clay City Restaurant.  No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Four Danville Apartments Seriously Damaged By Fire

(Danville, KY)  —  Four Danville, Kentucky apartments are seriously damaged after a weekend fire.  Firefighters say the apartments are located in a building on Balasa Drive, near Stanford Road, where the blaze broke out Saturday.  No injuries were reported, but the occupants of the damaged apartments have to stay elsewhere.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

117th Kentucky State Fair Wraps Up

(Louisville, KY)  —  The 117th Kentucky State Fair is over.  Yesterday wrapped up eleven days of Kentucky’s summertime celebration at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville.  New records were set during a pair of popular events with an over one-thousand-and-60-pound pumpkin and the Grand Champion Ham selling for nearly five-million dollars during the 47th Kentucky Farm Bureau Country Ham Breakfast.  An estimated 600-thousand visitors are expected to have a 15-million-dollar economic impact.

Lexington Pastor Mourned After Passing From COVID

(Lexington, KY)  —  A beloved Lexington church pastor is being mourned.  Pastor Tim Parsons of Center Point Church died on Thursday, more than two weeks after testing positive for COVID-19.  Center Point says Pastor Parsons leaves behind an impactful legacy on the lives of thousands of people.  Associate Pastor Graham Withers said Parsons is in the presence of the Savior he loved so deeply and proclaimed so passionately.

GRDHD Updates Coronavirus Numbers

(Owensboro, KY)  —  The Green River District Health Department is reporting a rise in coronavirus cases.  On Friday, the GRDHD reported 749 additional confirmed cases with 278 in Daviess County, 147 in Henderson County, 119 in Ohio County, 80 in Union County, 57 in Webster County, 42 in McLean County, and 26 in Hancock County.  There have been over 28-thousand-500 cases in the seven-county District since the outbreak began.  There have been nearly 450 COVID-19-related deaths in the district since the outbreak began.

 

FBI Offers Reward In Crystal Rogers Case

(Louisville, KY)  —  The FBI in Louisville is offering a reward for information in the disappearance of Crystal Rogers.  On Saturday, the FBI announced a 25-thousand-dollar reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for her disappearance in July of 2015.  The FBI made the announcement a day after saying it had found an “item of interest” while digging up the driveway at a Bardstown home owned by the only person ever suspected in Rogers’ disappearance, her boyfriend Brooks Houck.

Louisville Records 19th Straight Month Of Double-Digit Homicides

(Louisville, KY)  —  Louisville is on a record pace for homicides this year.  In 2020, there were a total of 173 homicides and 587 people wounded in shootings.  As of Saturday, there had been 135 homicides and 428 people wounded by gunfire.  That includes at least 20 homicides this month, marking the 19th consecutive month of double-digit homicides in Louisville.

Parts Of Tennessee Under Flood Watch Due To Hurricane Ida

(Undated)  —  Hurricane Ida could have a big impact on Tennessee.  The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for dozens of Tennessee counties.  Humphreys, Hickman, Houston and Dickson counties in Middle Tennessee are among them.  Those counties are still recovering from historic flooding earlier this month that claimed the lives of 20 people.

Soldier Killed In Afghanistan Was From East Tennessee

(Undated)  —  An American soldier killed in a terrorist attack in Afghanistan is a Tennessean.  Army Staff Sergeant Ryan Knauss [[ Kuh-nows ]] was one of 13 U.S. military members killed in an attack by an Islamic extremist group last week.  Knauss graduated from Gibbs High School in Knoxville.  Staff Sergeant Knauss was 23.

Tennessee Company Makes Donation To Help Mid-State Flood Victims

(Brentwood, TN)  —  A Tennessee-based company is supporting victims of historic flooding in Middle Tennessee.  Tractor Supply Company has donated 25-thousand dollars to the American Red Cross of Tennessee.  The money will be used to help flood victims in Humphreys, Hickman, Houston and Dickson counties recover from deadly flooding earlier this month.  More than 17 inches of rain fell on the area on Saturday, August 21st leading to the deaths of 20 people.

TDOE Could Consider Allowing Schools To Transition To Online Instruction

(Nashville, TN)  —  The Tennessee Department of Education will consider allowing a class or school to temporarily transition to remote learning.  TDOE Commissioner Dr. Penny Schwinn made the announcement in a letter sent to school system leaders on Friday.  Dr. Schwinn said the waivers allowing for a transition from in-person learning will be considered if necessary to allow students affected at the classroom or school level by COVID-19 to continue instruction online.  Schwinn said the waivers aren’t for entire districts and will be applied “narrowly.”

Tennessee Task Force 2 Deployed To Louisiana

(Undated)  —  Tennessee Task Force Two is being deployed to Louisiana.  The Nashville Fire Department says the team will help with search and rescue efforts after Hurricane Ida made landfall in Louisiana yesterday.  Tennessee Task Force Two team members are from Nashville, Williamson County and Franklin.  The deployment is expected to last two weeks.

Flash Flood Watch Issued For Shelby Co.

(Memphis, TN)  —  Memphians are preparing for Hurricane Ida.  The storm is expected to drop three-to-six inches of rain on the Mid-South over the next two days.  Several West Tennessee counties are under weather advisories.  The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Shelby County for this morning through tomorrow night.

Members Of Tennessee National Guard Giving COVID Vaccines At Pipkin Building

(Memphis, TN)  —  Nearly 600 members of the Tennessee National Guard are helping support hospitals across the state.  They’re needed due to staffing shortages brought on by COVID-19.  Members of the Guard are also helping out at the Pipkin Building.  Last week, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland pleaded with Memphians to get their free vaccines at the site.

SCHD: Over 65% Of COVID Vaccination Goal Reached

(Memphis, TN)  —  The Shelby County Health Department says it’s more than 65 percent to its COVID-19 vaccination goal.  SCHD has a goal of vaccinating 700-thousand people.  The department reported yesterday that over 461-thousand-600 people have been vaccinated.  SCHD says 700-thousand are needed to reach herd immunity.

COGIC To Hold 2021 Holy Convocation Online

(Memphis, TN)  —  The 2021 Holy Convocation for the Memphis-based Church of God in Christ will be a virtual event.  COGIC leadership announced on Friday that this year’s event will be held online due to COVID concerns.  The church canceled last year’s convocation.  This year’s meetings are set for November 8th through the 15th.

Winning Powerball Ticket Sold In Memphis

(Memphis, TN)  —  It’s not yet known who bought a winning Powerball ticket in Memphis.  The ticket for Saturday night’s drawing is worth 100-thousand dollars.  It was sold at Crispy Food Mart on Riverdale Road, near State Line Road in southeast Memphis.  Since no one won the grand prize, the estimated total for tonight’s drawing 332-million dollars.

NWS: Ida Expected To Bring Heavy Rain To Mid-State

(Nashville, TN)  —  A Flash Flood Watch is being issued for most of Middle Tennessee.  The National Weather Service says Hurricane Ida will start dropping heavy rain west of I-65 tonight.  Forecasters say the rain will spread across the remainder of Middle Tennessee tomorrow before falling off later in the night.  Between two-to-five inches are expected to fall with severe weather possible.

Mid State Schools Closing Due To COVID-19

(Undated)  —  Multiple Mid-State school systems say they’re closing over coronavirus concerns.  The Coffee County School District, Warren County Schools, and Wilson County Schools are all closed this week.  All three districts say they expect to resume classes on Tuesday, September 7th.  The districts say the closures are a chance to slow the spread of the virus among students and staff.

High-Performance Cars Stolen From Murfreesboro Dealership

(Murfreesboro, TN)  —  Murfreesboro police are investigating the theft of cars and tags from a Dodge dealership.  The Challengers and Chargers were driven out of Beaman Dodge early Friday morning.  The car thieves got the keys and about two-dozen tags after disabling the security system.  Several vehicles were also stolen from a Knoxville dealership last week.

Hendersonville Restaurant Honoring U.S. Service Members Killed In Afghanistan

(Hendersonville, TN)  —  A Sumner County restaurant is honoring 13 members of the U.S. military killed in Afghanistan.  Suicide bombers and gunmen attacked crowds of Afghans trying to escape at the airport in the nation’s capitol last week.  A display of 13 cups of beer, an American flag, and a sign saying “reserved” is in a booth at the Texas Roadhouse in Hendersonville.  A Facebook post with a picture of the display has been shared thousands of times.
