More Titans players are landing on the COVID-19 List. Tennessee starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill was put on the list Thursday, along with tight end Geoff Swaim and linebacker Justin March-Lillard. Tannehill is vaccinated and Titans GM Jon Robinson said the quarterback was “feeling fine”. Tennessee head coach Mike Vrabel tested positive for the coronavirus on Sunday and said Thursday that he’s feeling good but has yet to produce a negative COVID-19 test. In total, the Titans have nine players and coaches currently in the COVID-19 protocol. The Titans backup quarterback competition could be settled this weekend. NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
It’s time to kick off the 2021 college football season. A limited slate of games will open Week One on Saturday. A Big Ten West battle will open things up when Nebraska visits Illinois. Elsewhere on the schedule Saturday, Fresno State will host UConn, UCLA plays host to Hawaii, UTEP visits New Mexico State, and Southern Utah is at San Jose State. The rest of college football will resume Week One starting September 1st.

The Pac-12 announced Thursday that it will not pursue expansion “at this time”. ESPN reports that the Pac-12’s expansion working group recognized the opportunity to have a presence in more markets, but the group came to the decision that the alliance would help the conference expand its brand. Choosing not to expand also means the conference schools would not have to split revenue with more programs.

NASCAR’s Cup Series will circle through a classic locale on Saturday. The Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway will take place with drivers looking to lock up a playoff spot in the regular-season finale. Kyle Larson will start in first and will be joined up front by teammate William Byron. Denny Hamlin will start third. Kyle Busch and Chase Elliott round out the top five.

The front nine yielded plenty of birdies for the three leaders at the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland. Rory McIlroy, Sam Burns, and Jon Rahm each shot eight-under and tallied a combined 13 birdies on the opening nine holes on pace to each scoring a 64 in the second Fed Ex Cup playoffs on Thursday. Sergio Garcia is one off the pace at seven under.
