CARDINALS FALL TO TIGERS
The Cardinals late rally fell short in a 4-3 loss to the Tigers at Busch Stadium. Nolan Arenado doubled in a pair in a three-run eighth inning for St. Louis, which has dropped five of seven. Jack Flaherty was tagged with the loss after giving up four-runs over two innings and exiting early with shoulder tightness. The teams play again today with airtime set for 11:20 this morning on WNBS AM and FM.
YADI STAYING ANOTHER YEAR
Yadier Molina is staying in St. Louis for one more season. The veteran catcher has agreed to a one-year contract extension with the Cardinals that will keep him in St. Louis through 2022. The deal is reportedly worth ten-million-dollars.
LOUISVILLE MAY BENEFIT FROM ALLIANCE
The Louisville Cardinals may have some more exciting non-conference games in the future. The Big Ten, Pac-12, and ACC are releasing some details of their new alliance. It includes scheduling opportunities between the conferences for football in addition to men’s and women’s basketball. It’ll also explore opportunities for Olympic sports to play more often. The alliance came after Texas and Oklahoma announced a move to the SEC from the Big 12. The agreement will not take effect for several years.
TITANS REPORT
Julio Jones is back on the Titans practice field. The Tennessean reported that the former All-Pro receiver went through some light 11-on-11 work and worked on his technique with wide receivers coach Rod Moore. Jones last practiced on August 2nd when he left early after he fell awkwardly during practice. Tennessee placed linebacker Nick Dzubnar and running back Jeremy McNichols on the COVID-19 List. The Titans also waived cornerback Kevin Peterson.
AREA MINOR LEAGUE UPDATE
In area Minor League games, the Memphis Redbirds doubled up the Columbus Clippers 8-4 in Memphis, the Louisville Bats defeated the Indianapolis Indians 3-2 in Indiana, and the Nashville Sounds fell to Gwinnett 3-1 at home.
VANDY FOOTBALL 95% VACCINATED
The Vanderbilt Commodores are doing everything possible to get games in this year. Vandy head coach Clark Lea said the football team is “north of 95%” vaccinated. The University has a COVID-19 vaccination requirement for all students, faculty and staff, which includes coaches, athletes and support staff.
NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
The defending NBA Champions are rewarding their head coach. The Bucks announced they are giving head coach Mike Budenholzer with a three-year contract extension. Budenholzer’s deal was set to expire at the end of the upcoming season but he will now have a deal through the 2024-25 season. The head coach helped guide Milwaukee to its first championship in 50 years this past season.
Louisiana State University is requiring proof of vaccination against COVID-19 to get into football games at Tiger Stadium this fall. LSU announced guests 12 and older will need to be vaccinated or provide a negative coronavirus test taken within 72 hours before the game. The policy begins with the first home game on September 11th against McNeese State. LSU is the first SEC school to require vaccination to attend football games.
One of the Jaguars’ best offensive weapons won’t be on the field this season. ESPN is reporting that Jacksonville Jaguars rookie running back Travis Etienne has been put on injured reserve Tuesday for a Lisfranc injury. Etienne will undergo surgery for his foot injury and will be out for the entire season. The rookie running back suffered the injury to his left foot in Monday’s preseason game against the New Orleans Saints.
A possible run for U.S. Senate is closer to reality for former star NFL player Herschel Walker. The AJC reports the former Georgia Bulldog registered to vote last week using the Atlanta-area address of his wife’s home after he had been living in Texas for years. Former President Trump urged Walker to run for Senate on the Republican ticket after the fall elections last year. Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black has already launched his campaign as Republicans look to unseat Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock next year.
The 2021 Preseason Coaches All-SEC Football Team was released yesterday, and Alabama had a league-leading 15 representatives. Wide receiver John Metchie II, offensive lineman Evan Neal, defensive lineman Phidarian Mathis, linebackers Christian Harris and Will Anderson Jr., and defensive backs Malachi Moore and Josh Jobe were named to the first-team. Tight end Jahleel Billingsley, offensive lineman Emil Ekiyor Jr., linebacker Henry To’o To’o, and defensive back Jordan Battle were named to the second-team. Running back Brian Robinson Jr., defensive lineman LaBryan Ray, linebacker Christopher Allen, and kicker will Reichard were named to the third-team.
