WALDROP NAMED CALLOWAY GIRLS HEAD BASKETBALL COACH
Maddie Waldrop was introduced Friday as the new girls’ head basketball coach at Calloway County High School, replacing Valerie Waller, who resigned this summer after six seasons with the Lady Lakers. Waldrop was a standout for four seasons at UT Martin and was a two-time All-OVC selection. While playing at Murray High school, she was a two-time All-State selection, four-time All-Purchase selection, the 2014 Paducah Sun Player of the Year, the 2016 WPSD Athlete of the Year, and the 2017 First Region MVP.

Symone Cooper scored two second half goals to lead Murray State Soccer to a 3-2 home win over Louisiana Tech yesterday at Cutchin Field. After going down two goals to none, the Racers Lauren Payne had a penalty kick goal in the 40th minute, setting the stage for Cooper’s heroics, as Murray State improved to 2-0 on the season. The Racers will be back in action Sunday with a noon match at Xavier.

CARDINALS BLANK PIRATES
Adam Wainwright threw eight shutout innings as the Cardinals avoided the sweep by the Pirates with a 3-0 win at Busch Stadium. The right-hander picked up his 12th win by striking out nine and allowing just two hits. Alex Reyes nailed down his 28th save of the year. Paul Goldschmidt homered as St. Louis snapped a two-game losing streak. The Cards have a day off and host the Tigers tomorrow night.
KIM ACTIVATED AS RELIEVER
Cardinals starter Kwang Hyun Kim is now a reliever. The club activated the left-hander yesterday and placed him in the bullpen rather than back into the rotation. Manager Mike Shildt said that Kim likely would have required another Minor League rehab stint if he wanted to build himself up enough to be a starter once again. Also, his spot in the rotation was in question with the return of Jack Flaherty and Miles Mikolas from injury. Kim is 6-and-6 with a 3.36 ERA this season.
VRABEL TESTS POSITIVE FOR COVID 19
Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel announced that he has tested positive for COVID-19. Vrabel said he woke up Sunday morning with a sore throat and an earache and tested positive for the virus upon arrival at the team’s facility. Vrabel is fully vaccinated and currently in quarantine. Vrabel can return after two negative tests in a 48-hour period, or a ten-day quarantine. The Titans take on the Chicago Bears in their preseason finale on Saturday. The Titans put together a 34-3 preseason win over the Buccaneers in Tampa on Saturday.
MINOR LEAGUE ROUNDUP
In area minor league action, the Memphis Redbirds had a great offensive showing but still lost 13-12 to Nashville in Memphis, and the Louisville Bats beat the Gwinnett Stripers 5-3 yesterday in Louisville.
CATCHINGS INDUCTED INTO WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME
Former Tennessee Vol Tamika Catchings is a hall of famer. Catchings was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville on Saturday night. Catchings played for legendary coach Pat Summit at UT from 1997 to 2001. The Lady Vols went unbeaten and won the national title in 1998.
NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera is the 28th player in MLB history to hit 500 career home runs. Cabrera reached the milestone in the top of the sixth inning off of Toronto’s Steven Matz on Sunday. The 2012 Triple Crown winner is also now 46 hits away from reaching three-thousand for his career.
Hockey Hall of Famer Rod Gilbert has died. He was 80. “Mr. Ranger” is the franchise’s all-time leader in goals with 406 and points with 1,021 and became the first player in the NHL to have his number retired at Madison Square Garden. Gilbert played his entire 18-year career with the New York Rangers and made an appearance in the 1972 Stanley Cup Final. He also played in eight All-Star Games.
Ryan Blaney’s number 12 car was the first to cross the finish line in the Fire Keepers Casino 400 at the Michigan International Speedway. Blaney started the race in the three spot but was able to get first place. Kyle Larson, who started in the first spot, finished in third and William Byron came in second place. Kurt Busch finished fourth and Denny Hamlin rounded out the top five. The NASCAR Cup Series moves to Daytona on Saturday.
Hurricane Henri is starting to have ramifications on the sports world. The storm caused a pre-emptive delay in the Northern Trust golf tournament, postponing Sunday’s fourth and final round to Monday. Cameron Smith and Jon Rahm are tied for the lead after three rounds at 16-under, with Erik van Rooyen one shot off the pace. PGA Tour officials said Saturday they will explore the possibility of extending play into Tuesday, if necessary.
