CARDS DOWN PIRATES BEHIND WAINO GEM
Adam Wainwright’s complete game, two-hit, shutout pushed the Cardinals to a 4-0 win over the Pirates in Pittsburgh. Wainwright also did well at the plate with two hits and an RBI. Paul DeJong drove in a pair for St. Louis, which goes for the sweep today,with airtime set for 10:40 this morning on WNBS AM and FM.

LAKER BOYS SOCCER OPENS VS MUSTANGS
The Calloway County boys soccer team opens the season tonight at 7 with a home game against McCracken County. The Lakers started last season 4-1 before going winless in their last five matches to finish the season with a record of 4-5-1.

RACER SOCCER HOSTS BULLDOGS
The Murray State soccer team wraps up exhibition play when they host Samford today at 1. The Racers’ friendly at Evansville was wiped out due to weather on Tuesday. The Racers open the regular season a week from today with a home match against Missouri State.

TITANS INK TWO, CUT ONE
The Tennessee Titans have added two players to its roster. The Titans signed safety Tedric Thompson and tight end Gabe Holmes. Thompson spent last season with the Chiefs and Browns while Holmes bounced around and spent some time in the XFL in 2020. Tennessee waived injured tight end Donnie Ernsberger to open up a roster spot.

GRIZZLIES LOSE TO HEAT IN SUMMER LEAGUE GAME
Ziaire Williams flashed his potential in the Grizzlies loss to the Heat in Summer League action. Williams scored 19 points in Memphis’ 97-94 double overtime loss to Miami. Sean McDermott also had 19 and Desmond Bane scored 16 points. The Grizzlies play Sacramento tomorrow.

MAJORS TO BE HONORED WITH VOLS VS PITT SERIES
The Tennessee Vols football game against Pitt will be named after an important figure in the history of both programs. When Tennessee hosts Pitt on September 11th, it will be called the Johnny Majors Classic. The two teams will meet in non-conference play in 2022 as well, and that matchup will also be a part of the Johnny Majors Classic. Majors was a legendary coach for both programs, winning a national championship with Pitt and three SEC championships with the Vols.

MINOR LEAGUE ROUNDUP
In area minor league games last night, the Memphis Redbirds were defeated by the Tides 7-5 in Norfolk, and the Louisville Bats lost to the Nashville Sounds 8-5 in Louisville. Those series continue tonight.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
A week after the NFL Hall of Fame Game cut the ribbon on the 2021 season, the rest of the league kicks off preseason week one starting tonight. On tap tonight, the New England Patriots welcome the Washington Football Team to town while the Philadelphia Eagles host the Pittsburgh Steelers. Highlights across the weekend include, top overall pick Trevor Lawrence making his debut as the Jacksonville Jaguars host the Cleveland Browns, the defending Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers entertain the Cincinnati Bengals, and Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs visit the San Francisco 49ers.

Anticipation is as high as the corn stalks for the MLB’s “Field of Dreams” game in Dyersville, Iowa, tonight. The White Sox and Yankees will collide in a game set to take place at a site where the iconic movie was filmed. Andrew Heaney gets the start for New York while Lance Lynn will take the mound for Chicago. The game was delayed to this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Corbin Burnes was serving up something special as the Brewers blasted the Cubs 10-0 in Chicago. Burnes struck out 15 batters, including 10 straight at one point, over eight innings. He tied the record for consecutive strikeouts, which was also completed by Aaron Nola in June and Tom Seaver back in 1970. The 15 strikeouts are a career high for Burnes.

Baylor University is being hit with NCCA infractions related to the school providing impermissible benefits to a football student-athlete. The student-athlete was allowed to play after he failed to meet an academic performance plan. The school also operated a female student-host program that did not meet the organization’s recruiting rules. The school’s illegal host group the “Baylor Bruins,” were at “the disposal of football players in a very inappropriate way.” The infractions include four years probation, a five-thousand dollar fine and future restrictions on recruiting.

The big names will be out in force as the PGA Tour makes its stop in Greensboro, North Carolina this week for the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club. Tokyo silver medalist Rory Sabbatini will be among the field as well as Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama and Charl Schwartzel as they vie for the title and more than six-million-dollars in prize money. Jim Herman will be looking to defend his title.
