WALLER RESIGNS AS LADY LAKERS BASKETBALL COACH
Calloway County High School girls head basketball coach Valerie Waller resigned on Friday to take a job in the Marshall County School system and her daughter, Skylar Waller has enrolled at Marshall County High School. She is an incoming freshman there where she has been attending classes. As an 8th grader, she was a multi-sport standout for the Lakers, averaging 18.9 points and 7.7 rebounds on the basketball court while also qualifying for the KHSAA State Golf Tournament. She will be immediately eligible at Marshall County.

OVC SUES EKU AND JSU
The Ohio Valley Conference has sued Eastern Kentucky and Jacksonville State, contending they have not paid $1 million exit fees after both schools left the league this year for the Atlantic Sun Conference. Eastern Kentucky and Jacksonville State joined the ASUN on July 1 after announcing their respective departures in January and February. The league says the schools have refused to pay exit fees agreed upon by conference members. The statement noted that exit fees are determined by the date of notice and added that both schools made them less than two years before they planned to leave.

CARDINALS FALL TO ROYALS
The Cardinals rally came up short in a 6-5 loss in the series finale against the Royals at Busch Stadium. St. Louis tied the game with three-runs in the eighth before a rain-delay stopped play for more than two-hours. KC then scored the game-winning run in top of ninth. Paul Goldschmidt and Dylan Carlson each drove in a pair and Alex Reyes was tagged with the loss for the Cards, who took two of three in the series. St. Louis visits the Pirates tomorrow night.

GRIZZLIES SIGN TWO DRAFT PICKS
The Memphis Grizzlies have officially added two more players. Memphis signed Ziaire Williams and Santi Aldama to rookie deals. The Grizzlies drafted Williams out of Stanford with the 10th overall pick and selected Aldama out of Loyola Maryland with the 30th pick.

AREA MINOR LEAGUE ROUNDUP
In area minor league games, the Memphis Redbirds lost to the Bulls 4-3 in Durham, the Louisville Bats battled to beat the Saints 4-3 in St. Paul, and the Nashville Sounds won a 4-2 home game against Toledo.

NASHVILLE FALLS TO MIAMI
Nashville SC lost to Inter Miami CF despite having a lead at one point in the match. Nashville SC lost 2-1 even though C.J. Sapong scored the first goal of the match early in the second half. Nashville has 28 points in the MLS standings.

MIZZOU HIRES FORMER UNLV AD
Desiree Reed-Francois is making history as The University of Missouri’s first female athletics director. She comes to Columbia after serving as AD at UNLV since 2017. Reed-Francois has more than 25 years of experience in intercollegiate athletics and was the first Hispanic female and woman of color athletics director at the FBS level. She will also be the first female athletic director in a public institution in the SEC.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
Team USA is leaving Tokyo with the most gold medals won and the most medals overall. Americans won a total of 39 gold medals and 113 total medals to lead both categories. China finished second with 88 total medals and 38 gold.

Peyton Manning and seven others are adding the famed golden jacket to their closets. Manning headlined the historic 2021 Pro Football Hall of Fame Class as two-time Super Bowl winning quarterback cemented his place in NFL history. Also entering the Hall were guard Alan Faneca, coach Tom Flores, receiver Calvin Johnson, safety John Lynch, contributor Bill Nunn, receiver Drew Pearson and safety Charles Woodson.

Legendary college football coach Bobby Bowden is dead. He was 91. The head coach revealed last month that he’d been diagnosed with terminal cancer. He’d already endured a battle with COVID-19 in October of 2020. Bowden coached Florida State for 34 years and was the second winningest coach in Division One history with 357 wins to his credit. Florida State won the National Championship in 1993 and 1999 with Bowden at the helm. FSU confirmed that Bowden passed away this morning surrounded by his wife Ann and all six of their children.

Video is surfacing of an racial incident from a member of the crowd at the game between the Marlins and Rockies in Denver on Sunday. While Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson was at the plate in the ninth inning, a fan could be heard shouting a racial slur at the outfielder. The alleged slur was loud enough to be heard during the broadcast of the game. After the game, several athletes and others took to social media to show support for Brinson.

The NASCAR Cup Series is back on the track and Kyle Larson is back in victory lane. Larson picked up his fifth win of the season as he won the Go Bowling at The Glen at Watkins Glen. The number five Chevrolet led 27 laps and was able to hold off teammate Chase Elliott, who made a late rally to finish second. Martin Truex Jr. finished third. Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin rounded out the top five.

Abraham Ancer is pulling off a victory at the WGC-FedEx Saint Jude Invitational, thanks to a birdie on the second playoff hole. He outdueled Sam Burns and Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama for the win at TPC Southwind in Memphis. Ancer shot a fourth-round 68 to finish in a three-way tie at 16-under to force the playoff. Harris English, who had led through three rounds, shot a three-over 73 Sunday to fall one back into second place.
