Kentucky Overdoses Up.
The Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet and Office of Drug Control Policy are releasing data from the 2020 Overdose Fatality Report. Data from the report showed over 19-hundred Kentuckians died from drug overdoses in 2020. The deaths represent a nearly 50-percent increase in drug overdose deaths over 2019. Data indicates that most of the death toll was driven by an increase in opioid abuse.
Murray Female Arrested
On Tuesday night Calloway County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a residence on Navigator Drive for a report of a fight in progress. Upon their arrival, deputies located a female actively engaged in a physical fight with two family members. The female then resisted arrest and assaulted a deputy when he was taking her into custody. Jamie C. McKinney, age 24, of Murray, Kentucky was arrested and charged with 3rd Degree Assault of a Peace Officer, two counts of 4th Degree Domestic Assault, and Resisting Arrest. She was lodged in the Calloway County Jail.
Kentucky State Senator Positive for Covid after Shots.
Kentucky State Senator Alice Forgy Kerr says the COVID-19 Delta variant is a “new ballgame.” The Senator posted on Facebook last night that she has tested positive for COVID despite being fully vaccinated. Forgy Kerr said three other family members who were fully vaccinated also tested positive recently. She asks people to be careful and continue to take precautions.
Cop in Taylor Case Wants Bail Back
The only detective charged in the deadly raid on Breonna Taylor’s home wants his bail money back. Brett Hankison’s lawyer filed a motion in a Jefferson Circuit Court yesterday asking that the cash bond of 15-thousand dollars be reduced to personal recognizance. Stew Mathews says Hankison is having trouble covering his living expenses due to being unable to find a job. Hankison is charged with wanton endangerment for firing into a neighboring apartment during the deadly raid in March of last year.
Tennessee Cases up
There are nearly 27-hundred new coronavirus cases in Tennessee. The Tennessee Department of Health reported the new cases yesterday, bringing the total since the outbreak began to over 903-thousand. An additional 16 COVID-19-related deaths were also reported, with the total number standing at nearly 12-thousand-775. There are over 12-hundred COVID-19 hospitalizations in Tennessee.
McConnell not impressed with Biden
The Senate Minority Leader is not impressed with the performance of the Biden administration after more than six months in office. Kentucky Republican Mitch McConnell took to the Senate floor and said messaging around the coronavirus pandemic has been “muddled.” He cited inflation and rising prices for food, gas and cars. McConnell also talked about the ongoing surge along the southern border and said the U.S. economy is not growing fast enough.
Kentucky State Police Investigating Fatal Collision During McCracken Pursuit
The Kentucky State Police are investigating a collision that claimed the lives of two people, one being the operator of a fleeing vehicle involved in a pursuit.
On Monday, August 2nd at around 1:45 p.m., the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office contacted Kentucky State Police, Post 1 and requested they investigate a collision at the intersection of US HWY 60 and Cairo Road involving a vehicle that was fleeing from deputies. Members of the KSP Post 1 Reconstruction Team, along with members of the KSP Critical Incident Response Team, responded to the scene. Initial investigation shows Lamont X. Young, 27 of De Soto, Illinois, operating a 2015 Honda Civic, was fleeing from a McCracken County Sheriff’s Deputy after they attempted to arrest Young. As Young was traveling westbound on Cairo Road toward the intersection of US 60, he failed to stop at a traffic light and collided with a 2017 Ford Explorer, being driven by Deborah K. Burge, 60 of Cunningham, Kentucky, who was eastbound on US 60.
Burge was declared deceased at the scene by the McCracken County Coroner. Young was airlifted from the scene to Skyline Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee for treatment of his injuries. He succumbed to his injuries early Tuesday morning.
The collision investigation is ongoing by the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team and the Kentucky State Police Post 1 Reconstruction Team. US 60 near the 6 mile marker was closed for approximately 3 1/2 hours.
