HASTINGS NAMES TO MSU ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
The fifth member of Murray State Athletics eight member 2021 Hall of Fame class is Marra Hastings, who won the 1997 NCAA Air Rifle championship and becomes the ninth member of MSU Rifle to be selected for the Hall of Fame. Now known as Marra McMillan, she racked up four OVC team championships and helped extend the Racers’ OVC championship winning streak to seven in a row. As of 2021, she is one of six Racers that have won seven NCAA individual titles. She earned NCAA All-America honors in both guns in each of her four years at MSU.
CARDINALS DOUBLE INDIANS
Paul DeJong hit the go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh in the Cardinals 4-2 victory over the Indians in Cleveland. Harrison Bader had three extra-base hits, including a solo shot, for St. Louis, which has won two straight. Adam Wainwright allowed two-runs over seven-frames for the win and Alex Reyes posted his 24th save. The Cardinals go for the sweep with game two on the air at 11:15 this morning on Classic Hits, WNBS.
UK ATHLETE CLAIMS SILVER MEDAL
Another University of Kentucky rifle athlete earns an Olympic medal. Mary Tucker captured silver in the air rifle mixed team event in Tokyo yesterday. Tucker teamed with Lucas Kozeniesky but came up a little short against China in the gold medal match.
UK FOOTBALL LANDS SPRINTER
The nation’s fastest high school sprinter says he will play football for the University of Kentucky. Jordan Anthony won the 100-meter dash this year at the Nike Outdoor Nationals Boys’ Track and Field Championships. He chose the Wildcats over several schools, including Ole Miss, Florida State and Boston College.
TITANS REPORT
The Tennessee Titans continue training camp after veteran players reported on Tuesday. It’s Julio Jones’ first training camp with Tennessee after the Titans traded for him this offseason. The Titans joint practice this training camp will be with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on August 18th…Mike Vrabel said he is “comfortable” with where the Titans are when it comes to the COVID-19 vaccine. He did not specify what Tennessee’s vaccination percentage is but said that the percentage has continued to grow. Vrabel also added that unvaccinated players will be ID’d in the building but not on the practice field.
AREA MINOR LEAGUE REPORT
In are minor league games, Memphis lost to the Stripers 1-0 at home, the Louisville Bats lost to the Iowa Cubs 3-2 in Des Moines, and the homestanding Nashville Sounds edged Columbus 4-3.
TENNESSEE NATIVE TAKES SILVER
Nashville native Alex Walsh took home the silver medal in the women’s 200-meter individual medley. The Harpeth Hall High School alum finished the race with a time of two minutes and 8-point-65 seconds, which was just ahead of fellow American and UVA swim teammate Kate Douglass, who got bronze. Japan’s Yui Ohashi finished just ahead of Walsh for the gold.
BLUES EXTEND FORWARD
The St. Louis Blues are locking up Pavel Buchnevich. St. Louis signed the forward to a four-year contract worth more than 23-million-dollars. The Blues acquired Buchnevich last Friday in a trade with the New York Rangers. The 26-year-old has spent his entire five-year career with New York, recording 195 points in 301 regular-season games.
NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
The United States men’s basketball team isn’t waiting until the next Olympiad to redeem itself. The Americans beat Iran 120-66 just days after dropping their opening game to France. Damian Lillard had 21 points, including seven 3-pointers, while Devin Booker had 16. The U.S. will play the Czech Republic on Saturday.
The NBA is planning to implement new rules to reduce non-basketball moves used to draw fouls. The Athletic reports the new changes will take affect in the 2021-22 season. The league will train officials to identify and rule overt non-basketball actions that draw contact with defenders. Those include: launching into a defender, abruptly veering off path, kicking the legs at an abnormal angle or the off-arm hooking the defender.
Major League Baseball is extending the administrative leave for Los Angeles Dodgers’ pitcher Trevor Bauer. It’s the third time Bauer’s leave has been extended and it now will go through August 6th. Bauer hasn’t pitched since late June as he is under separate investigations by the league and the City of Pasadena Police Department for allegations of sexual assault. The pitcher is scheduled for a civil hearing on Monday and Tuesday in L.A. Superior Court, stemming from a temporary restraining order filed by the pitcher’s accuser.
Ron Rivera said he is “beyond frustrated” with the Washington Football Team’s low vaccination rate. Rivera said that WFT has over 50-percent of its players vaccinated but he added that the team needs to have more guys vaccinated. Rivera, who was diagnosed with skin cancer last August, was also particularly concerned about how the Delta variant could potentially affect the Football Team. The NFL said yesterday that 85-percent of its players have received at least one shot.
The Avalanche are retaining their captain. The team announced it is bringing back Gabriel Landeskog on an eight-year deal. Landeskog is reportedly set to get an average of seven million dollars per season. The forward helped Colorado to a Presidents’ Trophy this past season. The Avalanche were bounced in six games by the Vegas Golden Knights in the second round of the playoffs.
It’s a day of highs and lows for Katie Ledecky. The Washington, DC-area native took the gold in the 1500-meter-freestyle by more than four seconds ahead of fellow American Erica Sullivan. Making its Olympiad debut, Ledecky set the Olympic Record on Monday in a qualifying heat. However, Ledecky finished fifth in the 200-meter freestyle, finishing more than a second off the time Australian Ariarne Titmus set. So far, she’s claimed a gold and silver at these Tokyo Games, and will have one more chance to medal at the women’s 800 meter freestyle.
