MARTYN BREWER NAMED TO MSU ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
The third member of Murray State Athletics eight member 2021 Hall of Fame class is track & field star, Martyn Brewer, who competed for the Racers from 1974-78. Brewer was part of the Racers All-America two-mile relay team that was one of the top teams in the nation in 1977. In 1976 and 1977, Brewer qualified for the NCAA D-I Cross Country championship and also qualified for the NCAA championships in the three-mile run, earning All-OVC status in every year he was at MSU. After his collegiate career, Brewer competed as a professional road racer. Brewer’s career in sports marketing matched his success in running, working at NIKE and Adidas America. Retired since 2019, Brewer lives in Portland, Oregon. MSU Hall of Fame Weekend is November 12 and 13.

NEWCOMB CLAIMS BUPA CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE
2020 Murray State hall of famer Patrick Newcomb scored his second victory on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica with a victory at the Bupa Championship in Tulum, Mexico. Newcomb defeated Oscar Fraustro on the second hole of a sudden death playoff at PGA Riviera Maya. Newcomb finished at 283 to get his third top-10 finish of the season. He was ranked 14th in the order of merit on the tour before the event in Mexico. The victory marks Newcomb’s second on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica after he won for the first time in 2017 at the Cape Breton Open in Nova Scotia.

CANAANLESS OVERLOOKED OVERMATCHED IN TBT
Tevin Mack had 16 points to lead Team Heartfire past The Overlooked 78-65 Saturday afternoon at the Illinois Region of The Basketball Tournament. Outrebounded 45-25, The Overlooked cut a 25 point deficit down to 11 in the fourth quarter, but could get no closer. Nate West had 13 points to lead The Overlooked, who were eliminated with the loss. Shaq Buchannan was the highest scoring former Racer with 10 points. The team was playing without Brandon Garrett, who returned home last week due to personal reasons, and Isaiah Canaan, who was not granted clearance to play by his professional team in Russia.

CARDINALS WIN FINALE VS THE REDS
The Cardinals exploded with seven fourth inning runs to salvage a 10-6 win over the Reds in the series finale in Cincinnati. The fourth inning included home runs by Harrison Bader and Dylan Carlson. Tyler O’Neill and Nolan Arenado also went deep for St. Louis. Ryan Helsley earned the win in relief and Cards Manager Mike Shildt was ejected in the third inning. St. Louis has a day off and will play at Cleveland tomorrow night.

TWO KENTUCKIANS CLAIM GOLD MEDALS
Lee Kiefer of Kentucky became the first American woman to win an Olympic medal in individual foil after taking home the gold medal yesterday, winning 15-13 in the final. It’s the first time since 1960 that an American, male or female, has won a medal in the individual foil event. The University of Kentucky’s Will Shaner won a gold medal in men’s air rifle. Shaner scored a record 251-point-six and became the second-youngest men’s Olympic champion in the event.

TITANS SIGN SIMON, WAIVE SKIPPER
The Tennessee Titans signed defensive end John Simon to a one-year deal. The 30-year-old Simon had two sacks and 53 tackles last season with the New England Patriots. Tennessee also waived outside linebacker Tuzar Skipper. Titans training camp starts on Wednesday.

AREA MINOR LEAGUE REPORT
In area Minor Leage games, the Louisville Bats were swept by Memphis and lost the last game of the series 9-3 in Louisville. Memphis has now won a franchise-best 15 straight games. Elsewhere it was Jacksonville over Nashville 5-2.

TENNESSEE STANDOUT MOVING ACROSS STATE
One of the top high school football players in the country is moving across Tennessee. Defensive lineman Walter Nolen the Third will play his senior season at Powell High School in Knox County. During his high school years Nolen has been enrolled in at least three high schools in three states, including playing last season for St. Benedict in the Memphis area. Most recruiting sites consider the six-foot-five, 280 pounder the top defensive lineman in the country.

NASHVILLE BEATS CINCINNATI
Nashville SC beat FC Cincinnati 3-0 on Saturday at Nissan Stadium. CJ Sapong scored twice for Nashville and Randall Leal added another score. Nashville has 26 points and plays Toronto FC on the road on Sunday.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
Swimmer Katie Ledecky is being upset in one of her signature events. Australian Ariarne Titmus snuck past the American in the final stretch to win the 400-meter freestyle by less than a second to take gold in Tokyo. The Washington-DC-area native Ledecky earned the silver medal, after having set the World Record in the event at the last Summer Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro.

The Padres are adding a big bat to their lineup. According to multiple reports, the Padres are acquiring All-Star second baseman Adam Frazier from the Pirates. The second baseman entered Sunday with a .327 average, which was second best in Major League Baseball. In return, Pittsburgh will receive three prospects, including outfielder Jack Suwinski in the deal.

One of the NFL’s best pass rushers wants out of the desert. According to ESPN, Cardinals superstar Chandler Jones has requested a trade. Jones is reportedly unhappy with his contract as he enters the final year of his deal. The Cardinals reportedly expect Jones to report for training camp on Tuesday. Jones missed much of the 2020 season with a torn bicep. He is expected to be paired with the team’s latest pass rushing acquisition, J.J. Watt, this upcoming season.

The Big 12 executive committee is making sure they speak with Texas and Oklahoma as talks swirl of the two programs departing for the SEC. The executive committee met with the presidents of Texas and Oklahoma on Sunday via a video conference. League commissioner Bob Bowlsby says the meeting was “cordial” and included proposals that would benefit both programs as well as the conference. The commissioner also stated conversations with the two programs are likely to continue.

Cameron Champ lived up to his last name in the 3M Open, winning the tournament with a 15-under score. Champ shot a 66 in Round Four to secure the tournament win. Louis Oosthuizen, Jhonattan Vegas and Charl Schwartzel ended in a three-way tie for second place with 13-under finishes. Keith Mitchell rounded out the top five with a 12-under score.

Slovenian basketball star Luka Doncic is already looking to make Olympic basketball history. Doncic scored 48 points to lead Slovenia to a 118-100 win over Argentina. The 22-year-old nearly broke the Olympic record for scoring, while also collecting 11 rebounds, five assists and three blocks. Doncic improves to 14-0 while competing for Slovenia in major competitions and has put the country in a position to advance out of their group and into the medal round.
