COACH T LEADS OFF MSU HALL OF FAME CLASS ANNOUNCEMENTS
Murray State Athletics has selected an eight member 2021 Hall of Fame class which will be released in alphabetical order over the next eight weekdays. The first inductee revealed is Coach Tevester Anderson, who led the Racer men’s basketball program from 1998-2003 and was the first black head coach in MSU history. Leading the Racers to 103 wins in five seasons, Anderson’s 1998 team opened the Regional Special Events Center before CFSB acquired naming rights. His teams won a pair of Ohio Valley Conference regular season titles and two OVC Tournament championships which led to a pair of trips to the NCAA Tournament. An elite level recruiter, he was also assistant coach to Mark Gottfried from 1995-98, where Anderson was part of three OVC regular season titles and two NCAA appearances. The Hall of Fame induction banquet will be held on the evening of November 12 at the CFSB Center.

SEC MAY ADD TWO TEAMS FROM BIG 12
The University of Texas and University of Oklahoma could begin petitioning the Southeastern Conference as soon as next week for membership. According to WFAA in Dallas, the two schools will send a letter to the Big 12 Conference early next week stating neither school will renew their media contracts when they expire in 2025. After such, the two schools will then petition for entry into the S-E-C for membership. The move would turn the athletic conference into a 16-member superconference, which would include the likes of Alabama, Louisiana State, Georgia, Florida, Texas A&M, and others.

CARDINALS EDGE CUBS
Yadier Molina’s walk-off single in the bottom of the tenth lifted the Cardinals to a 3-2 extra-inning win over the Cubs at Busch Stadium. Harrison Bader and Dylan Carlson each had RBI doubles for St. Louis and T.J. McFarland earned the win in relief. Craig Kimbrel was tagged with the loss and Rafael Ortega and Eric Sogard drove in runs for Chicago. The Cards go for the series win tonight, with airtime set for 5:20 on WNBS.

CARDINALS TO HONOR GIBSON AND BROCK
The Cardinals will honor team legends Bob Gibson and Lou Brock this season at Busch Stadium. Both Hall of Famers passed away last year. Lou Brock Night will take place August 20th ahead of the club’s series opener against the Pirates. Bob Gibson Day will come just two days later in the morning before the series finale. Both days of remembrance will come on the Cards’ Hall of Fame weekend.

BLUES AND PREDS LOSE PLAYERS IN EXPANSION DRAFT
Former Predators center Calle Järnkrok was selected by the Seattle Kraken in the Expansion Draft. Jarnkrok had been with Nashville for eight seasons. The 29-year-old finished with 28 points last season. The Blues lost Vince Dunn. The defenceman was picked by the Seattle Kraken in last night’s NHL Expansion Draft. Dunn was originally drafted by St. Louis in the second round of the 2015 NHL Draft. Last season, the Ontario native scored six goals and 14 assists in 43 games.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
The NHL’s newest team now have a roster. The Seattle Kraken picked 30 players from 30 of the league’s teams in the Expansion Draft on Wednesday. Among the selections were former Calgary defenseman and captain Mark Giordano, Tampa Bay center Yanni Gourde and Florida goalie Chris Driedger. Seattle also signed former Dallas defenseman Jamie Oleksiak to a five-year contract worth four-point-six million dollars per year.

The NHL is releasing its schedule for the 2021-22 season today. The league plans to play a full 82-game slate, starting in October and ending in April. Due to COVID-19, the NHL played a shortended 56-game schedule this season, with the Stanley Cup ending in June. The league also plans to return to its previous divisional alignment and have teams play every other team at least twice.

The Milwaukee Bucks will hold a championship parade today. It’ll take place in downtown Milwaukee beginning at 11 a.m. Central Time. The parade will mark the first championship for the team in 50 years after they beat the Phoenix Suns in the NBA Finals. A championship celebration will be held following the parade in the Deer District. That area became nationally recognized as it was shown on TV many times during the series.

Former Chicago White Sox catcher Yermin Mercedes is stepping away from baseball. Mercedes announced the shocking decision on his social media, citing that he plans to walk away from baseball “for a while” and that his career is “over.” The 28-year-old had played in 68 games this season with the White Sox, but was sent down to Triple-A earlier this month. Mercedes was highly touted prospect who made his MLB debut in 2020.

Louis Oosthuizen will look to bounce back after a disappointing finish last week at the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota, starting today. Oosthuizen shot a one-over 71 in the final round of the Open Championship to slip from the lead to a third-place finish at Royal Saint George’s. Also in action are Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler, Sergio Garcia, and Bubba Watson. Michael Thompson will look to defend his title.
