RAIN FORCES EARLY END TO TWO-MAN TOURNEY AT MCC
Rain washed away Sunday’s play in the Murray Country Club Two-Man Tournament, forcing a tie in the third annual event. Defending champions Preston English and Josh Burks and the duo of Brock Simmons and Lance Davis both shot a 15-under 57 on Saturday to take the tournament lead going into Sunday. Play was suspended about halfway through Sunday’s rounds. Tournament officials attempted a restart, but the course was unplayable. Forty-four teams competed in the event, which featured three flights. Darrick Herndon and Chris Dodson won the first flight on a countback as three teams finished at 65. Will and Jeremy Snodgrass on the second flight with a 70. Closest to the pin winners included Darrick Herndon and Brad Clendenen. Ty Andrews and Brock Simmons won long drive contest, while Brock Simmons & Lance Davis, and Shane Andrus & Josh Morris won skins.

CUBS NINTH INNING RALLY STUNS CARDINALS
The Cubs rallied for six runs in the ninth to beat the Cardinals 7-6 at Busch Stadium. Ian Happ hit the go-ahead two-run double in the ninth and Javier Báez drove in a pair for Chicago, which snapped a two-game skid. Alex Reyes was tagged with the loss and the blown save. Nolan Arenado, Tommy Edman, and José Rondón each homered for St. Louis as the Cards’ three-game win streak came to an end. Game 3 of the 4 game series is on the air at 6:20 tonight on WNBS.

BEREZOWITZ SUSPENDED
Kentucky Football Chief of Staff Dan Berezowitz has been suspended from the Wildcats program after being arrested for fourth-degree assault in May. He is currently subject to an investigation by the university. Berezowitz has been with the Wildcats program since 2013.

SEC MEDIA DAY CONTINUES
New Vanderbilt head football coach Clark Lea will field questions today at SEC Football Media Days in Hoover, Alabama. Sophomore offensive lineman Bradley Ashmore and junior defensive lineman Daevion Davis will join Lea at the event, which ends tomorrow. Head coaches and selected players from Kentucky and Tennessee addressed the media yesterday.

AREA MINOR LEAGUE ROUNDUP
In area Minor League games, the Louisville Bats lost to the Memphis Redbirds 2-1 in Louisville, and the Nashville Sounds were blanked 4-0 at Jacksonville.

UTM AND WKU ANNOUNCE OOC GAME
Western Kentucky has added another opponent to its 2021-22 nonconference men’s basketball schedule. The Hilltoppers will host UT Martin at Diddle Arena on November 27 according to the Bowling Green Daily News. WKU is coming off a 21-8 season that featured a runner-up finish in the Conference USA Tournament and a trip to the National Invitation Tournament quarterfinals. The Skyhawks went 8-16 overall last season and 6-14 in Ohio Valley Conference play.

MANNING TO JOIN SELECTED MNF GAMES
Vol For Life Peyton Manning will be part of what’s being called an alternate Monday Night Football broadcast. ESPN announced the move on Monday. The new show will feature Manning and his brother Eli and will also include other former NFL players and celebrities. The sports network says the Monday Night Football MegaCast will air on ESPN2 for ten games over the course of the next three seasons.

SWEENEY SIGNS WITH YANKEES
The Yankees have agreed to terms with Trey Sweeney of Eastern Illinois, the club’s first-round selection in the 2021 MLB Draft. New York’s deal with Sweeney will reportedly be worth $3 million. Sweeney was one of the best college bats in this year’s Draft class, hitting.382 with 14 home runs in 48 games this season on his way to being named the Ohio Valley Conference’s Player of the Year.

DUST BOWL BEGINS
Games for the 48th Annual Dust Bowl outdoor basketball tournament start today. The games will be played today through Saturday at Kendall Perkins Park in Owensboro. It’s a double-elimination tournament. The tournament was canceled last year over coronavirus concerns.

NASHVILLE AT COLUMBUS TONIGHT
Nashville SC gets back on the pitch tonight in a road match against the Columbus Crew. Nashville is fifth in the MLS Eastern Conference standings with 22 points while Columbus is right behind them with 20 points. Nashville topped Chicago 5-1 on Saturday.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
The Bucks are NBA champions for the first time in 50 years after beating the Suns 105-98 in Game Six of the NBA Finals in Milwaukee. Giannis Antetokounmpo went off for 50 points and 14 rebounds, earning NBA Finals MVP honors. The Bucks become just the fifth team to win a title after trailing 2-0 in the Finals. It’s just their second championship and first since 1971. Khris Middleton netted 17 points and Bobby Portis posted 16 off the bench in the victory. Chris Paul scored 26 points and Devin Booker had 19 for Phoenix, which was seeking its first-ever title. The Suns were making just their third NBA Finals appearance in franchise history, but first since 1993 when they lost to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.

The Olympics officially kick off tonight, days ahead of the opening ceremonies in Tokyo. Softball and soccer are on the docket for the first day, as the United States will be in action in both events. The U.S. takes on Italy in at Fukushima Azuma Baseball Stadium in the opening round of softball, while the United States Women’s National Soccer Team will meet Sweden at Tokyo Stadium in Group G action.

President Biden is paying tribute to the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Hosting a White House ceremony, Biden said the team made a strong late-season run and “stormed through the playoffs.” The Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in February’s Super Bowl. Biden singled out 43-year-old quarterback Tom Brady for praise and noted that Brady was the oldest QB to win the Super Bowl.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is turning down the chance to become the NFL’s top paid quarterback. ESPN is reporting Rodgers declined a two-year extension that would have made him the highest-earning player in football. The deal would have kept the QB in Green Bay for the next five seasons. Rodgers said in April he doesn’t want to return to the Packers and was a no-show at the team’s voluntary OTA’s earlier this year. Green Bay is scheduled to start Training Camp on July 28th.

The Seattle Kraken are making their selections tonight in the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft. The 32nd and newest addition to the league will have its choice of one player from each team, except for the Vegas Golden Knights. In total, the Kraken will select 30 players for their inaugural season. Carey Price, Vladimir Tarasenko and Alexander Ovechkin headline the players that were exposed by NHL teams.
