BOWLING NAMED MURRAY HIGH HEAD FOOTBALL COACH
Darren Bowling has been named the new head football coach at Murray High. Bowling comes to Murray from Olive Branch High School in Olive Branch in Mississippi where he served as Head Coach, Athletic Director, and teacher. In 11 seasons as head coach at Union City High School in Tennessee, Bowling led the team to state championships in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017, which included a 38-game winning streak over three seasons. During Bowling’s 12 seasons there, Union City won seven district titles with 116 wins and a .753 winning percentage. Bowling was named the 2013 Tennessee Titan’s High School Coach of the Year and the TSSAA Coach of the Year in 2009, 2013, 2014, and 2017. Bowling’s overall coaching record is 216-95. Due to the KHSAA Dead Period restrictions, a formal introduction with players, coaches, parents, and the public will occur after the dead period ends on July 9.
CARDINALS TAME SNAKES
The Cardinals broke a 1-1 tie with six runs in the seventh in a 7-1 win against the D-Backs at Busch Stadium. Paul DeJong smacked a two-run homer and Yadier Molina drove in two for St. Louis in the seventh. Giovanny Gallegos got the win in relief. Game 2 of the series in on the air tonight at 6:20 on WNBS.
VANDY TAKES CWS CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES OPENER
Vanderbilt dominated Mississippi State 8-2 in Game One of the College World Series Final. Game Two starts tonight at 6 Central Time on ESPN. If Vandy wins tonight then it wins the College World Series for the second year in a row.
PREDS TO PLAY AT NISSAN STADIUM
The Nashville Predators will play an outdoor game next season. Nashville will host Tampa Bay on February 26th in Nissan Stadium as part of the NHL’s Stadium Series.
CARDS VS SPARTY IN DECEMBER
The Louisville Cardinals will play Michigan State on the road in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The game is set to be in East Lansing on December 1st.
CATS VOLLEYBALL TEAM TAKING TITLE LAP
The National Champion Kentucky volleyball team takes its NCAA trophy on tour for fans this week. The first stop is tomorrow afternoon at the Marketplace Kroger in Union at 4:30. The Wildcats will then head to Great America Ballpark in Cincinnati to take part in pregame ceremonies before the Reds and San Diego game. Wednesday afternoon head coach Craig Skinner and players will be right down the street from campus at the Euclid Avenue Kroger.
FOOTBALL CHIEF OF STAFF AT UK ARRESTED
Kentucky football Chief of Staff Dan Berezowitz is facing an assault charge. Berezowitz was arrested Sunday night after police say he was seen on video in a physical altercation with his wife. He is still in custody. UK Athletics officials say they know about the arrest and are gathering further information.
NIL BILL TO BE FILED IN KENTUCKY
Kentucky lawmakers are preparing to file a bill that would allow college athletes to have some earning power. The bill reflects action taken by Governor Beshear last week in an executive order. The order allows college athletes to profit from the use of their name, image, and likeness. Lawmakers say the athletes should have a share in how they are portrayed.
NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
The Lightning got an early goal from Erik Cernak as they cruised to victory 5-1 over the Canadiens in Game One of the Stanley Cup Final in Tampa. Nikita Kucherov scored twice in the third while Yanni Gourde and Steven Stamkos also found the back of the net. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 18 saves in the win. Ben Chiarot scored the lone Montreal goal. Carey Price made 21 saves in the loss for the Habs. Game Two is Wednesday night.
Paul George went off for 41 points, 13 rebounds and six assists as the Clippers staved off elimination with a 116-102 win over the Suns in Game Five in Phoenix. Reggie Jackson added 23 points as the Clippers cut the series deficit to three games to two in favor of the Suns. Tonight, the Bucks visit the Hawks for Game Four. Trae Young is questionable as he battles an ankle and foot issue. Milwaukee leads the series, 2-1.
Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout was moved to the 60-day injured list as he continues to recover from a right calf strain. Trout suffered the injury on May 17th and was projected to miss six-to-eight weeks. Angels manager Joe Maddon said the outfielder is more than fifty percent healed and is “doing really well.” Trout will be out until after the MLB All-Star break and is eligible to return on July 17th for Los Angeles.
Receiver Demaryius Thomas is announcing his retirement after ten seasons in the NFL. Thomas will be honored by the Denver Broncos during their home opener on September 26th, serving as an honorary team captain. The receiver was a four-time Pro Bowler in Denver and ranks second in receiving yards in Broncos team history. Thomas was a member of the Super Bowl 50 winning team and was the highest receiver taken in the 2010 NFL Draft. He also spent time with the Houston Texans and New York Jets, appearing for his final time in the 2019 season.
Americans are making waves on the first day at Wimbledon. Frances Tiafoe pulled the first major upset of the tournament on the men’s side by knocking off fourth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets. The 23-year-old Hyattsville, Maryland, native won 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 over Tsitsipas. On the women’s side, 28-year-old Sloane Stephens upset two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova 6-3, 6-4 on Centre Court. On Tuesday, Roger Federer and the number-two seeded Daniil Medvedev will be in action while Americans Alison Riske, Venus Williams and Serena Williams will all be on the court.
