
ARANT AND HICKS CLAIM REGION 1 SOFTBALL HONORS
The Kentucky Softball Coaches Association named Calloway County’s Kady Arant the Region 1 coach of the year and Adison Hicks of Calloway County was named Region 1 Player of the Year. The Lakers finished the season with a record of 26-11 while winning the inaugural Kentucky 2A State Tournament and also finished as the runner up in the Region 1 Tournament. Hicks batted .536 with 6 doubles, 7 triples, 7 home runs, 25 RBI’s and 51 runs scored. Arant and Hicks were recognized yesterday at the East-West All Star Series in Bowling Green.
COZART MAKES NCAA BASEBALL ALL REGION TEAM
Murray State’s Jordan Cozart was among seven Ohio Valley Conference baseball players named to the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division I All-Region team. The teams are voted on by members of the American Baseball Coaches Association. Cozart hit .316 in 56 games with 71 hits, 17 doubles, 19 home runs, and 58 RBI. His 19 home runs tied him for the Ohio Valley Conference lead with teammate Brock Anderson. Cozart was also named to the OVC All-Tournament Team.
CARDINALS FALTER IN DETROIT
The Cardinals outhit the Tigers but still fell 6-2 in Detroit. John Gant was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs in three frames and Nolan Arenado hit a solo home run for St. Louis, which was swept in the two-game set. The Cards return home to open a four-game series against the Pirates tonight with airtime at 6:20 on WNBS AM and FM.
VANDY STAYS ALIVE IN CWS WITH WALKOFF WIN
Vanderbilt’s Spencer Jones scored on a walkoff wild pitch in the ninth inning that secured a 6-5 win for the Commodores over Stanford. Vandy needed the win since it was an elimination game and stays alive in the College World series. The Commodores will play NC State tomorrow afternoon.
AREA MINOR LEAGUE ROUNDUP
In area minor league games, the Louisville Bats beat the Indianapolis Indians 5-0 in Louisville, the Memphis Redbirds topped the Mud Hens 4-0 in Toledo, and Nashville lost to Charlotte 13-4.
CATS VS KANSAS IN BIG12/SEC CHALLENGE
Kentucky will go on the road to play the Kansas Jayhawks in the 2022 Big 12/SEC Challenge. In the past, the Big 12/SEC Challenge games have been on the last Saturday of January, which will be January 29th in the 2021-22 season. Other notable matchups in the challenge include Tennessee at Texas and Baylor at Alabama.
TILGHMAN NAMED KINNEY AD
Paducah Tilghman High School has named Deatrik Kinney athletics director and assistant principal. Kinney arrives from Todd County Central High School, where he served as principal for three years and assistant principal for two years. The Murray State graduate was also a teacher for eight years at Fulton County.

Trae Young scored 48 points and dished out 11 assists as the Hawks topped the Bucks 116-113 in Game One of the Eastern Conference Finals in Milwaukee. John Collins added 23 points and 15 rebounds for the Hawks. Atlanta takes a 1-0 series lead. Tonight, the Suns will visit the Clippers for Game Three of the Western Conference Finals. Phoenix holds a 2-0 series lead.
Kevin Durant and Damian Lillard will highlight the United States’ men’s Olympic basketball team when they take the court next month in Tokyo. However, Team USA will be without Durant’s Brooklyn teammate, James Harden, who had previously committed to play. He will be sitting out with an injured hamstring. Among those named the team will be Durant’s former Golden State teammate Draymond Green, Bradley Beal, Bam Adebayo, Kevin Love, and others.
The Celtics are planning to hire Nets assistant coach Ime Udoka as their new head coach. Udoka will replace Brad Stevens, who recently took over as Boston’s president of basketball operations. The coach joins the Celtics after one season as an assistant on Steve Nash’s staff in Brooklyn. He previously spent seven seasons as an assistant with the Spurs and one with the 76ers, winning a NBA championship in 2014. Udoka also played in the NBA from 2004-to-2011.
Anthony Beauvillier capitalized on a turnover deep in the offensive zone to score with 1:08 into overtime as the Islanders beat the Lightning 3-2 in Game Six in Uniondale. With the win, New York forces a Game Seven on Friday night in Tampa. Brayden Point scored in the first period for Tampa Bay, his ninth goal in as many games. Tonight, the Golden Knights will try and force a Game Seven themselves as they battle the Canadiens in Montreal.
Mets slugger Pete Alonso has entered the 2021 Home Run Derby, giving him a chance to defend his 2019 derby title. Alonso made the official announcement on his Instagram page and has 11 bombs so far this season. The Mets first baseman hit 23 homers in the final round of the 2019 derby to defeat Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. All-Star festivities will be at Coors Field this year, so expect some extra long moonshots from the Alonso in high altitude.
Dustin Johnson will look to defend his title at the Travelers Championship starting Thursday at the TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut. The blooming feud between Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau will be sure to tantalize viewers and patrons alike. However, the two will have tee times separated by nearly five hours. Last week’s U.S. Open winner, Jon Rahm, will not be playing in this week’s PGA Tour event.
