BUTLER AND TRINITY WIN STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Louisville teams claimed both KHSAA titles over the weekend with Butler crushing Daviess County 13-2 yesterday at Cropp Stadium in Lexington to take the KHSAA Softball State Championship. On Saturday at Legends Field in Lexington, Louisville Trinity blanked McCracken County 10-0 to win the KHSAA Baseball State Championship. The Mustangs out slugged Danville 13-10 on Friday to advance tot the title game, while Lyon County fell in the semifinals in a 10-3 loss to Trinity. The Mustangs were runner-up for the second straight state championship event and finished the season with a 35-5 record. Lyon County finished at 30-8.

CARDINALS SPLIT WITH BRAVES
Adam Wainwright earned a seven-inning complete game victory after the Cardinals took the first game of their doubleheader with the Atlanta Braves 9-1. Unfortunately, St. Louis was unable to take the second game as the Cards were held scoreless in a 1-0 loss. Kwang Hyun Kim surrendered the lone score after he allowed a solo home run to Ronald Acuna Jr. in the third inning for the 100th of his career.

PAYNE HELPS BOOKER SHINE IN GAME 1 WIN
The Suns are striking the first blow of the Western Conference Finals with a 120-114 win over the Clippers in Game One in Phoenix. Devin Booker finished with a triple-double with 40 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists while former Racer Cam Payne added 11 points and 9 assists. The Hawks defeated the 76ers 103-96 in Game Seven of the Eastern Conference Semifinals in Philadelphia.

VOLS FALL TO LOSERS BRACKET, DORES ADVANCE IN CWS
The Tennessee baseball team is facing elimination from the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. The Volunteers were shut out, 6-0, by Virginia in their opening game yesterday. They’ll need to beat Texas tomorrow afternoon to remain alive. The game against the Longhorns is set for 1 pm and can be seen on ESPN2. Vanderbilt advanced Saturday with a 7-6 win over Arizona and will face NC State in a winners bracket game tonight.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
Jon Rahm is the winner of the 121st U.S. Open at the South Course at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, California. Rahm dramatically birdied 17 and 18 to go from one shot down to one shot up and finish at six-under for the tournament. He shot a four-under 67 come from three-strokes back at the start of Sunday and win the third major of the season. It’s the 26-year-old’s first career major championship. Rahm famously had to withdraw from the Memorial Tournament two weeks ago when leading by six strokes heading into the final round due to a positive COVID test. Louis Oosthuizen finished second at five-under.

Nicolas Roy scored 1:18 into overtime to lift the Golden Knights to a 2-1 win over the Canadiens in Montreal. Robin Lehner made 27 saves as Vegas tied the best-of-seven series at two-games-apiece. The Islanders are looking to capitalize on their momentum as they travel to Tampa tonight to take on the Lightning in Game Five. New York won Game Four 3-2 in Uniondale.

The losing is reaching historic lows for the Diamondbacks, who fell 9-8 to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Phoenix. The Snakes have now lost 17-straight, a franchise record, and are 1-and-17 for the month of June. In the game, Albert Pujols passed Mel Ott for 14th on the career runs list. In the Bronx, the Yankees ended their 2-1 win over the Athletics with a 5-4-3 triple play. New York has won two-straight and five-of-six.

Kyle Larson is keeping his spot in victory lane. Larson took home the win at the NASCAR Cup Series race at Nashville. It’s the fourth-straight week Larson has found his way into victory lane, after wins at the All-Star Race, Sonoma, and Charlotte. Ross Chastain finished in second. William Byron took third while Aric Almirola and Kevin Harvick rounded out the top five.
