
LYON COUNTY ADVANCES TO KHSAA BASEBALL SEMIFINALS
Christian O’Daniel drove in two runs as Lyon County defeated Whitley County 4-2 in the quarterfinals of the KHSAA State Baseball Tournament at Legends Field in Lexington. Travis Yancy and Corey Cissell each had an RBI to back the complete game effort of Austin Long who scattered four hits, walking one and striking out eight to improve to 7-3. The 30-7 Lyons advance to today’s 8:30 pm semifinal game against Trinity after their 12-1 win over Hazard. McCracken County will battle Danville in today’s 5:30 semifinal game.
KHSAA STATE SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT CONTINUES TODAY
The KHSAA State Softball Tournament begins today in Lexington with four quarterfinal games. In the opener, it’s Boyle County vs Lewis County, followed by Daviess County and Pendleton County. The late games feature Lafayette vs Butler and the nightcap finds Warren East facing Green County. The semi finals are Saturday and the championship game will be Sunday.
CARDINALS BLANKED BY BRAVES
The Cardinals’ offense had no answer for Braves starter Charlie Morton, who carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning in Atlanta’s 4-0 win at Truist Park. St. Louis only recorded three-hits in the game. John Gant dropped to 4-and-5 after giving up three-runs over five and a third. Game 2 of the series is on the air tonight at 5:25 on WNBS AM and FM.
CARDINALS ADD LEBLANC
The St. Louis Cardinals announced yesterday that they have signed veteran left-handed pitcher Wade LeBlanc to a free-agent contract. The 36-year old is a veteran of 13 seasons in the majors. LeBlanc was most recently pitching for Round Rock, the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, where he was 2-0 with a 2.50 ERA in three starts covering 18.0 innings pitched. To make room for LeBlanc on the team’s 25-player active roster, right-handed pitcher Seth Elledge was optioned to Memphis.
AREA MINOR LEAGUE ROUNDUP
In area Minor League games, Louisville lost to the Storm Chasers 6-5 in Omaha. The Memphis Redbirds lost to the Indians 3-2 in Indianapolis in 11 innings. Nashville edged Gwinnett 3-2.
VOLS AND DORES BEGIN CWS PLAY THIS WEEKEND
The Vols and Commodores can take their first step towards a championship this weekend at the College World Series. Vandy gets started against Arizona tomorrow night on ESPN. The Vols will play Virginia on Sunday afternoon on ESPN2.
NASCAR COMES TO TENNESSEE
The NASCAR Cup Series will look to play a new tune in the Music City on Sunday. It will be the first cup race in history at Nashville Superspeedway. It’s the first cup race in Nashville since 1984. Kyle Larson rolls into the race with plenty of momentum after winning the NASCAR All-Star Race. Larson also picked up a win the week prior at Sonoma Raceway.
BANE MAKES NBA ALL-ROOKIE TEAM
Desmond Bane made the All-Rookie Second Team. Bane averaged 9.2 points per game for the Grizzlies. Memphis selected him with the 30th pick in last year’s draft out of TCU.
NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
The Bucks and Nets are going the distance in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Khris Middleton scored 38 points as the Bucks forced a Game Seven with a 104-89 win over the Nets in Game Six in Milwaukee. Kevin Durant had 32 points in defeat for the Nets. Game Seven will be Saturday in Brooklyn. On Friday, the Hawks will look to close out the 76ers in Game Six in Philadelphia, and the Clippers will look to finish off the Jazz in the sixth game of their series in Los Angeles.
Rick Carlisle is no longer the coach of the Dallas Mavericks. Carlisle told ESPN he let Mavs owner Mark Cuban know today he was resigning calling it solely his own decision. The Mavericks released an official announcement not long after. He also says it’s been a great 13 years in Dallas and it was an honor working with Cuban. The Mavs said yesterday Donnie Nelson wouldn’t return as GM. Carlisle won a title with Dallas in 2011. He is planning to stay in coaching.
The Tampa Bay Lightning are taking back home-ice advantage in their Stanley Cup semifinal series with the Islanders after a 2-1 win in Game Three in New York. Brayden Point’s 11th goal of the postseason was the difference as the Bolts grabbed a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven set. Game Four is Saturday in New York. The other semifinal series between the Golden Knights and Canadiens shifts to Montreal for Game Three tomorrow night. That best-of-seven set is tied at one game apiece after the teams split the first two games in Sin City.
Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes are sharing the cover of the latest Madden video game. They’re both featured as the front men on Madden 22. The honor comes just months after they went against each other in the Super Bowl. Brady came out on top in that matchup as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Kansas City Chiefs. The last time the video game’s cover was shared by two players came back when Madden 10 was released. That’s when Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald and Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu got the honors.
Darkness suspended the first round of the U.S. Open with 36 golfers still out on the course. Russell Henley and Louis Oosthuizen are tied for first at minus-four, but Oosthuizen only finished 16 holes. Francesco Molinari and Rafa Cabrera Bello are tied at three-under. Brooks Koepka is in a group tied for fifth at two-under.
Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka is withdrawing from Wimbledon to spend time with friends and family ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. Osaka’s representative said she will be ready for the Olympics and is excited to play in front of her fans. Osaka took home her first Grand Slam title after defeating Jennifer Brady in the Australian Open in February.
