STATE BASEBALL TOURNAMENT RESUMES IN LEXINGTON
The KHSAA State Baseball Tournament continues today with quarterfinal action at Legends Field in Lexington. In the 5 pm game, 33-5 McCracken County faces 28-12 Collins. Then at 8:30 pm, its 39-3 Danville squaring off against 34-7 Lafayette. Two more quarterfinal games are on tap tomorrow with Lyon County playing Whitley County in the early game, followed by Louisville Trinity and Hazard in the nightcap.

GOLDY STRIKE LEADS CARDINALS PAST MARLINS
Paul Goldschmidt smacked a walkoff solo homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Cardinals past the Marlins 2-1 in St. Louis. Goldschmidt also hit an RBI-single in the sixth to tie the game for the Redbirds, who have won consecutive games for the first time since a four-game winning streak May 26th through the 29th. Alex Reyes came away with the win. Airtime for today’s game is 11:20 this morning on Classic Hits WNBS AM and FM.

WAINO ADMITS TO USING FOREIGN SUBSTANCE
Adam Wainwright is admitting that he used a foreign substance on the baseball during the 2019 season. The longtime Cardinals starter was named in a Sports Illustrated report detailing foreign substances in baseball. Wainwright reportedly received a sticky mixture of substances from former Los Angeles Angels equipment manager Bubba Harkins. Wainwright said he has nothing to hide, adding that the substance didn’t work for him. His comments come as MLB announced yesterday it will suspend players ten days if they are caught using any foreign substance on the ball.

AREA MINOR LEAGUE ROUNDUP
In Minor League action, Louisville had trouble limiting runs in a 11-5 defeat to the Storm Chasers in Omaha. Louisville is back in action tonight in Omaha. Memphis could only generate one run in its 6-1 loss to the Indians in Indianapolis. The series continues tonight in Indy. In other action, Gwinnett edged Nashville 2-1.

UK UNVEILS 2021 HALL OF FAME CLASS
The University of Kentucky Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2021 was announced yesterday. Chosen for induction were Bettie Lou Evans in women’s golf, Kendra Harrison of women’s track and field, Nazr Mohammed of men’s basketball, Larry Warford of football, Bob Whelan of men’s track and field, and Arin Gilliland Wright of women’s soccer chosen for induction. The new Hall of Famers will be inducted during a Hall of Fame Weekend at a date to be determined. They will be joined by the 2020 class that could not be honored last year because of Covid precautions. That class included Chanda Bell of softball, Sawyer Carroll of baseball, Ron Mercer of men’s basketball, AJ Reed of baseball, Danny Trevathan of football, and Wayne Turner of men’s basketball. A committee consisting of Hall of Famers, media members, campus representatives, and current coaches and administrators elects new inductees each year.

TO CATS SELECTED TO ATTEND NBA DRAFT COMBINE
The NBA announced on Tuesday evening that 69 players are set to attend the Microsoft Surface NBA Draft Combine from June 21-27. Kentucky’s Brandon Boston and Isaiah Jackson made the list and will attend the event in Chicago. Boston was Kentucky’s leading scorer at 11.5 points per game but only shot 36 percent from the field. Jackson averaged 8.4 points and 6.6 per game. Davion Mintz did not make the combine list, so he could return for another season.

LOUISVILLE INDOOR FOOTBALL TEAM TO BE TERMINATED FROM LEAGUE
WAVE-TV reports that Louisville’s indoor football team has been crossed off the schedules of its opponents. On Monday, the Indoor Football League’s board of directors voted unanimously to terminate the Xtreme from the league after failing to meet league obligations. Louisville will be removed from the schedule this weekend.

NEYLAND AT FULL CAPACITY THIS FALL
When football time in Tennessee arrives this fall the stands will be full at Neyland Stadium. UT announced Tuesday Neyland Stadium will operate at full capacity this football season. Capacity was limited to 25 percent last season due to coronavirus concerns. The Vols will play their home opener on Thursday night, September 2nd against Bowling Green.

DUPREE SAYS HE IS PROGRESSING FROM ACL INJURY
New Tennessee Titan Bud Dupree said in a press conference this week that his recovery from his ACL tear is on schedule. Dupree tore his ACL in December when he was with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Dupree signed a five-year, 82.5 million dollar deal with the Titans this offseason.

MOREHEAD STANDOUT TRANSFERS TO LASALLE
The La Salle women’s basketball team has added Morehead State transfer Gabby Crawford. During the 2020-21 campaign at Morehead State, Crawford averaged 12.3 ppg and 8.7 rpg to land her on the Ohio Valley Conference All-Newcomer Team. It is her third team in three years. Prior to arriving at Morehead State, Crawford played her rookie campaign at Ole Miss where she appeared in 28 games with six starts.

TENNESSEE TECH TRANSFER LANDS AT FLORIDA STATE
Florida State baseball has landed a commitment from Tennessee Tech transfer Brett Roberts who will come to Tallahassee as a redshirt sophomore and be immediately eligible. The middle infielder led Tech with a .343 average, 17 stolen bases, 70 hits, 13 doubles, and 39 RBI. Despite playing eight less games, those numbers would’ve led FSU in hits and stolen bases.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
Kevin Durant played every minute of Game Five as he tallied 49 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists in the Nets 114-108 win over the Bucks in Brooklyn. Jeff Green had 27 points off the bench as he made seven three-pointers as Brooklyn took a three-games-to-two lead in the best-of-seven series. Tonight, the Clippers and Jazz will meet in Salt Lake City for Game Five and the Hawks visit the 76ers for the fifth game of their series. Both series are tied at two games apiece.

Andrei Vasilevskiy made 24 saves as the Lightning topped the Islanders 4-2 in Tampa in Game Two. Brayden Point, Ondrej Palat, Jan Rutta, and Victor Hedman found the back of the net for Tampa Bay as they evened the series at one-game apiece. Tonight, the Canadiens will look to bounce back against the Golden Knights in Las Vegas. The Habs were roughed up physically and on the scoreboard in Game One, losing 4-1 to Vegas.

Tyler Glasnow has a potentially serious problem with his pitching elbow, and he’s blaming Major League Baseball’s crackdown on foreign substances. The Tampa Bay Rays right-hander said Tuesday he had stopped using sunscreen to aid his grip of the baseball in advance of the new rule and had to adjust his grip on the ball. That led to him feeling a “pop” during Monday night’s outing against the White Sox in Chicago. Now, the hurler is has a partial tear in his U-C-L in his right elbow that may eventually require Tommy John surgery.

Derek Carr is not only reasserting his desire to play for the Raiders, he’s telling teams how much he doesn’t want to play for them. The Las Vegas quarterback said on the first day of mandatory minicamp Tuesday that he’d “probably quit football” if he had to play for another team. “I am a Raider for my entire life.” Carr has been with the Raiders since he was selected in the second round in the 2014 NFL Draft.

The U-S-G-A is doing its best to limit the drama to the golf course this week at the U.S. Open, which kicks off on Thursday at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, California. Budding rivals Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau will not be grouped together for the first two rounds. That’s what a USGA official told ESPN on Tuesday. Koepka will be playing with Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas, while DeChambeau will be playing with the defending US amateur champion, Tyler Strafaci, and Hideki Matsuyama, the reigning Masters champion.
