
LAKERS SOFTBALL DOWNS GRAVES COUNTY
In high school softball yesterday, Calloway County scored four runs in the fourth inning to break open a close game en route to a 7-3 win over Graves County at Mayfield. Addison Hicks and Emerson Grogan enjoyed 2 RBI games, with Kylie Stallings adding a pair of hits as the Lady Lakers improved to 20-8. Caitlyn Powers was the winning pitcher after allowing 3 hits and 2 runs over 4 1/3 innings while walking 1 and striking out eight.
MUSTANGS SCORE LATE TO BEAT MURRAY
McCracken County snapped a 1-1 tie with a 3 run sixth and then tacked on 3 more in the seventh to pick up a 7-2 win at Murray High. Mackenzie Turley was 3 for 3 and drove in a run to pace the Murray offense while Ally Hutchins homered and drove in three to lead the Lady Mustangs. Hutchins was also the winning pitcher, tossing a complete game 4 hitter, giving up no earned runs and striking out 10. Kylie Chapman took the loss for Murray despite walking none and striking out 12 as the Lady Tigers fell to 11-7.

LAKER BASEBALL FALLS AT LYON COUNTY
In high school baseball, Lyon County hammered Calloway County 12-1 in Eddyville. Jackson Shoulders led the Lions with 2 home runs and three RBI’s. The loss dropped the Lakers to 15-12. Murray High had the day off.

RACERS WASHOUT OUT VS MIDDLE TENNESSEE
Murray State baseball hosted Middle Tennessee yesterday at Reagan Field with Mother Nature notching the win after the game was called after three innings due to rain. Middle Tennessee was leading the Racers 2-0 before the stoppage. The game will not count towards the team’s records or player’s stats. The Racers will host Austin Peay for their final series of the regular season. The series will start with a 5 pm game on Thursday and conclude with a doubleheader at 1:00 pm on Friday. The Racers enter the series in sole possession of first place in the OVC with a 1/2 game lead over Southeast Missouri.
WOLF AND DAVIS RECORD 72’S AT NCAA INDIANA REGIONAL
The second day of the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals took place on Tuesday in Noblesville, Indiana. Nick Wolf’s even-par 72 guided a UT Martin squad that combined to shoot 300, bringing their 36-hole total to a 599 which ranks 11th in the team standings. No. 5 ranked Texas shot 9-under in the second round to take a seven-stroke lead over second-place Tennessee. Playing as an individual, Belmont’s Evan Davis carded a one-over par 72 to sit at 147 which is ten shots behind medalist leader, Reid Davenport of Vanderbilt. The final round will be played today.
THREE OVC PLAYERS CLAIM ATHLON HONORS
Three Ohio Valley Conference football players have been named to the Athlon Sports 2021 Spring FCS All-America Team. The players included Jacksonville State senior tight end Trae Barry, JSU sophomore safety Nicario Harper and Austin Peay senior nickelback Kordell Jackson. The trio were among the 29 total players selected to the team which was represented by 19 schools and 10 conferences.
EKU READY TO FACE VOLS IN KNOXVILLE SOFTBALL REGIONAL
Eastern Kentucky will travel to No. 18 Tennessee for the NCAA Regional at 1:30 Friday afternoon on ESPN3. The Colonels earned the OVC’s automatic bid after they defeated Southeast Missouri in the league’s championship game. The other match up in the Knoxville Regional will feature Liberty and James Madison. The Colonels will face either the winner or loser of the Liberty/James Madison game in its second contest of the double elimination regional.
ARENADO HOMERS AGAIN AS CARDINALS SNAP SKID
Nolan Arenado hit a two-run homer in the first in the Cardinals 5-2 win against the Pirates at Busch Stadium. Arenado has gone deep in four straight games. Tommy Edman was 3-for-5 with two RBI for St. Louis, which snapped a three-game skid. John Gant earned the win after allowing two-runs over five and a third. The two-game set concludes tonight with airtime set for 5:50 on WNBS AM and FM.
GRIZZLIES BEGIN PLAYOFFS TONIGHT
The Memphis Grizzlies’ season comes down to tonight, when they host the Spurs in the first Western Conference play-in game. The winner moves on for the chance to become the eight-seed in the playoffs, but will have to visit the winner of Warriors-Lakers. Grayson Allen was upgraded to questionable yesterday and will be a game-time decision after missing the last seven contests with an abdomen injury.
AREA HOCKEY ROUNDUP
The Nashville Predators play game two of their first round Stanley Cup playoff series against the Hurricanes tonight in Raleigh. They lost the opener on Monday, 5-2, thanks to Carolina’s three-goal third period. Following tonight’s action, the team is back on Broadway for the next two games, where they’re expected to fill Bridgestone Arena with over 12,000 fans each time. The Blues face the Avalanche tonight in Colorado in game two of the Stanley Cup First Round. St. Louis dropped game one Monday night.
GAUDIO CHARGED
Former Louisville men’s basketball assistant coach Dino Gaudio was charged with one federal count of attempted extortion against the university yesterday. According to the complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky, Gaudio threatened to release recruiting videos that violate NCAA rules to the media unless school officials paid him 17 months of his salary. He also allegedly said the school violated rules by using graduate managers in practice. The complaint also states that Gaudio responded to news from Louisville head coach Chris Mack informing him and another assistant of their non-renewed contracts with threats to expose improper recruiting tactics on March 17th.
NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
Tigers pitcher Spencer Turnbull has thrown a no hitter against the Mariners in Detroit’s 5-nothing win in Seattle. It is the fifth no hitter of the season and the second time Seattle has been no hit. The right hander finished with nine strikeouts and two walks to throw his first career no-no. Jeimer Candelario homered and drove in two as Detroit has now won seven of nine. Justin Dunn was the tough-luck loser, giving up two runs over five-and-two-thirds. Seattle has lost two-straight.
Baseball’s most recognizable face is headed to the injured list. Mike Trout was placed on the 10-day I-L with a strained right calf, but is expected to miss anywhere from six-to-eight weeks for the Los Angeles Angels. He was injured while rounding the bases on a pop up during Monday night’s 7-4 win over the Cleveland Indians on Monday. The three-time M-V-P is hitting .333 this season with an American League best .624 slugging percentage through Monday.
Miguel Sano homered three times as the Twins erased a 4-nothing deficit to beat the White Sox 5-4 in Minnesota. Jorge Polanco had the walk-off single to drive in the game-winning run in the ninth to seal the win for the Twins. Sano finished with four RBI in the game as Minnesota snapped its two-game losing streak. Both reliever Tyler Duffey and manager Rocco Baldelli were ejected after Duffey threw behind Yermin Mercedes in the top of the seventh.
The Celtics have earned themselves a date with the Brooklyn Nets in the first round. Jayson Tatum scored 50 points as the Celtics defeated the Wizards 118-100 in the seven versus eight play-in game in the Eastern Conference. Bradley Beal had 22 in the loss for Washington, which will travel home to face the Pacers for the final playoff spot in the conference. Indiana earned a shot at the Wizards after dispatching the Hornets 144-117 in the nine versus 10 matchup. Tonight, LeBron James and Stephen Curry will clash again as the Lakers host the Warriors in the Western Conference seven versus eight-play in game. The winner will face the Phoenix Suns in the first round. Also on tap, the Memphis Grizzlies host the San Antonio Spurs in the nine versus 10 battle for the west.
Two teams evened their best-of-seven series on Tuesday with the Penguins and Golden Knights coming out winners. Tristan Jarry made 37 saves to lift Pittsburgh to a 2-1 win over the New York Islanders in the Steel City as they tied their series at one game apiece. Marc-Andre Fleury made 34 saves for Vegas as they beat the Minnesota Wild down on the Strip 3-1 to even their series. The Lightning took a commanding two-games-to-none lead by beating the Panthers 3-1 in Sunrise behind 32 saves from Andrei Vasilevskiy. Tonight, Washington will visit the Bruins in Boston for Game Three, while Carolina and Nashville and St. Louis and Colorado will lock up for Game Two. In the North Division, Winnipeg will visit Edmonton as they kick off their series.
