TIGERS AND LAKERS NOTCH BASEBALL WINS
In high school baseball yesterday, Murray High rallied for three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to defeat Carlisle County 8-3 yesterday at Ty Holland Stadium. Carson Tucker was 3 for 4 with 3 RBI’s to pace the Tiger offense, with Austin Miller adding two RBIs. Tucker also picked up the win in relief with three hitless innings, walking one and striking out two. With the win, Murray is now 12-14 on the season heading into today’s game at St. Mary.

Calloway County went on the road to defeat Grayson County 3-1. The win pushed the Lakers winning streak to five and their record to 16-10 heading into today’s game at Lyon County. In other baseball games yesterday:

CALLOWAY SOFTBALL WINS, MURRAY FALLS AT GRAVES
In high school softball yesterday, Kylie Stallings drove in three runs as Calloway County defeated Christian County 4-1 at Laker Field. Addison Hicks and Carson McReynolds added two hit games for the Lady Lakers who improved to 19-8 as Erica Grogan notched the complete game win, scattering 4 hits, walking one, and striking out 4. Calloway visits Graves County today.

Graves County pushed across three runs in the third and then held off Murray High 4-3 in Mayfield. Layne Latimer was 2 for 3 and drove in all 3 of Murray’s runs, with Mackenzie Turley adding a 2 for 3 day with 2 runs scored. Kylie Chapman took the complete game loss, scattering 3 hits and striking out 9. Gwen Munsell led the Lady Eagles with 3 RBI’s. Murray is now 11-6, and will host McCracken County tonight at 6. RACER FOOTBALL BEGINS SEASON TICKET SALES
Racer Football is readying for the 2021 season by offering a variety of ticket options for year two of the Dean Hood era. New options this fall will be the Racer RV Package and Racer Reserve Infield Tents. General admission season tickets are just $12 per game. Racer Reserve Chairback Seating and Racer Reserve Infield Boxes are also available with kids infant through college getting free admission. All Racers Football season tickets can be purchased by calling the ticket office at 270-809-3000 or by visiting the ticket office at the CFSB Center.

RACERS RANKED 18TH IN FINAL FCS POLL
A day after Sam Houston State beat South Dakota State 23-21 to capture their first FCS national championship, they were voted a unanimous No. 1 in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 on Monday. South Dakota State was second. Three OVC teams were ranked in the final poll. Jacksonville State was ranked 7th, Murray State was tied for 18th, and Austin Peay was ranked 23rd. In addition, SIU finished 8th in the national rankings.

WILDCATS ADD FORMER BULLDOGS GUARD
The guard who led the SEC in assists last season is transferring to Kentucky. Former Georgia point guard Sahvir Wheeler announced yesterday he’s committed to the Wildcats. Wheeler averaged 14 points and nearly seven-and-a-half assists for the Bulldogs last season. UK has landed four transfer players over the last few months.

UK SOFTBALL TO HOST REGIONAL
The Kentucky Softball team will host a regional for the 2021 NCAA Softball Tournament. UK will welcome Notre Dame, Miami University, and Northwestern for the event Friday through Sunday. Kentucky will open the NCAA Tournament on Friday against Northwestern at noon. The game can be seen on ESPN2.

CARDINALS VS PIRATES TONIGHT
The St. Louis Cardinals host the Pirates tonight. John Gant gets the start for St. Louis against Pittsburgh’s JT Brubaker. The Cards have lost three-straight coming in. Airtime is set for 5:50 with the first pitch at 6:45 on WNBS AM and FM.

REDBIRDS HOST BATS TONIGHT AT FULL CAPACITY
The Memphis Redbirds are at home for the first time tonight when they start a six-game set against the Louisville Bats. They enter on the heels of a series split against the Nashville Sounds, which wrapped up their season-opening road trip at 4-and-8. The team announced yesterday that they will return to full capacity at AutoZone Park and that fans will no longer be required to wear masks in the stadium’s outdoor areas.

AREA HOCKEY ROUNDUP
The Nashville Predators fell to the Hurricanes, 5-2, in the opening game of their first-round Stanley Cup playoff series against the Hurricanes Game two in Raleigh is tomorrow night…The St. Louis Blues allowed three third period goals in a 4-1 loss to the Avalanche in game one of the Stanley Cup First Round at Ball Arena. Game two of the series is tomorrow night in Denver.

GRIZZLIES REPORT
The Memphis Grizzlies host the Spurs in the most important game of their season tomorrow. It marks the first Western Conference matchup of the new NBA play-in tournament, which sees the winner play the loser of Lakers-Warriors for the eight-seed. The team announced yesterday that capacity at FedEx Forum will increase to around 40 percent capacity, or about 7,000 fans.

TITANS SIGN ONE, RELEASE TWO
The Tennessee Titans signed former Vanderbilt wide receiver Kalija Lipscomb yesterday while waiving two other players. Lipscomb was invited to the team’s rookie minicamp over the weekend. The 23-year-old went undrafted in 2020 and spent time on the Chiefs’ and Packers’ practice squads. The team let go of wide receiver Rashard Davis and linebacker Davin Bellamy.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
The Celtics will take on the Washington Wizards in Boston as the Eastern Conference hosts the play-in games tonight. The winner of the Celtics and Wizards will advance to take on the number two-seeded Brooklyn Nets in the first round of the playoffs. Meanwhile, the loser will take on the winner of the Charlotte Hornets at the Indiana Pacers. The Western Conference play-in games will be held tomorrow.

Gerrit Cole is setting a Major League record, despite having one of his poorest outings of the season on Monday night. The Yankees right-hander has now struck out 61 batters since his last walk on April 12th, besting a mark set by Milwaukee’s Corbin Burnes earlier this season. However, the seven K’s weren’t enough for Cole, as he allowed five runs on seven hits over five innings of work as New York lost to the Rangers in Texas 5-2.

Albert Pujols’ commute is changing, but he’s staying in the same city. The future Hall of Famer is headed to Chavez Ravine to play for the Los Angeles Dodgers after being released by the Los Angeles Angels earlier this season. The 41-year-old officially signed with the Dodgers on Monday after agreeing to the move over the weekend. Pujols, who has the fifth most homers in baseball history, hit cleanup Monday night for the Dodgers against the Diamondbacks. He ended up driving in his first run with his new club.

Brad Marchand scored the fastest playoff overtime goal for the Bruins in their franchise’s history as they beat the Capitals 4-3 in Washington, DC. Meanwhile, in Raleigh, the Hurricanes got two goals from Jordan Staal as the breezed past the Predators 5-2. Finally, the Avalanche got two goals and an assist from Nathan MacKinnon as they posted three goals in the third period to beat the Blues 4-1 in Denver.

New York horse racing officials are banning trainer Bob Baffert from entering Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit in the Belmont Stakes. They’re also banning any of his horses at Belmont Park or at Saratoga Race Course this summer. The New York Racing Association said it based its decision on the investigation into Medina Spirit’s victory at the Derby. The running of the Belmont takes place June 5th.
