NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
The New York Yankees say that shortstop Gleyber Torres has tested positive for COVID-19. Torres was held out of Wednesday’s game as a precaution, given seven coaches and staff members had tested positive, and his results were pending. He previously dealt with a coronavirus diagnosis, and has been vaccinated, making this another “breakthrough” case. It’s not clear if Torres is showing symptoms, and he remains in quarantine.

Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson’s attorney is denying any talks about settling multiple sexual misconduct lawsuits. Rusty Hardin says his team never approached attorney Tony Buzbee about ending the suits while accusing Buzbee of proposing settlements multiple times. Buzbee told FOX 26 in Houston his clients are not interested in settling while also criticizing the NFL for disrespecting the massage therapists. The women say Watson behaved inappropriately during sessions over the past year. Watson and Hardin have denied wrongdoing. Hardin also suggested Buzbee was trying to extort money from his client.

Udonis Haslem continues to move up a very select NBA list. The Miami Heat forward played his first minutes of the season on Thursday night, marking his 18th season with the club. He still trails Dirk Nowitzki’s record, who spent his entire 21-season career in Dallas with the Mavericks. Stephen Curry is the only other active NBAer with more than ten seasons with a single club — he’s been with Golden State his entire 12-year career. His night against the Philadelphia 76ers didn’t last long, however, as he played just three minutes before picking up two technical fouls and getting ejected.

Alex Rodriguez is on the verge of becoming the owner of the Minnesota Timberwolves and the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx. According to USA Today, the former Major Leaguer and tech billionaire Marc Lore have reached an agreement to buy the teams from owner Glen Taylor for one-point-five billion dollars. The two sides negotiated exclusively for 30 days, but that window closed May 10th. Rodriguez and Lore would have a 50-50 stake in the deal.

The Avalanche scored five times in the second period as they crushed the Kings 5-1 in Denver. With the win, they claimed the Presidents’ Trophy for most points in the NHL’s regular season. Tyson Jost scored twice in the second. Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, Joonas Donskoi, and Andre Burakovsky also scored for the Avalanche. Colorado also claimed the West Division with the win by virtue of a tiebreaker over the Vegas Golden Knights at 82 points. Sean Walker scored the lone goal for the Kings.
