HOUSDEN POWERS CALLOWAY PAST MURRAY
In high school softball yesterday, Isabel Housden was 3 for 3 with an RBI at the plate and pitched a complete game in the circle as Calloway County defeated Murray High 4-3 at Laker Field. Housden gave up only two hits while walking one and striking out 10 as Calloway improved to 15-6 in avenging a 2-1 loss to Murray on April 19. Kylie Chapman took the loss for the Lady Tigers who slipped to 8-5. In other softball games:

TURNER LEADS LAKERS OVER VIKINGS
In high school baseball games yesterday, Calloway County pushed across five funs in the second inning and went on to an 8-3 win over St. Mary in Paducah. Cadwell Turner led the Laker offense with 3 hits including a home run while driving in three. Colby White earned the win with 4 innings of two hit ball while giving up no earned runs as the Lakers improved to 12-10.

TIGERS HAMMER CARDINALS
Murray High scored two runs in each of the first four innings as the Tigers coasted to a 12-5 win at Mayfield. Nick Holcomb led Murray at the plate with a 3 for 4 day while Kade Gibson drove in three runs and Carson Tucker two. Caden Kelly got the win but Andrew Orr pitched 3 2/3 of scoreless ball to push the Tigers record to 11-11. In other baseball games:

FLOYD NAMED FCS ALL-AMERICAN
Murray State’s Marcis Floyd was named to the Stats Perform FCS All-America Team. Playing cornerback, Floyd racked up 32 tackles, 3 interceptions, 9 pass breakups and 2 forced fumbles. The sophomore from Louisville’s DuPont Manual High School, was part of a group of 9 players who played in the Ohio Valley Conference spring season to receive the All-America honor. Floyd was named to the second team. The first-team picks were Jacksonville State tight end Trae Barry and safety Nicario Harper, Austin Peay nickelback Kordell Jackson and Tennessee State kicker Antonio Zita. The second-team picks were Austin Peay wide receiver DeAngelo Wilson, UT Martin tight end Rodney Williams, Jacksonville State offensive lineman Tylan Grable, and Jacksonville State defensive end DJ Coleman.

PERKINS AND GARDNER CLAIM WEEKLY OVC HONORS
Murray State’s Ryan Perkins is the OVC Baseball Co-Player of the Week. In four games last week Perkins hit .462 with five runs, two doubles, a triple, home run, two walks, 1.000 slugging percentage and .533 on-base percentage as Murray State won all four of its games. Perkins shared the award with Ed Johnson of Tennessee Tech. The Racers Sam Gardner is the OVC Pitcher of the Week. Gardner struck out seven of the first nine batters he faced in setting the tone in an 11-0 victory over UT Martin. The Racers return to action today for a 5 pm home game against Southern Illinois.

GILMORE AND JAMES SWEEP OVC WEEKLY HONORS
Murray State softball swept the weekly conference awards. The Racers Sierra Gilmore is OVC Softball Player of the Week. Gilmore hit .625 with four runs scored and six RBI in the series sweep of Morehead State. Teammate Hannah James is the OVC Pitcher of the Week. James made an appearance in all three wins against Morehead State last week. She came in relief in the first game, pitching two and two-third scoreless innings. She followed that up with five shutout innings in the second game. In the finale, she carried a no-hit bid into the seventh recording 13 strikeouts while setting a new school single-season strikeout record with 158.

LADY LAKER BASKETBALL CAMP DATES ARE SET
Calloway County Lady Laker Basketball Camp will be held from 9 am to 11 am from May 18 through the 21 at Calloway County High School. The camp is for upcoming kindergarten through 7th graders and the cost $40 Campers may register the day of camp at the high school. Additionally, Calloway County Lady Lakers basketball will be selling old uniforms May 20 and 21 from 10:30 to 11:30 am at the high school Jerseys will cost $10 and shorts will cost $5.

MEMPHIS DOWNS PELICANS
The Memphis Grizzlies almost let things get too close as they finish off the Pelicans 115-110. Dillon Brooks scores 23 while Ja Morant added 12 points and 12 assists. Memphis is still in the West’s 9th spot with four games left to go.

CARDINALS RESUME PLAY AT MILWAUKEE
The Cardinals visit the Brewers tonight for the start of a three-game set. Kwang Hyun Kim gets the nod for St. Louis against Milwaukee’s Freddy Peralta. The Cards are coming off a three-game sweep of the Rockies over the weekend. Airtime is set for 5:45 on WNBS AM and FM with first pitch set for 6:40.

AREA HOCKEY ROUNDUP
The Nashville Predators bested Carolina 5-0. Justin Faulk scored 46 seconds into overtime to give the Blues a 2-1 win against Kings at the Staples Center. Tyler Bozak found the back of the net in the third period for St. Louis and Jordan Binnington made 26 saves in the victory. The Blues wrap up the regular season with two home games against the Wild, beginning tomorrow night.

REDBIRDS VS SOUNDS TONIGHT
The Memphis Redbirds travel to Nashville for a 6-game series starting tonight. This comes off the heels of a much needed first win of the season on Sunday against the Durham Bulls. Just after the Redbirds lost the first five games to begin the season.

TODD NAMED HEAD WOMEN’S COACH FOR EKU HOOPS
Eastern Kentucky University alum Greg Todd was named the new women’s basketball head coach at EKU. Todd most recently served as the women’s basketball head coach at Morehead State. He led the Eagles to three straight 20-plus win seasons from 2016 to 2019 with two WNIT appearances. From 2006 to 2014, Todd was the head coach at Transylvania University where he led the team to four conference championships and three NCAA tournament appearances.

FULL CAPACITY ALLOWED FOR TENNESSEE VOLS BASEBALL
Full capacity will be allowed when the UT baseball team hosts Arkansas this weekend. Athletics Director Danny White made the announcement of increased capacity for games at Lindsey Nelson Field yesterday. The Vols will face the Razorbacks in a three-game series starting on Friday. UT will play its final regular season home game against Belmont on Tuesday, May 18th.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
Russell Westbrook is now alone atop the NBA’s all-time triple-double list. The Washington guard surpassed Oscar Robertson on Monday night, posting a stat line of 28 points, 21 assists and 13 rebounds as Wizards fell to the Hawks 125-124 in Atlanta. It is his 182nd career triple-double, breaking a tie with the Big O. It’s Westbrook’s fifth-straight game with a triple-double.

One of the Boston Celtics’ all stars will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ligament in his left, non-shooting wrist. According to E-S-P-N, Jaylen Brown will require surgery on the injury, which was discovered over this weekend. Brown averaged a career-high 24.7 points per game this season.

New York Mets ace pitcher Jacob deGrom is going on the injured list, after exiting Sunday’s start with tightness in his right side. An MRI showed no significant damage so the hope is rest can help deGrom deal with the issue. The right-hander is 3-and-2 this season with an 0.68 E-R-A, which is good enough to lead baseball.

Tim Tebow is on track for a return to football. NFL Network reports the Jacksonville Jaguars are planning to sign the former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback as a tight end. The move would reunite Tebow with head coach Urban Meyer after their days at Florida. The 33-year-old last played in an NFL game with the New York Jets in 2012 before a brief stint in minor league baseball. It’s expected to be a one-year deal.

Medina Spirit is on its way to Baltimore to run the Preakness Stakes, despite the cloud of controversy that surrounds the horse. The Kentucky Derby winner is under suspicion of doping following a failed drug test following the race at Churchill Downs. However, trainer Bob Baffert won’t be at Pimlico Race Course, saying he doesn’t want to serve as a distraction. The Preakness will be held Saturday. The post draw will be held Tuesday.
