Murray State Hall of Fame men’s basketball coach Cal Luther died Saturday at age 93. In his 16 seasons as MSU head basketball coach, Luther piled up 241 wins, second only to Carlisle Cutchin at MSU. He guided his teams to three OVC titles and finished as the league runner-up or champion five consecutive seasons from 1967 to 1971. He received OVC Coach of the Year honors in 1964 and 1969. Luther also coached at DePauw in Indiana and Longwood in Virginia before beginning a 9-year stint at UT Martin. While there he was named OVC Coach of the Year in 1996 after leading the program to its first OVC winning season. He became the only coach to win Coach of the Year honors at two different OVC institutions. He was inducted into the MSU Hall of Fame in 1986 and UT Martin Hall of Fame in 2017.

Churchill Downs is suspending trainer Bob Baffert and Medina Spirit could be disqualified from this year’s Kentucky Derby win. The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission notified Baffert that Medina Spirit returned a positive drug test after the race. Baffert says he was told the horse tested positive for betamethasone. According to a statement from Churchill Downs, if the findings are upheld, Medina Spirit’s win will be invalidated and Mandaloun will be declared the winner.
