RACER SOFTBALL HOSTS MOREHEAD ON SENIOR NIGHT
Murray State softball will wrap up the 2021 campaign with one final home series as they are set to host Morehead State in a three game set. The series will kick off tonight at 6 in a game that will also serve as Senior Night with recognition taking place before the first pitch. The pregame ceremony will recognize Jenna Bleiberg, Taylor Makowsky, Lexi Jones, and 2020 seniors Kristen Bialek and Ellison Barrett. Racer Field will then see its final action of the year with a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm. The Saturday games will be streamed live on ESPN+, while all three contests will have live stats on goracers.com.
RACER BASEBALL ALTERS WEEKEND SCHEDULE
Due to inclement weather expected on Saturday, Murray State baseball has rearranged their weekend series with UT Martin to a doubleheader today beginning at 2 pm and single game Saturday at a time to be announced. The Racers enter the day 23-20 overall and 12-9 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Skyhawks come in 15-23 overall and 7-11 in the OVC.
VOLLEYBALL SIGNEE NAMED MARYLAND PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Brooke Watts has been named the Gatorade State Volleyball Player of the Year for Maryland. Watts is an incoming member of Murray State Volleyball team as a member of its 2021 signing class. Watts will be an outside hitter for Murray State. She recorded 76 kills, 31 digs and five service aces, leading the Wildcats to a 5-0 record during a pandemic-shortened season and set a new school record with 985 career kills. Watts led Arundel to the program’s first-ever Class 4A state championship as a junior, amassing a school-record 324 kills.
ITS OFFICIAL: UK HIRES TWO ASSISTANTS
Kentucky has added former Illinois assistants Orlando Antigua and Ron Coleman to the coaching staff. Antigua served five years with the Wildcats before becoming head coach at South Florida for 2½ seasons. He will be an associate coach while Coleman will be an assistant.
METS WALK AWAY FROM CARDINALS
Cardinal pitchers walked 11 batters in a 4-1 loss to the Mets at Busch Stadium. John Gant allowed six base on balls and two runs, one earned, in four and a third for the loss. Harrison Bader drove in the lone run for St. Louis, which dropped two of three in the series. The Cards host the Rockies tonight in a 7:15 game, with airtime set for 6:20 on WNBS AM and FM.
PUJOLS DFA’D BY ANGELS
The Los Angeles Angels are moving on from legendary first baseman and designated hitter Albert Pujols. The team designated him for assignment in the final year of a 10-year, 240-million-dollar deal that lured him away from the Cardinals after the 2011 World Series title. Pujols won three MVP awards and won the National League’s “Decade Triple Crown” while with St. Louis from 2001-2011.
MEMPHIS FALLS AT DETROIT
The Grizzlies faced the Pistons in Detroit last night, but lost to the worst team in the East, 111-97. Ja Morant’s 20 points were the most of anyone in a game that featured balanced scoring attacks by both teams. With six games left in the regular season, the Grizzlies are ninth in the West, leading the Spurs by a game and a half and the Pelicans by three games. Next up is a trip to Tampa tomorrow to face the Raptors.
TITANS MAKE MOVES
The Tennessee Titans made four roster moves yesterday, headlined by the signing of former Falcons running back Brian Hill. The 25-year-old was Atlanta’s second-leading rusher the past two years, and will compete to be the second string behind Derrick Henry. The team also added defensive back Greg Mabin and linebacker Justin March, while cutting cornerback Kareem Orr.
BLUES CAN CLINCH WIN A WIN
The St. Louis Blues look to clinch a playoff spot tonight when they visit the Vegas Golden Knights. St. Louis can earn a postseason bid by collecting just one more point than the Los Angeles Kings. If the Blues beat the Golden Knights, they need the Kings to lose in any fashion. If St. Louis loses in overtime or a shootout, the Kings must lose in regulation.
NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
Jose Altuve celebrated his 31st birthday in style, hitting the game-deciding three-run homer as the Astros beat the Yankees 7-4 at Yankee Stadium. Yordan Alvarez hit a pair of solo homers and Martin .Maldonado hit a two-run shot in the ninth. Andre Scrubb got the win in relief as Ryan Pressly picked up his fifth save. Giancarlo Stanton extended his hitting streak to 12 with a homer in the third.
One of the Brooklyn Nets’ Big Three says he believes he’ll be back before the start of the playoffs. James Harden, who has missed the last month with a hamstring strain, says he’s “very confident” he’ll be back before the postseason. “We’re just taking it one day at a time,” he said Thursday. The Nets have just a handful of games left before the playoffs, which start May 22nd. The former league M-V-P didn’t rule out playing on the team’s current road trip.
The New York Rangers are feeling the wrath of the N-H-L’s head offices. The team is being fined a whopping 250-thousand dollars after they called for the Department of Player Safety head George Parros to be fired this week. The club was infuriated after the league refused to suspend Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson following his attacks on Pavel Buchnevich and Artemi Panarin on Monday night. That led to a series of fights in the first period of Wednesday night’s game.
Phil Mickelson stormed to the front of the pack at the Wells Fargo Championship on Thursday, firing a seven-under 64 in the first round at Quail Hollow in Charlotte. Lefty has a two-shot lead over Kyoung-Hoon Lee and Keegan Bradley, both of whom shot a five-under 66. Tommy Fleetwood leads a pack at four-under. Defending champion Max Homa shot a six-over 77.
