CALLOWAY SOFTBALL CLAIMS KENTUCKY 2A TITLE
Calloway County defeated Warren East 4-2 on Saturday in the title game of the Kentucky 2A Championships in Owensboro. Bailee Grogan was 2 for 2 with a run scored to lead the offense, while Izzy Housden scattered 10 hits, walked 3, and struck out 5 to pick up the win in the inaugural event for softball. Also on Saturday, Lyon County defeated Owensboro Catholic 10-9 to win the Kentucky All-A Classic Softball Championship becoming the first Region 2 team to win the title since Livingston Central in 2014. Paducah Tilghman won the Kentucky 2A Baseball State Championship with a 10-7 win over Christian Academy of Louisville

RACER SOFTBALL TAKES 2 FROM EIU
Murray State softball opened a seven-game road trip yesterday with a doubleheader sweep of Eastern Illinois, winning 6-1 and 2-1. In the opener, Sierra Gilmore homered and drove in three runs, making a winner of Hannah James who went the distance with a four-hitter to improve to 7-8 on the season. In the nightcap, Gilmore drove in the Racers only runs of the game, making a winner of Jenna Veber who tossed four innings of scoreless relief to improve to 7-12. Now back on track to make the OVC Tournament, the Racers improved to 16-11 in the OVC and 19-24 overall as they go for the three game series sweep today in Charleston.

SIUE LEADS IN ALABAMA; RACERS NINTH
SIUE shot a 283 for the lead after Day One of the OVC Men’s Golf Championship at The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. UT Martin is fourth at 286. Murray State shot 307 and was in ninth place after the opening round. In the individual race, there is a three-way tie atop the leaderboard with Morehead State’s Joe Muschong, SIUE’s Zak Butt, and UT Martin’s Jack Story tied after a round of 68. Avery Edwards led the Racers with a 4-over-par 76 and a spot in 27th place, while Austin Knight was in 32nd place after a 77. The OVC Men’s Golf Championship will continue with 18 holes of second round action today.

RACER BASEBALL SWEEPS EKU
The Murray State baseball team defeated Eastern Kentucky 7-3 on Saturday night to complete a three game series sweep after winning Friday’s doubleheader. The Racers improved to 21-16 overall and in second place at 11-7 in the OVC. The Racers play a midweek game against SIU at 5 pm on Tuesday.

RACER TENNIS FALLS IN OVC SEMIFINALS
The Murray State women’s tennis team saw its season come to a close Saturday when they fell to Austin Peay 4-0 in the OVC Tournament semifinals at the Evansville Tennis Center. The Racers finished the year at 8-10 overall after posting a 4-3 OVC record in regular-season action. Austin Peay claimed the OVC women’s title with a 4-3 win over Southeast Missouri, while Belmont took the men’s title with a 4-3 win over Tennessee Tech.

JSU AND SIU ADVANCE IN FCS PLAYOFFS
In the FCS playoffs on Saturday, Jacksonville State and SIU advanced with opening round wins. The Gamecocks defeated Davidson 49-14, while the Salukis upset Weber State 34-31. 10-2 Jacksonville State will host 6-0 Delaware in round two, while 6-3 SIU visits 6-1 South Dakota State.

UK WINS NCAA VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
Kentucky won its first NCAA Volleyball national championship with a four-set win over Texas on Saturday. The scores were 20-25, 25-18, 25-23, and 25-22. The Wildcats ended the season 24-1.

MORANT SIZZLES AS MEMPHIS DOWNS PORTLAND
Ja Morant scored 28 points to lead the Grizzlies to a 120-113 win over the Trail Blazers in Portland. Jonas Valanciunas added 21 points and 10 rebounds for Memphis, which swept the two games in Portland. The Grizz have won four of their last six and make the final stop on their seven-game road trip tonight against the Nuggets in Denver.

CARDINALS SWEEP REDS
The St. Louis Cardinals finished off a three-game sweep with a 5-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Outfielder Tyler O’Neill led St. Louis’ offense with two home runs while Dylan Carlson had three hits. Cardinals’ starter Jack Flaherty pitched seven strong innings with six strikeouts to get his fourth win of the year. The Cardinals will continue their homestand tonight when they host the Phillies with first pitch at 6:45, with airtime at 5:50 on WNBS AM and FM.

AREA HOCKEY ROUNDUP
The Nashville Predators begin a two-game home series with the Panthers tonight. They also play tomorrow night in Nashville. Nashville is fourth in the Central. The St. Louis Blues will wrap up their season series with the Colorado Avalanche tonight at the Enterprise Center. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m. The Blues game with the Minnesota Wild originally scheduled for tonight has been moved to April 29th.

TITANS PREP FOR NFL DRAFT
The Titans are getting ready for this week’s NFL Draft. The first round takes place Thursday night in Cleveland, with the seven-round draft lasting three days in all. Tennessee has the 22nd overall selection in the first round, right after the Colts and just ahead of the Jets.

VOLS CONCLUDE SPRING PRACTICE
UT’s spring football practices are over. The Volunteers wrapped up their first spring under new head coach Josh Heupel with the Orange and White Game on Saturday. Thousands of fans attended the scrimmage at Neyland Stadium. The Orange team beat the White team, 42-37.

VANDY MEN TAKE OVC TITLE
The Vanderbilt men’s golf team is celebrating after winning the SEC Championship on Sunday in Georgia. The Commodores defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks in match play thanks to William Moll’s putt for par on the 18th hole. The win was the first SEC Title for Vanderbilt since 2017. The Commodores will next play in the NCAA Regionals next month.

NASHVILLE SC STILL WINLESS
Nashville SC is still looking for its first win of the MLS season. They fell behind 2-nil before scoring a pair of goals to pull out a 2-2 draw against Montreal in Saturday’s home opener at Nissan Stadium. Nashville SC has played two draws and will host Inter Miami next.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
Brad Keselowski surged to the front on the final lap to take the Geico 500 at Talladega. It was his first win of the season. William Byron finished second and Michael McDowell third. For Keselowski, it was his sixth career win at Talladega and his 35th on the NASCAR circuit.

Madison Bumgarner threw seven innings of no-hit ball as the D’backs blanked the Braves 7-0 in the second game of a doubleheader at Atlanta. It won’t count as a no-hitter because it wasn’t a nine-inning game. Zac Gallen threw a one-hitter as Arizona won the opener, 5-0.

Kevin Durant scored 33 points in his return to the lineup as the Nets knocked off the Suns 128-119 in Brooklyn. Durant missed the last three games with a thigh bruise. The Nets lead the 76ers by a game-and-a-half atop the East. Phoenix is two games behind Utah in the West.

A Hall of Fame coach is leaving her post after 21 years. Kim Mulkey, who won three national championships at Baylor, is headed for Baton Rouge, where she’ll be the new women’s basketball coach at LSU. The Tickfaw, Louisiana, native will be formally introduced today.

The team of Mark Leishman and Cameron Smith won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in a playoff. They defeated Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel on the first extra hole at TPC of Louisiana. Both pairs finished regulation at 20-under.

Central Michigan quarterback John Keller is in serious condition after being shot at a party Saturday night. Police say a fight broke out near the Mt. Pleasant campus before someone went to a car to get a gun and started firing. Another student was also shot, but is stable.
