KNIGHT THE MEDALIST, RACERS SECOND AT BIG BLUE INVITE
Murray State’s Austin Knight claimed medalist honors and UT Martin rallied past the Racers for the team title at the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate in Nashville. Heading into Tuesday’s final round with a six-shot lead on second place UT Martin, the Racers posted a final round 290 for an 857, but the Skyhawks 283 gave them a one shot win at 856. Knight’s final round of 71 gave him a 210, and a one-shot win over Belmont’s Evan Davis and Detroit Mercy’s Scott Sparks. Avery Edwards of Murray State finished in 13th place at 215. The Racers next event will be the OVC Championship, beginning April 25 in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
TUESDAY’S HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL SCORES
Graves County used a five-run top of the seventh to take the lead, and then held off a three run rally in the bottom of the innning for a 7-6 win over Calloway County. Cadwell Turner led the Laker offense with two hits and three runs scored while Isaac Ward drove in two runs. Turner took the loss after tossing 3 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs on no hits while striking out 8. In other games:

RACERS DROP 3 SPOTS IN STATS POLL
After losing the OVC title game to Jacksonville State on Sunday, Murray State slipped from 17th to 20th in the STATS Perform FCS Top-25 poll. The Gamecocks improved from 10th to 9th. James Madison is first, followed by North Dakota State, Weber State, South Dakota State, and Sam Houston. SIU dropped from 16th to 18th.
LOUISVILLE LANDS FLORIDA TRANSFER
Noah Locke is transferring from Florida to Louisville. Locke shot 40% from three-point range in three seasons at the University of Florida and ranks among the Gators’ career top 10 in three-pointers. A 6-3, 207-pound guard from Baltimore, Locke averaged 10.6 points and 2.4 rebounds per game as a junior last season and his 217 career three-point field goals ranks ninth in Florida history.
CARDINALS HAMMER NATS TO EVEN SERIES
Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado, and Matt Carpenter all homered as the Cardinals trounced the Nationals 14-3 at Busch Stadium. Justin Williams went two for four with three RBIs for St. Louis. Jack Flaherty got the win after tossing five-innings of one run ball. The three-game series wraps up today with airtime at 11:20 this morning on WNBS.
AREA HOCKEY ROUNDUP
The Nashville Predators hammered the Lightning 7-2 for their 11th win in their last 13 games. Viktor Arvidsson had two goals and an assist, while Roman Josi scored a goal and dished out two assists for Nashville. The Blues host the Avalanche tonight. St. Louis enters the game on a three-game winning streak and back in the final playoff spot in the West Division.
MEMPHIS HOSTS DALLAS TONIGHT
The Memphis Grizzlies play the Dallas Mavericks tonight to conclude a three-game homestand. It is an important game for both teams as they try to reach the sixth slot in the Western Conference and avoid the play-in tourney for teams slotted seven-through-10. The Mavs are currently seventh with a 29-and-24 record, while Memphis is eighth at 27-and-25.
GEORGE INTRODUCED AS TSU FOOTBALL COACH
Tennessee State president Glenda Glover says hiring Eddie George as the football coach is the “right choice and investment” for the resources he will bring to the university. George played nine years in the NFL and selected to four Pro Bowls, but has no coaching experience. Glover made the first call to George to measure his interest.
SMITH TO RIDE IN KENTUCKY DERBY
“Money” Mike Smith has a mount for the Kentucky Derby. The Hall of Fame jockey will ride Midnight Bourbon in the May 1st race at Churchill Downs. Smith has two Derby victories, including 2018 with Triple Crown winner Justify.
VOLS RELEASE INFO ON SPRING GAME
UT’s first Orange and White spring game under new head coach Josh Heupel [[ Hi-pul ]] is set for the afternoon of Saturday, April 24th. Vols fans will be spaced out using every other row and face masks will also be required. Parking areas will open at ten o’clock in the morning and the gates to Neyland Stadium will open at 2:30. The scrimmage will start at 4 o’clock.
MEMPHIS FOOTBALL FILLS VACANCIES
Memphis football coach Ryan Silverfield is promoting from within to fill two vacancies on his staff. Brad Salem is moving from senior offensive consultant to tight ends coach. David Glidden, who coached tight ends last season, will coach wide receivers. Charles Bankins has been hired as the special teams coordinator, which became vacant when Drew Svoboda left for a position on the Alabama staff.
NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
Adam Duvall went 4-for-5 with two home runs and seven RBI against his former team as the Marlins beat the Braves 14-8 at Atlanta. The Marlins signed Duvall after he hit five home runs in nine games against them last year for Atlanta. He spent three years with the Braves.
Players from the Seahawks, Broncos and Buccaneers are choosing to skip voluntary offseason workouts that begin next week. They cited rising COVID-19 positivity rates in their area and the NFL’s lack of adequate protocols. The Seahawks say it’s uncomfortable, but necessary.
The names of Deshaun Watson’s accusers will be disclosed. Attorney Tony Buzbee says his law firm will amend all of the suits filed against the Texans quarterback to include names of the plaintiffs. Watson’s lawyer tells NFL Network one of the 22 suits has been dropped.
The celebration is on in Waco. Hundreds of Baylor fans lined the streets of downtown last night to catch a glimpse of the men’s NCAA Tournament champions. The Bears were honored with a parade. Baylor beat Gonzaga 86-70 earlier this month to claim its first national title.
A day after Minnesota’s three sports teams postponed games, the Timberwolves and Twins both played at home on Tuesday. The T’wolves were trounced 127-97 by the Nets, while the Twins lost 4-2 to the Red Sox. The Twins and Red Sox play a doubleheader today.
