AUSTIN PEAY SWEEPS RACER VOLLEYBALL
The Murray State volleyball team was swept by Austin Peay in three sets last in Clarksville, Tennessee, falling to 4-6 in conference play. The scores were 25-18, 25-18, 25-15. The Racers were in every set early but saw the Governors using runs to pull away from the midpoint of each frame. For the Racers, Jayla Holcombe finished with 10 kills, Callie Anderton tallied 19 assists, and while Becca Fernandez picked up 10 digs. The Racers host Eastern Illinois this Sunday and Monday.

RACER MEN FOURTH AFTER ROUND ONE OF BENBOW INVITE
The Murray State men’s golf team shot 312 for a spot in fourth place after the first round of the Don Benbow Invitational at Jacksonville Beach Golf Club in Florida. The Racers Quinn Eaton was in ninth place after a 6-over par 77 while Avery Edwards and Connor Coombs shared 12th place with 78’s and Austin Knight’s 79 was good for a spot in 20th place. Drexel is the first round leader at 300. The 36-hole event ends today.

RACER WOMEN 10TH AFTER TWO ROUNDS OF UNF EVENT
After a round of 316 yesterday morning, the Murray State women’s golf team shaved 12 shots and carded an afternoon round of 304 to get a share of 10th place at the UNF Collegiate in Jacksonville, Florida. At 620, the Racers are 32 shots behind first place North Florida at 588. MSU’s Raeshya Surendran has a spot in 18th place at 150 with Ana Garcia Picchi in 20th place at 151. The final round will be played today.

RACER TENNIS FALLS TO LA TECH
Murray State tennis fell 5-2 to Louisiana Tech on Monday at Purcell Courts. Sara Loncarevic also achieved a significant career milestone on Monday, surpassing 100 combined career victories across singles and doubles play. The fifth-year senior now has 58 singles wins and 43 doubles wins to put her career win total at 101 matches. The 2-6 Racers will host Lipscomb on Saturday and Western Kentucky on Sunday.

AREA COLLEGE TOURNEY ROUNDUP
Louisville is seeded seventh in the ACC Tourney, which begins today in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Cardinals will meet the winner of today’s game between Boston College and Duke in the second round tomorrow. Louisville checks in with an 8-and-5 ACC record. Elsewhere in college basketball, Middle Tennessee State is advancing in the Conference USA Tournament without taking the floor. C-USA cancelled its first-round game with Florida International, which has contact tracing issues. The Blue Raiders will play North Texas tomorrow night. The SEC Basketball Tournament in Nashville tips off tomorrow with Vanderbilt facing Texas A&M.

CARDS TIE MARLINS
The Cardinals played to a 7-7 tie against the Marlins in Jupiter, Florida. Tyler O’Neill smacked a three-run double for St. Louis, while Dylan Carlson and Delvin Perez each drove in a pair. The Cards visit the Mets today.

MSU RIFLE ADDS TWO
Murray State rifle has announced the addition of John Blanton of West Point, Mississippi and Andrew Duryea of Birmingham, Alabama for the 2021-2022 season. Blanton has won multiple medals at both the state and national level. Duryea is a four-time Junior Olympic qualifier in smallbore and air rifle and a two-time qualifier in air pistol. The pair will join Zach Jackson of Madison, West Virginia as the three members of MSU’s rifles 2020-21 recruiting class.

GRIZZLIES RETURN TO THE FLOOR WEDNESDAY
The Grizzlies’ NBA All-Star break ends tomorrow when they host the Washington Wizards. Memphis went 3-and-4 in its last seven games. The Grizzles are 16-and-16 overall, which is 10th in the Western Conference.

AREA HOCKEY ROUNDUP
The Blues fell 3-2 to the Sharks in overtime in San Jose. The Blues finished their six-game road trip 4-0-and-2. St. Louis returns home to face the Golden Knights Friday. The Nashville Predators play the Hurricanes tonight and Thursday in Raleigh.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
Kansas is cutting ties with head football coach Les Miles. The two sides have mutually agreed to part ways. The move comes just days after Miles was placed on administrative leave amid allegations of inappropriate behavior toward female students in 2013 while at LSU.

The Cowboys are committing to quarterback Dak Prescott long-term. ESPN reports he’s agreed to a four-year deal with Dallas worth up to 160-million dollars. It includes a record 126-million guaranteed. Prescott suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week Five of last season.

The Dolphins are adding a former first-round pick. ESPN reports Miami has agreed to acquire offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson and a seventh-round draft pick next year from the Titans for a seventh-rounder this year. Wilson was the 29th overall pick in 2020, but played just four snaps.

With the start of the new league year not far off, teams are placing franchise tags on their key players. ESPN reports the Jets have slapped the franchise tag on safety Marcus Maye. The Washington Football Team also tagged right guard Brandon Scherff for the second straight year.

Gonzaga is still number-one, while Baylor is back up to number-two in the latest Coaches’ Poll. The Bulldogs received all 31 first-place votes. Illinois is now third, with Michigan fourth and Alabama fifth. Iowa is sixth, followed by Houston, Arkansas, West Virginia and Ohio State.

Major League Baseball is remembering former pitcher Rheal Cormier [[ ree-ALL CORE-me-aye ]]. The left-hander reportedly passed away from pancreatic cancer at age 53. The Canadian-native spent 16 seasons in the majors with the Phillies, Cardinals, Red Sox, Reds, and Expos.
