TIGERS DOWN LAKER BOYS IN OT
Quanie Mccallister scored 16 points, and Trey Boggess added 13 as Murray High edged Calloway County 52-47 in overtime last night in a Murray Bank Crosstown Classic matchup at Jeffrey Gymnasium. The Tigers led by as many as 12 in the first half before the Lakers stormed back to take a 33-31 lead with a 17-6 third quarter. Deadlocked at 43 at the end of regulation, the Tigers outscored the Lakers 9 to 4 in overtime to secure the win. Matthew Ray was a beast on the glass for Calloway County with 14 points and 16 rebounds, with Evan Garrison chipping in with 11 points. With the win, Murray improves to 12-6 heading into tonight’s girls/boys doubleheader at Marshall County. Coverage begins tonight at 5:30 on WNBS AM and FM. The 6-10 Lakers are off until Friday night’s home game with Whitesville Trinity. The 14-5 Calloway County girls play at 9-9 Christian Fellowship tonight at 6. Coverage begins at 5:45 on 104.5 WBZB.

RACER VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS
Murray State volleyball completed the weekend sweep of UT Martin with a 3-0 win on Monday afternoon in Murray. MSU won a marathon of a first set in extra points, dominated the second set and came from behind to pull out the straight sets victory. Freshman Jayla Holcombe was on fire tonight, collecting a career-high 26 kills and hit .444, adding three blocks and five digs. Callie Anderton tallied 48 assists while Becca Fernandez notched 23 digs. The Racers improve to 4-4 on the year and will return to action at Austin Peay on Sunday and Monday.

SURENDRAN LEADS IN SOUTH CAROLINA, RACERS FOURTH
Murray State’s Raeshya Surendran carded a second round 68, a day after a 69 at the Kiawah Island Classic in South Carolina for a a three-shot lead on Dallas Baptist’s Faith DeLaGarza heading into today’s final round. The Racers sit in fourth place in the field of 41 teams at 591, with Dallas Baptist the runaway leader at 569. The Racers Payton Carter has a spot in sixth place at 144.

RACERS 10TH, EDWARDS 11TH IN MISSISSIPPI EVENT
Avery Edwards leads the Murray State men’s golf team with a spot in 11th place after 36 holes of the Gulf Coast Collegiate at the Diamondhead Country Club in Mississippi. Edwards had scores of 70-79 with the final 18 to be played Today. The Racers are sitting in 10th place in the 12 team field at 627, with Southeastern Louisiana and UT Martin tied for the lead at 589.

RACERS COMPETE IN OVC CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP
The Murray State men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the Ohio Valley Conference Championship Monday at Weakley Park in Clarksville, Tennessee. The Racer women placed fifth, while the men’s team came home with a ninth place finish. The Eastern Illinois men and Eastern Kentucky women’s team ran to victories in the event.

RACER BASEBALL GAME MOVED TO MURRAY
Due to the weather issues, Murray State will now host Arkansas State in baseball at 3 pm today. The game was originally scheduled for a 5 pm start in Jonesboro. Arkansas State and Murray State have agreed to flip their home-and-home series as the Racers will now travel to Jonesboro March 23.

RACER SOCCER PLAYS SEASON OPENER AT MOREHEAD
Murray State soccer will open the 2020-21 campaign today in a 2 pm central match at Morehead State. Today begins what will be a ten-game conference-only schedule due to COVID-19 postponing the fall season to the spring. The match will be streamed on ESPN+ with live stats coverage available on goracers.com.

CATS AT OLE MISS TONIGHT
Kentucky will play tonight at Ole Miss in a SEC contest. The Wildcats had their three-game winning streak halted Saturday with a home loss to Florida. Kentucky is 8-and-14 with a 7-and-8 conference mark. The Wildcats close out the season Saturday hosting South Carolina

WILLIAMS OUT FOR LOUISVILLE
Cardinals forward/center Malik Williams re-injured his right foot in the second half at Duke and will be sidelined for 4-6 weeks. The injury will not require surgery. The Cardinals’ team co-captain and the most experienced returnee for UofL, Williams has played in the last three games after missing Louisville’s first 15 games after he developed a fracture in the fifth metatarsal of his right foot and had surgery to repair the break on November 11. Louisville will play tomorrow night at number-19 Virginia Tech in a ACC matchup.

WAINO ON THE HILL TODAY FOR ST. LOUIS
The St. Louis Cardinals visit the Marlins today in Grapefruit League action in Jupiter, Florida. Adam Wainwright takes the mound for St. Louis. The Cards tied the Nationals in their preseason opener Sunday.

GRIZZLIES AT WASHINGTON TONIGHT
The Memphis Grizzlies are on the road tonight to face the Wizards in the nation’s capital. The Grizzlies are 15-and-15 and return home Thursday to host the Bucks. Washington is 13-and-19.

AREA HOCKEY REPORT
On the ice last night, St. Louis Blues held on to beat the Ducks 5-4 in Anaheim.The Nashville Predators will face Carolina tonight at Music City. Nashville beat Columbus Sunday and has won four of its last five. The Predators have yielded just four goals in those four victories.

NATIONAL SPORTS BRIEFS
Lloyd Pierce is out as head coach of the Atlanta Hawks. He was fired Monday, with assistant Nate McMillan taking over on an interim basis. The Hawks are 14-and-20 on the season, leaving them 11th in the East. Pierce was 63-and-120 since being hired in May 2018.

Pass-rusher J.J. Watt is heading to the desert. The five-time Pro Bowler has agreed to a two-year contract with the Cardinals. Multiple reports says it’s worth 31-million dollars, with 23-million guaranteed. Watt was released last month after 10 seasons with the Texans.

Michigan is now number-two in the men’s Top-25 Coaches’ Poll. The 18-and-1 Wolverines jumped ahead of previous number-two Baylor. The 18-and-1 Bears are now third. Gonzaga remains number-one at 24-and-0. Illinois is fourth. Alabama and West Virginia are tied for fifth.

Florida State is locking up men’s head basketball coach Leonard Hamilton. The two sides have agreed to a five-year contract extension through 2024-25. The 72-year-old Hamilton is in his 19th season with the Seminoles and is their all-time winningest coach.

The Mets plan to honor late Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver this season. They will wear a “41” patch on the right sleeve of their home and away jerseys. Seaver died in August at age 75. The three-time Cy Young winner is the Mets all-time leader in wins and ERA.
